Introducing timeless singer-songwriter Ian Janco with ‘Something New’

The latest in our new music discoveries is Ian Janco. He’s a singer-songwriter from rural Idaho but now based in London, and with a timeless sound that appeals to a wide audience thanks to its radio-ready sound and honest delivery.

In his brand new single ‘Something New’, he sings sensitively about lingering heartache, which he says is about “the feeling of knowing that a relationship is coming to an end, but still having love for a person even though they’ve moved on.” He does well to carry those emotions through with authenticity, partly down to his experienced songwriting, but also because the song was inspired by his own break-up in the first UK lockdown of 2022. He thinks back to that day when he wrote “Something New” describing it as

“…One of the darker days of that time, it just poured out of me – an expression of sadness and longing but also a kind of optimism for what’s to come.”

In alt-rock ‘Love Child’, Freya Beer cuts off a toxic female friendship

Female friendships have been at the core of much discussion over recent months. I think that the pandemic has made us all that much more introspective, I mean when you’re spending days in isolation, you tend to think about your life in a different way.

For London artist Freya Beer, it’s a toxic friendship that comes under scrutiny in her new single ‘Love Child’, which she wrote following the release of last year’s Beast LP and so probably during the uncertain middle phase in the UK.

As a result, this track is a commanding alt-rock number that takes inspiration from Hollywood’s gothic screen sirens and a more pop-friendly direction, although don’t get me wrong, it’s still well within the rock world. The single also comes with a video (directed by George Mills), in which Freya is confident and seductive – she performs ‘Love Child’ with a satisfying allure. This physical embodiment perfectly suits the mysterious metaphors and scathing similes that Freya weaves in between the symphonic bass structures and striking violins.

“My new single ‘Love Child’ is an important release as it touches upon the subject of “gaslighting”. The lyrics speak from the experience of coming across individuals in life who undermine and try to claim your knowledge and creativity by opposing themselves as the victim in the situation they’ve caused. The subject of the song is something which I haven’t touched upon in my songwriting before but being able to share it on a wider platform and become a story which people can relate to is a way of telling my story.” – Freya Beer

Jozem shares a touching ode to lessons learned in his ‘Youth’

Partnered with a stunning visual of immeasurable beauty, Canadian based Jozem reveals his newest offering in the form of ‘Youth’, a celebration of being different. Undulating with layers of neo-soul all wrapped up in alternative RnB, ‘Youth’ has a distinguished Lof-fi charm, captured by Jozems own production.

Beginning with a field recording from Jozems primary school back in Nairobi, alongside the single art, the video itself also features intimate ties to his hometown, having been filmed also in Nairobi, the dancers featured are from the local ballet school.

Jozems’ debut album ‘it came to me in a dream’ will be available 20th May 2022.

Youth is about walking in one’s own truth, a celebration of being different, of marching to the beat of your own drum in a world that oftentimes will not acknowledge or understand you. It is about struggling to, but ultimately finding one’s voice and choosing to use it whether it falls on deaf ears or not. It is in honour of all those kindred souls who helped mould us, some who we have unfortunately lost along the way.” – Jozem

Redhanded return with a huge debut album, the meteoric ‘Retrograde’

London four-piece Redhanded return to share their debut album, the ten-track alt-rock experience ‘Retrograde’. Having been playing together since 2015, this album has been painstakingly created, carefully crafted and sleekly sculpted into their unique sound and is finally ready to be shared.

As the saying goes, you can’t rush perfection and in this case, it’s most certainly true that good things come to those who wait and this album is a gift to the world of Rock N Roll and a homage to all those who have helped influence and inspire the band over the years. Confident now in their own special brand of energetic melodic metal, gritty alt-rock and dark punchy grunge Redhanded have truly delivered with this sensational project.

“Our debut album ‘Retrograde’ has been a labour of love and a personal journey for all of us. Our core sound was forged in the jam room, and refined overtime – at the end of the day, we wanted to create an album that was organic, honest and truly representative of all four of our personalities in every song. Above all, we wanted to create an album we could listen back to, be proud of, and genuinely enjoy.” – Redhanded

‘almost sex’ unveil a world of indie-folk magic with debut EP ‘We’re Okay’

Boston based, boy-girl duo ‘almost sex’ have revealed their intimate slice of indie-folk magic, the utterly delightful debut EP, ‘We’re Okay’. Gorgeously dreamy from start to finish, ‘We’re Okay’ is gently encased in featherlight folk, tinged with Indie and peppered with Americana.

Emanating a Lo-fi haze amidst the nostalgia fuelled vocals, ‘almost sex’ have a penchant for poetic, clever and storytelling lyrics which keep the listener hooked from the get-go. Partnered with heavenly harmonies and killer melodies and you’re onto an absolute winner of a recipe, one which ‘almost sex’ have nailed down.

“Our drummer had been away for work for most of the year, so we began performing shows with an analogue drum machine from 1979. We decided to take it into the studio with us and it ended up becoming the principal instrument featured on most of these tracks. Much of the lyrical content of the project centers around themes of getting older in an increasingly frightening and hyper-commodified world.”  – almost sex

Tremayne makes an explosive solo return with ‘Total Fucking Darkness’

One of four members of the Canadian hip hop collective STAYOUTLATE Tremayne has been busy working, recording and releasing as part of this group project. Now after 3 years, he’s ready to start sharing more of his solo singles, starting with the fully charged ‘Total Fucking Darkness’.

True to his nature, ‘TFD’ is oozing with Tremayne’s incomparable energy, confidence and fiery attitude which radiates with every passing second of this new offering. With a creative flair, ‘TFD’ questions the parameters of style, fashion and money and how these can be an extension of ourselves or a representation of our personalities.

Pulsating with alternative hip hop, rap and trap, ‘TFD’ is an exciting return for Tremayne and we look forward to seeing what else he has in store for 2022.

“This is my attempt to discuss the difference between fashion and style without coming off as a pretentious prick. I love fashion deeply. I love fashion almost as much as I love music. I can watch runway shows for hours, I can shop for days and if I had a choice folks like Raf Simons, Demna Gvasalia, Chitose Abe, and this kid from Toronto named Aris would be my best friends. Let me say this again, I love fashion. But what is fashion without style?”  Tremayne

Charlie Noiir reveals new single ‘Beside Me’ his most vulnerable offering yet

Another member of Toronto based hip-hop collective STAYOUTLATE graces our pages today, in the form of Charlie Noiir’s new solo alt R&B single ‘Beside Me’. His most raw and vulnerable offering to date, ‘Beside Me’ is unlike an ordinary love song. Infused with emotion and desire, it’s a passion inducing war cry for love, detailing the tumultuous ups and downs of a romantic relationship.

Noiir’s capable vocal shines through delivering a captivating chorus, one you simply can’t help but sing along to. With an almost confessional tone, this single really allows fans to see another side to the talented artist, allowing them to connect on an even deeper level. ‘Beside Me’ shows Noiirs incredible versatility and authenticity yet again and with his upcoming album On My Sleeve tipped for release later this year, something tells me there is plenty more to look forward to.

“Beside me touches on emotions felt in the heat of a turbulent relationship.” Charlie Noiir

Calista Kazuko releases ‘Panda’ from her upcoming Uchi project

‘Panda’ is part of Calista Kazuko’s upcoming project titled Uchi, inspired by the sense of home, which will consist of songs written and recorded during and after Calista Kazuko’s recent pregnancy. Of all the tracks, ‘Panda’ is the one that is closest in relation to that major live event, as you’ll see in the light-hearted music video for the track. It features the musician in pregnancy, her actual mum and the surprise guest that is her new child. The playful visuals complement and contrast Kazuko’s unconventional sound, which uses patterned, war-mongering drums and a classic pop piano to convey the strength of the bear-like women in her own family. The track is full of lots of alternative production gems, like the phased out breakdown and breathy background vocals, which keeps the listener on their toes throughout.

“‘Panda’ is a celebration of Motherhood.  A thank you to my own fabulous Mama and a thank you to the magical little Bean growing in my tummy. It’s true what they say… becoming a Mother really does make you feel invincible, it’s the greatest gift I could have ever asked for!”

The Music Review Mixtape is a new format for the Right Chord Music Blog. In this feature, writer Daisy Lipsey provides a round-up of the best new music submitted via our website. Today she introduces 8 new artists, with a short, snackable music review.

Highs and lows flow through ELENA’s soulful R&B Enough Love EP

ELENA is a new name on the UK pop-R&B scene. She’s got a background steeped in musical theatre, but in 2021 she decided to switch things up by stepping into InScape Studios for her first songwriting sessions. The product of that is her Enough Love LP, the debut work from the young 21-year-old artist, which is full of musings on life in lockdown, young love, creative ambition and also the pain of grief.

It’s all wrapped up in a flawless R&B meets pop aura, which really shows off ELENA’s impressive vocals. Tracks like “What Goes Up” in particular exude that mid-00s R&B flow, with joyful melodies, but then lifted further up with a contemporary trap beat to make sure the listener knows that ELENA is definitely a modern competitor.

Also of note on the EP is the touching single “Whole Again”, a soulful ballad all about dealing with the unexpected twists and turns of life, which for the young singer-songwriter was the loss of her grandparents. It’s a real tear-jerking moment on the EP contrasting to the more hopeful moments like “Dreaming” and confident statements like “Man Enough”.

“I never wanted this EP to be sad, I wanted to share my life and not only the pandemic to express different events and episodes which I have had live through putting myself in control. The song represents what I felt and wished I had said, if I had been strong enough at the time. Writing these words onto a page has been life therapy I never knew I needed.”

Dream team Latir, Olivia Nelson and Tokio Myers deliver ethereal “Carousel”

“Carousel” from London singer, songwriter and producer Latir is probably one of the dreamiest tracks we’ve heard all year.

It starts with cushioned piano (performed by Tokio Myers) and lilting piano, which makes way for Latir’s dulcet tones. It’s dripping with romanticism, in that way old black and white Hollywood movies are, although with the artist’s specific take on future soul. The whole track takes its time drifting through the ethereal soundscape, even when we get to Olivia Nelson’s bolder vocals, the tempo stays as chilled as ever. This musical mirage drifts out as easily as it comes in, leaving a lasting loved-up imprint.

“For those feeling helplessly in love, for those who have felt this feeling, and for those who are yet to fall… I hope this song aids your eventual, transcendental moments, as though you are on a Carousel, to nowhere and everywhere all at the same time.”

common goldfish brings the 90s back with fuzzed-out psychedelic rock single “Feel The Fuzz”

Stone Roses, Primal Scream and Tame Impala are just some of the names that define the height of 90s indie-rock and so it’s fitting that modern-day music maker common goldfish has called on these great names to influence his own nostalgic sound.

He hails from Tottenham and is embedded in the skater and busking scene there, which he brought together for an open-air performance at the local Markfield Skatepark for a close group of friends and acquaintances. His debut single “Feel The Fuzz” is made up of breakbeats and basslines, it’s a funky celebration of a dreamer’s optimism, matching up with common goldfish’s own theory that it’s all in the fuzz. We recommend dropping all other activities and focussing on the old school sounds and vibrant haze to maximise the feel-good feeling.

“The track embodies the sense of dreamer’s optimism (“the fuzz”) and the feeling that led me to change career paths and pursue my passion in music. We only lead one life, Feel the Fuzz is about helping people see that they should value their experiences over materials and not always seek the easy options in life.”

Kosmo is the limitless alt-pop adventure from virtual idol Maie

From China to the world, Maie is the virtual artist making her mark on the global pop scene. Her sophomore single “Kosmo” is another ambitious pop affair that takes Maie’s search for identity and belonging and transforms it into an action-packed adventure, filled with incendiary beat drops and unforgettable pop hooks, accentuated by producer Pete Nappi.

The story at the heart of “Kosmo” reflects that of today’s coming-of-age generation, except like everything that exists online, it’s exaggerated into unimaginable forms and possibilities. The music video is also another feat of hyper-realist animation which pieces together retro-futuristic 2D illustration with more abstract scenes and expansive landscapes. “Kosmo” is further proof that the limit is endless for Maie.

“I can travel to places normal people can’t. Visit worlds most people can only dream of. But I choose to be here. I choose to be with my friends. I choose to discover what it means to be human. I’d do anything to be here, where I want to belong.”

Mystic Jem reveals beautifully cryptic sophomore single ‘Lost’

Singer, songwriter and musician Jem reveals his stunning sophomore single ‘Lost’. Dripping in middle eastern, mystical melodies and partnered with a cinematic video directed by his brother Necip Karakas.

‘Lost’ follows his equally as beautiful debut single ‘Secrets’, which also boasted a mesmerising music video. It’s clear to see that Jem is not here just to make music, with each release we see him bring entire worlds to life. Each one is a vivid masterpiece, a story unfolding with incredible storytelling prowess. Jem lives and breathes his art and with another piece of the puzzle carefully revealed, we cannot wait to see what he has in store as he prepares to deliver his debut EP ‘Don’t Let Me Disappear’ which is slated for release this spring.

“I always felt I was different. I didn’t fit anywhere. And to be fair, I never bothered to be a perfect fit for anyone or anything. Over the course, music happened to be a lens for me to share my alienation.” – JEM

Redhanded reveal their third single, the dark and hypnotic ‘Bottom’.

London based, four-piece alt-rock band Redhanded have shared their third single ‘Bottom’ and it’s not for the faint-hearted. Tinged with 90s rock and oozing with dark, gritty guitars and growling vocals, Redhanded have harnessed the sound of an era with this newest offering.

Accompanied by a black and white visual, (see top of page) ‘Bottom’ see’s Redhanded play their heaviest yet, exploding with energy from the get-go, ‘Bottom’ is the perfect precursor to gear fans up for their highly anticipated debut album ‘Retrograde’ which will be released at the end of April.

“This song is about how the things we don’t do or say come back to haunt us. Our heaviest single yet, it packs a punch but is full of melody.” – Redhanded

Riotous Ugly Mothers return with historically inspired ‘Armistice’

Garage rock, spaghetti western band Ugly Mothers have returned with their third instalment, the historically inspired ‘Armistice’. Partnered with a collage style visual featuring archive footage from the second world war, Ugly Mothers showcase their utter penchant for writing storytelling lyrics like no other.

Heavily influenced by the likes of Ennio Morricone and Quentin Tarantino, they write cinematic, stylistic songs that fit perfectly for film or TV. With their debut EP ‘Garden of Eden’ on the horizon, we can expect more mammoth fuzz, twanging guitar and their signature sour and cynical lyrics.

“Stumbling straight out of sticky Leytonstone and Walthamstow pubs, fuelled by battered sausages from greasy chip-shops, Ugly Mothers juggle bar-work, and superiority complexes, while using their dirty guitar music as an escape from a boring and unsuccessful life, riddled with financial insecurity, limited career opportunities and disappointing relationships.”

Joe Hicks returns with energetic and empowering new single ‘Mirror Mirror’

Singer, songwriter Joe Hicks has returned with infectious new single ‘Mirror Mirror’. Powerful, energetic guitar chords kickstart the release as Joe takes you on a ride with his introspective yet catchy lyrical hooks.

Reaching new heights, Joe’s versatile vocal is impressive as he sits comfortably belting out the chorus at the top of his range. Punchy drums perforate the track and keep your toe tapping whilst driving ‘Mirror Mirror’ forward. His first track of 2022 and since his debut album in 2020, this makes for a gorgeous return from the talented artist and we can’t wait to see what lies ahead.

“Lyrically it’s about reassurance. It’s about when you’re feeling beaten down by the world, acknowledging your fears and giving yourself a damn good talking to in the mirror. Figuring it all out.”

Johnny Kulo’s cements his reputation as a purveyor of soulful R&B gold with ‘Poseidon’

Berlin’s Johnny Kulo has been busy over the last few months, turning out a series of soul, jazz, indie and R&B inspired tracks that showcase his honeyed vocals and songwriting skills. You can catch up with the Indian troubadour by checking out last year’s Desire EP, which will put you in good stead for diving into his newest track ‘Poseidon’.

This one takes us down the freshest route yet, with less emphasis on a full band sound and more on the smooth and hazy production of consistent collaborator August Ingram. He’s also pulled in Big Vik on bass, who gives that essential groove to this R&B classic-in-the-making. Per Johnny Kulo’s usual brand, ‘Poseidon’ is all about that arrogant misbehaviour and the learning that he’s gleaned from it, but he leaves it vague enough for listeners to reflect on their own missteps.

“I decided to leave enough space in the mix for me to say what needs to be said in the verses. The drums and the keys came easy but I just knew I had to have Big Vik on the bass to complete the track. No track of mine is complete without August Ingram’s production and sonic design.”

Promising dancehall-pop newcomer Alana Sukul drops ‘Good To You’

West London’s Alana Sukul has been gradually introducing listeners to her dancehall, R&B and pop-influenced tracks that provide an insight into the 20-year-old’s emotional inner world. Building on past tracks ‘Be Friend’ and ‘Closer’, the young artist has stayed within her multi-genre style for newest work ‘Good To You’. It’s a very beat forward affair, with those familiar danceable beats and melodic toplines, although we have to say that Alana’s voice is sounding better than ever here.

We learned from her Instagram that she’s an untrained singer, yet still, she really pushes her range and the result is glorious with the higher register “woos” and “yeahs”. You might be surprised that this emotive song isn’t about love, instead, Alana shares her thoughts and feelings about the pressure that young people are under right now. With an accessible R&B-tinged funk-pop sound, Alana Sukul has framed this in a way we can all relate to.

“Sometimes as young adults, we try to live up to certain standards and pressure, this is just a reminder to live your life the way you want to.”

‘Only With Time’ is the patient R&B ballad from Adria Kain’s new album, When Flowers Bloom

Canadian rising star Adria Kain has concluded years of hard work and diligence this month with the release of her new album, When Flowers Bloom. Not only does it feature a rework of her 2015 single ‘Ocean’, but it’s peppered with sweet atonements of self-love, celebration, nostalgia and hope framed in Kain’s stunning soulful vocal and well-crafted contemporary R&B melodies.

A standout on the record is the focus track ‘Only With Time’, which typifies the ethos of this artist’s journey towards self-acceptance. She takes it right back to the good old days of sympathetic backing tracks, slowed-up tempos and vocal athleticism to convey the sincere emotions. If this one doesn’t make you swoon, then we’re pretty sure nothing else will.

Adding some more context to the album as a whole, Adria Kain shares a synopsis of this 11-track record:

“When Flowers Bloom tells the story of falling in love after overcoming the loss of oneself through previous experiences in love. It depicts the struggle of a young, masculine-presenting woman, who after embarking on a journey of self-discovery, attempts to heal her wounds that developed through romantic relationships and the false perceptions that were taught throughout her upbringing.”

Edwin Rosen returns with the dark and brooding ‘Vertigo’

After a whirlwind 2021, German electronic artist and producer Edwin Rosen has returned with his newest single and 2022 debut, the dark, brooding and utterly mesmerising ‘Vertigo’. Oozing with his signature electronics, sophisticated synth work and layered drum patterns, this offering continues the narrative that Edwin is ready to take 2022 by storm.

Having sold out his first two tours, the first of which in no less than 20 minutes, he has generated a cult following in the underground music scene and youth culture of Germany. Having now released a total of 18 dates across Austria, Germany and Switzerland promoting his previous EP, the ‘mitleerenhänden’ tour, is now also completely sold out. With such a solid track record, it’s clear that we’ll be seeing a lot more from this exciting and talented new artist.

“Vertigo is a song about the feeling when everything seems to be spiralling out of control when it’s hard to tell if time is moving fast or slow and how one person can be the thing that makes all of it stop. It’s a song about holding on to exactly that.”

Heidrunna shows her sweet side in gorgeously slow-moving ‘Daydreamer’

Iceland native Heidrunna has released her dreamy, new, disco-esque single the aptly named ‘Daydreamer’. Taken from her upcoming debut album ‘Melodramatic’ slated for release on April 21, this newest electro drenched slice is gently yet gorgeously groovy.

The Nordic electro-pop star gets sentimental in this slow-moving, sway-inducing number through her lyricism as she sweetly journeys down memory lane.

Dusted with light 80’s style synths, ‘Daydreamer’ feels sweet and airy, veering away slightly from her usual palpable blend of euphoric eclecticism, she swaps her recognisable hyper-pop for a heavenly and highly welcomed detour.

“Daydreamer is one of my favourite songs that I’ve written so far. It came about as I was walking home on a crisp sunny day, I started humming this melody with the lyric ‘daydreamer’ and it made me feel incredible. So good that when I came home I went straight to the piano and started to play it… it felt so special and natural.”

An emotive and evocative blend of alt RnB and Future Soul, Jozem has returned with his explorative new single ‘Goderich’.

Toronto based Jozem tackles the constant pressures artists face to keep creating with gorgeous new alt R&B cut ‘Goderich’. Bringing fans into his world from the get-go, he questions from his own personal experience, what happens, when that ever-illusive creative flare completely fizzles out.

Dissecting this issue head-on within his writing, ‘Goderich’ is the result of a beautiful exploration through the ebbs and flows of creativity. As Jozem comes to the profound conclusion that in order to grasp the creative threads once more he must in fact be able to let them go. He must be able to accept that, just like in nature, we go through seasons and changes and just like the trees do not cling onto their leaves, we too must let them go and be laid bare for a time, ready for new leaves, new growth and new life to be able to come through.

Oozing with gorgeous Lo-fi, hazy and sparse production, ‘Goderich’ is a gentle gem just waiting to be discovered.

“Goderich is a song about letting go, a song about falling in and out of love with my creative process and realizing that it is in these ‘in between’ moments of quiet that you will again find the love and inspiration.”

Curse of Lono latest album, People In Cars, is a raw yet honest reflection on life’s highs and lows.

Curse of Lono People In Cars

Experiencing a year no one could imagine with the deaths of his father, uncle and ex-partner, Curse of Lono’s Felix Bechtolsheimer found comfort in his music.

His sonic shrine titled People In Cars swirls between the tones of The National and The War On Drugs, all while staying true to the musician’s identity within this already acclaimed album.

Throughout the record, the musician explores the themes of grief, loss, uncertainty, and new beginnings. The name of the album was inspired by Mike Mandel’s photo book, which captured people through the windows of cars at a Los Angeles intersection in the 1970s.

Bechtolsheimer goes from the opening sombre of ‘Let Your Love Rain Down On Me’ to the string-stroke piano lament of ‘Man Down’. As he forms his own collection of snapshots to create the intimate atmosphere of the album, the artist slowly finds closure and nostalgia in these recent tragic events.

Speaking of the album and signing it off, Bechtolsheimer noted:

“Right now I can do what I fucking like. I got a record that’s my favourite record I’ve ever made by a long way, and it’s the record I needed to make. I lost my dad, my uncle and my ex-partner last year, and my band, but I’ve got this record, and I almost look at it like a bit of a shrine.”

Though offering a dark route of redemption, Curse of Lono organically closes off 2021.

A potential frontrunner for AI music, Maie’s debut release ‘Like You’ explores the relationship between her digital self and the physical reality through the sounds of dynamic electro-pop.

Maie – Like You

For fans of FKA twigs and BANKS, Maie debut is a fresh breath to the world we live in. Through oscillating synths and blissful bass, ‘Like You’ takes a turn on the ups and downs of identity, love and living through a world under our feet.

Released through Avastar, a Melbourne-based record label transforming music through their roster of non-human artists. Alongside these ground-breaking sounds and productions, Maie is brought to life through a warm, effective music video that sees her exploring the surroundings and embracing her human form.

Speaking about the experience, Maie explained: “I’m still learning how to be here, how to be human and how to create. I don’t think I’m very different to the other singers in the world, but I know I’m not the same. But that’s a good thing.

The Music Review Mixtape is a new format for the Right Chord Music Blog. In this feature, writer Daisy Lipsey provides a round-up of the best new music submitted via our submissions website. Today she introduces 7 new artists, with a short, snackable music review.

T.E. Yates – Strange Weather

T.E. Yates reveals stunning EP ‘Strange Weather’

Closely following his debut album ‘Silver Coins and White Feathers’, Bristol-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist T.E. Yates has now revealed his brand new EP, the stunning ‘Strange Weather’.

Bursting at the seams with the pure delight of Americana, Folk, 60’s/70’s, Rock and even some Jazz and Ragtime thrown in, ‘Strange Weather’ makes for a remarkable and eclectic listen.  With authentic honesty and sophisticated songwriting throughout, this project is another gem to add to the ever-growing collection from T.E.Yates.

Chibundu Onuzo – Mama

‘Mama’ is the second release from singer, songwriter & pianist Chibundu Onuzo.

Raised in Nigeria’s capital city of Lagos, Chibundu Onuzo arrived in the UK in 2005 with a passion for storytelling and over these past years, she’s had several successful books published and has won the Betty Trask Award and was shortlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize and the Commonwealth Book Prize. That love of sharing narratives also extends into music. Chibundu explains:

Music has always been this part of me that I can never shake. It’s the bass line running through my life.”

Following on from her debut single “Good Soil”, the singer, songwriter and pianist has released her second single “Mama”. Both tracks share a contemporary pop meets cinematic soul feel, although “Mama” is notably more sensitive and for good reason. It’s all about the fragility of the earth that we call home and about how it’s humanity’s responsibility to take care of it, a sentiment you’ll hear in lyrics like, “Mama, you brought us to this life, but didn’t teach us right”, emphasising the importance to educate yourself on global issues, on the environment and on matters that impact the future of our very existence. It’s an incredibly powerful and beautiful song.

SAPPHIRE – ‘call u mine’

SAPPHIRE’s ‘call u mine’ blew my expectations out of the water

I loved SAPPHIRE’s last single ‘Repeat’, it was a totally unexpected mix of British pop and Daft Punk-esque experimentation, and I really did expect the new single ‘call u mine’ to follow suit. That being said, I’ve been pleasantly surprised. More than that, she blew my expectations out of the water with the honest display of emotions in this straight-foward piano pop track. I mean, when you’ve got a voice as stellar as SAPPHIRE’s, why wouldn’t you put that front and center? From the off, it’s the simmering standout of the whole track, with a tasteful piano and violins creating a cinematic atmosphere.

“I really wanted this song to mimic the feeling of falling in love – that warm fuzzy feeling that we’ve all experienced in some way. But even though the production mirrors that feeling, the lyrics explain how it’s not always happily ever after.”

JEM – Secrets

London based newcomer makes otherworldly debut with single and music video ‘Secrets’.

Born and raised in the heart of Cesme, Turkey the emerging singer-songwriter pieces the wonders of the two worlds he has lived in together and addictively bridges the sounds of Middle Eastern roots with the modern sounds of the capital city, which he now calls homes.

Intrigued by the unseen and hidden gems of life, Jem embeds his emotions into his debut single, ‘Secrets’. He combines the warm, cinematic production with a heady blend of desert-dry percussion and gritty rock-infused guitar.

Speaking about his debut, Jem said:

“I’ve always been interested in the unknown, and the feeling lies between the lines. Music and art are my way of highlighting the beauty that I see, which is often buried with a plain sight for most people.”

Celine Love – Like You Like That

Listen to the introspective R&B track ‘Like You Like That’ from talented singer and songwriter Celine Love.

When I first clicked play on Celine Love’s new single ‘Like You Like That’, I was gently ushered into the chilled atmosphere with tranquil synths. Soon came Celine’s warm and inviting voice, floating over a sea of cooler-than-cool production and proto-R&B beats courtesy of producer TR33.

The story, as I understand it, is one of an introspective thinker, “in my mind I’m anywhere but with you”, frankly sings Celine. Her need to pull away comes to the greater realisation that she doesn’t like this person as anything more than an acquaintance and so she drifts out the same smooth synth door she came in through.

“Like You Like That is about the fear of losing myself in the idea of a perfect romance. After a long term relationship that ended during lockdown, I was just starting to feel comfortable in my skin because I had the time to focus on myself. I am a chronic overthinker and wrote this song almost as a warning to not give up everything I had gained for anyone else.”

Lonely Boy – LONELY PPL

Canada’s latest RnB artist Lonely Boy continues to enjoy the rays of ones to watch with the first release of his three-part project LONELY PPL

Beginning with Volume 1 that features only a small yet effective three-track piece, Lonely Boy shares a mix of emotions that embark on an intimate journey of romance, healing and self-love. From the classic RnB golden era of ‘October’, the pensive song ‘Only One Night’ to the closure of the buoyant joy of ‘Sussex Drive’, his first project is the perfect start to what the future holds.

Speaking overall of what the project is all about, the rising artist shares:

“Everyone gets their heart broken sometimes, LONELY PPL is my personal journey filled with trials and tribulations and the authentic, vulnerable human experience that comes with heartbreak, healing and moving on. I’m very proud to share this personal gift from me to you, and I hope you love it just as much as I loved creating it.”

Offering the combination of unique, sultry RnB with the sounds of soul-pop influences that are too hard to ignore, Ottawa, Canada based LONELY BOY overall infects his listeners with artistry that leaves gaps for growth yet is promising for high achievements.

After his debut EP, February That Cried Red, Lonely Boy continues to surprise us with his latest adventure, and 2022 is going to be no different.

Aussie-British band Greatest Hits drop third EP – ‘Volume 2’

Perching perfectly, somewhere in the muso-universe between Sunshine Pop, 70’s groove, and Neo-Psych is Aussie-British band Greatest Hits who have returned with their next EP ‘Volume 2’. Showcasing yet again, their unique ability to melt multiple genres and influences, all whilst exploring encapsulating elements of indie-pop, soul, funk, psych-rock and much, much more.

Purveyor of dark, introspective and otherworldly sounds, Nora Lilith has recently released her debut EP ‘Daysof8’. Overflowing with curiosity and intrigue, Nora’s first Ep project is utterly spellbinding and represents an ongoing inner journey of self-exploration and discovery for the artist.

We caught up with Nora Lilith to unpick and unravel her artistic journey so far, the creative process behind the ‘Daysof8’ EP and what comes next for this exciting, genre-defying artist.

Hi Nora Lilith, welcome to Right Chord Music. Thank you for joining us today, we really appreciate your time.

Thank you for having me!

To give our readers a heads up, please give us a brief introduction of you and your music.

I’m an autodidactic singer/songwriter/producer working with DIY sounds somewhere along the lines of lo-fi experimental bedroom pop, with an interest for trip-hop, jazz, house, and generally unconventional sounds.

You’ve recently revealed your debut EP ‘Daysof8’, what was this process like for you? The highs, the lows?

It’s been quite a learning curve, especially in the ways it illuminated things about my relationship to my music, and to releasing. Initially, I gave myself about a month or two to write most of the tracks. It was exhilarating to find a process that would condense my creative work like that. But was also a dissociative experience in some ways as I’ve generally, since then, been growing in awareness of how I’ve never truly learned how to be in rhythm with myself creatively.

That my anchor into music sort of got lost at sea, and I’d been instead outsourcing my creative drive and intentions. So I think at different stages of the creative process as well as during the release itself I was plagued with anxiety and self-criticism. In a weird way though, I think these lows made way for some of the highs, as all growth comes from discomfort.

I’ve also never had a publicist or worked with a label before so that was definitely an exciting change; it felt great to have support and not feel like I carried the weight of a project all alone.

What would you say your favourite track is on the EP?

Hmm, I’d say either Daysof8 or Yolk probably. I still feel tethered to my juvenile excitement that came from using Alterboy for the first time, so these tracks felt vocally expressive to me in a different way; in their tonality.

What’s the most rewarding part of making music for you?

The moments I’m singing and able to tap into the deepest parts of myself through tonal and lyrical expression. I feel transported, blissful, a sort of out-of-body experience where I instead wholly embody the sounds that wrap around me.

What would you say you love most about being a music maker?

I think expanding on that last response, I love the opportunity music gives me to connect with and develop a deep sense of intimacy with my soul. It sort of feels like a bridge between two worlds, an access point where I can meet with myself away from the rest of the world.

You used to be a part of electronic duo NÄM, how would you say this differs from your current project?

NÄM had a very different sound, it was more overtly pop I’d say. I also wasn’t producing in NÄM, I actually didn’t know how yet, so this solo project is very special to me as it gives me the opportunity for more creative control. My voice was also so different back then! Haha, it always blows my mind a little when I listen back to those older tracks, and how much my voice has evolved in that time.

What did you learn from your time as one half of NÄM?

For one, coming out of the project I learned that I am capable of pursuing my creative vision on my own, which is something I had doubted during. Throughout NÄM I definitely learned a lot of technicalities about the music world, performing, and the industry. I was also introduced to Ableton which is the software I now use to produce.

Any plans for any live shows/tours in the not too distant future?

Honestly, no! I haven’t made any live show plans, I don’t even have a live set figured out right now. It’ll come though, at some point haha.

What’s next for Nora Lilith?

I’m planning on moving back to Berlin come summer 2022. I’m curious to see how that re/directs my music journey. My priority right now creatively is giving myself the time and patience to build a healthier relationship with my music, tapping back into my authentic expression. What may or may not come of that in terms of releases I just don’t know yet! I do have tracks for days though so you’ll be seeing more eventually 🙂

Toronto’s afro-dancehall newcomer Lexxicon shares the wonders of love with the helping hand of RnB riser Desiire within his latest single, ‘Back to You’.

Lexxicon – Back to You

From London to Leamington and from Africa to the Caribbean to finally settling in Toronto, Canada, Lexxicon cites inspirations of Stefflon Don and Wizkid with the influence of culture and heritage that creates an artist delved into a multitude of sounds and one specific journey.

Prepared for the release of his upcoming third studio album, Tropicon Island, ‘Back to You’ is the second instalment of his future chapter that offers a tale of the ups and downs of new love. Doused in aspects of infectious afro-pop with hooking R&B, the genre-bending sound is dynamic yet weaves between the enhancing lyrics to overall give listeners an experience found nowhere else.

Speaking of the story of the track, Lexxicon noted:

“This song is for those who have that connection they can’t give up, for those who are still working out the kinks in a new relationship. A reminder the relationship doesn’t have to be toxic if you’re growing and not making the same mistakes.”

Balancing between the cities of Atlanta and Paris, Desmond Myers continues to surprise with the delicately crafted debut album Shadowdancer.

Desmond Myers – Shadowdancer

Influenced highly by his time in the city of love and his history with the European country, Myers, with the helping hands of French musicians Mathieu Gramoli, Louis Marin Renaud and many more, capture the esque of French undertones yet twist and turn through complex, modern production. Entirely self-written and developed throughout, Shadowdancer touches on a multitude of personal themes that Myers shares throughout the journey of eight chosen tracks.

From the battle with temptation within hit single ‘Playing with Fire‘ to the honest evaluation of masculinity in ‘Real Man‘ and the finishing touches of self-discovery throughout the lead single ‘Shadows‘, Myers voyage is an opening to a young man finding his feet within the chaos of our society.

Speaking about the finale chapter of ‘Shadows’, Myers said:

“’Shadows’ is a song I wrote after being frustrated with overthinking. I can be a very cerebral person at times and, I wanted to make a song that got me out of my own head. I had been making a lot of mid-tempo music about things that were very personal to me, and I just wanted to make something to shake those feelings off. It ended up being just as vulnerable of an experience as those other songs.”

With an overall cohesive project but giving glimpses of every thought Myers hold within each different track, Shadowdancer is rich in sounds and textures yet entail a journey of an artist that knows his place.

Netherland’s newcomer Camille Antoni re-emerges from Bungalow with his debut solo single ‘L.U.N.A.’.

Camille Antoni – L.U.N.A

Known for his work in the indie-pop duo Bungalow, Antoni finally routes down the solo career as he prepares to re-introduce himself to his fans on his own terms. Whilst discovering his love for music at a young age, Antoni has spent most of his adult life sharing his knowledge with others but is now ready to do it for himself.

Bringing a board of influence to the table, from Iggy Pop and The Sex Pistols to sounds of Tame Impala and producer Mura Masa, Antoni presents a record disjointed by uneasy hip-hop alongside dark, refreshing undertones to represent a story of frustration with humanity. Featuring vocals from long-time friend and collaborator Pete Philly, ‘L.U.N.A.’ overall sets the tone for what’s to come from Camille Antoni.

Speaking on his debut work, Camille Antoni explained:

“Within my compositions, I like to play with dissonance. It evokes a feeling that there’s a tension within the music that rubs and needs to be resolved. When writing with a singer/rapper, I also strive for the lyrical subject of the song to match the feelings and emotions within the composition.
My first single, ‘L.U.N.A.’ in collaboration with Pete Philly, is a good example of this. ‘Lead Us Not Astray’ is a religious quote asking for greater power to guide us on the right path. At this exact moment in time, we are not only in a climate crisis but also in the aftermath of Covid-19. Financial inequality continues to grow, and governments all over the world are each struggling with their own issues. ‘L.U.N.A.’ is about having the knowledge and bravery to make the difficult but correct choices in order to make things better.”
