Rebekka Louise returns with the dark-synth ode ‘There’s Something In The Shadows’.

Rebekka Louise – There’s Something In The Shadows

With her debut album release fast approaching, the track is the final single before its release. Blending a silky pop feel with throbbing bass synthesis and brooding ambience.

Starting with the gentle roar of the moody synthesizers, the single cuts through the soundwave with its pulsating kick drum. Rhythm and melody are at the heart of this release, complete with Louise’s euphoric lyrical delivery and its slick pop underbelly.

There’s a beautiful sense of foreboding that this track is forged upon due to Rebekka’s unique approach to production. The different ‘feels’ the track embodies are especially creatively refreshing to hear; ‘Shadows’ starts from humble beginnings before expanding into something that feels as empowering as it is exciting. Rebekka covers a lot of sonic ground before the tension rises into what can only be described as ‘gothic-house,’ punctuated only by dramatic pauses where the titular lyric is suspensefully spoken, reminiscent of artists like Björk and The Sisters of Mercy.

Clocking in at just under three minutes and thirty seconds, ‘There’s Something In The Shadows’ explores life’s anxieties – feeling alienated from the world, but accepting the madness in which you can find yourself. The experimental nature of the production brings out the beauty in the songwriting, keeping the record both dramatically encapsulating and commercially rhythmic simultaneously.

Raised in Norway as a classically trained cellist, Louise’s background was initially forged in Musical Theatre before becoming a producer and an artist in her own right. It’s rare to find an artist who’s as multi-talented as they are driven to be the best they can be – perhaps this is what makes ‘There’s Something In The Shadows’ as creatively rich and compelling.

‘There’s Something In The Shadows’ is a journey through the anxieties and obscurities of existence, complete with dramatic synthesis and a compelling production style. Rebekka Louise will be sure to make heads turn.

Singaporean rising artist JESSMO has unveiled her latest single, Saltwater, a captivating melody that delves into the mysterious emotions of love.

JESSMO – Salt Water

Hailing from Singapore, JESSMO is a talented singer-songwriter and music producer known for creating uplifting and evocative melodies within the pop and electronic genres. Her music, characterized by deeply emotional and dark vocals, is as enchanting as it is compelling.

With a wealth of experience, JESSMO has been classically trained in piano since she was five and started writing her first songs during her teenage years. At 17, she left college and began her artistic journey, travelling and performing in cities across Europe, including London, Amsterdam, Paris, Galway, Copenhagen, Düsseldorf, and her homeland, Singapore.

Using a metaphor, JESSMO’s newest single Saltwater portrays the ocean’s mysterious nature as an allegory for love. Just like the sea’s vastness and depth, love can be terrifying at first. However, JESSMO believes this fear is what makes it real and worth it. Sometimes, you just have to leave insecurities behind and take that leap of faith into the unknown.

Saltwater begins with a cool piano intro and quickly transitions into a vibrant disco-pop track. Driven by a playful bassline and JESSMO’s gifted vocals, the song leads listeners into an irresistible melody perfect for losing yourself on the dance floor.

“Saltwater is a catchy pop tune, brimming with emotion and driven by a passionate performance.”

From its inherent catchiness to infectious production, “Saltwater” exemplifies JESSMO’s deep connection to music. As she likes to say:

My world is built on music, and music bridges me to a world of infinite possibilities”.

By infusing her latest release with these sentiments, JESSMO continues to establish herself as a rising act in the indie music scene.

UK quintet Mercury Machine returns with their first release of 2023. ‘Second Life’ channels the gloomy atmospheric vibe of dark electro synth through an intricate and meticulous production.

Mercury Machine – Second Life

Comprised of Lee Maguire (vocals/guitar/composer), Carl Street (bass/vocals), Tim Burge (lead guitar), Kade Daniels (keyboards), and Gav Foley (drums), Mercury Machine has become a constant presence in the UK’s indie scene, since their debut release in 2018, the band have conquered hearts and minds with their well-crafted melodies.

With a robust collection of singles on their record, including a cover of the emblematic post-punk anthem Swamp Thing by The Chameleons and also a warmly received self-titled LP, this outfit has developed a devoted following not only in the UK but all over Europe.

Even though the original version of this track was released in May 2022, this new version of Second Life is a remix made in collaboration with the renowned producer Joe Cross of The Courteeners. Talking in more detail about the significance of this piece, the band explain:

Is about the unfairness of being born into a bad situation whatever that may be, but then trying with every ounce of your soul to escape with the help of technology”.

The track opens with a thick wall of mesmerizing synths, leading to Maguire’s captivating vocal work, which is intense as it gets due to his deep and almost sinister delivery. Additionally, the dynamic instrumentation of this piece evokes a futuristic vibe that fully immerses you in this dreamlike soundscape.

“Second Life is a cutting-edge composition with charming production and flawless performance.”

With this level of quality in their music, this group has proved they still have so much to give, and with the promise of more live shows coming soon, nothing will stop Mercury Machine from increasing their fanbase even more.

Lyra’s new single Lost is an electro lounge cut that describes internal struggle and doubt.

Lyra – Lost

First single in a row of releases due this year, the song is a delightfully classy electro-lounge number, each chord sliding like a warm summer breeze embracing your whole body. Lead vocalist Jenna’s voice slides on the notes like a gull on the wind. Dripping with passion, she sounds strong and resolute, but smooth and soothing at the same time. Her belts resound, then dissolve as an echo, slowly vanishing into the background music. Around her voice, piano keys tap like strokes of a paintbrush on a watercolour canvas.

And yet, once you get past the sultry calming soundscape, a more attentive listen unveils quite a sombre picture, since the story being told is anything but light-hearted. The path our songstress is sliding along is actually an intricate maze inside her own mind. One composed of hard choices and emotional doubt. This is actually well symbolised on the single cover, which shows two doors, imposingly standing before the viewer. “One sets me free the other sends me to my grave”, reflects Jenna.

The band wrote the song about the struggles of trying to make ends meet as independent musicians. Now one is left to wonder which path they see as their demise and which equals freedom since the choices normally posed before someone in their position normally are:  either compromising their vision to make money or staying true to themselves at the risk of having to find some other way of putting bread on the table. “When I look up at the stars/Will they remember my name?”, she wonders in the chorus, echoing the hopes and fears of so many young artists trying to etch their name into history.

Based in London, Lyra is formed by English musicians Jenna (vocals), George (bass) and James (guitar) along with Italians Anselmo (drums) and Ej (keys). Lovers of the Motown sound, they claim inspiration from the likes of Adele, Lily Moore, Olivia Dean, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. They have nonetheless certainly added their own sublime, dream-like flavour to the mixture.

“Underneath a sultrily soothing electro-lounge tune lies a sombre reflection on internal struggles and self-doubt”

TR^NKS is on a mission to liberate us, and he does just that with his latest single ‘Hey! No Ego.’ The thumping, electro-punk track is an invitation to listeners, with the artist calling on us to rage with him against the hypocrisy of society.

TR^NKS – Hey! No Ego

TR^NKS, founded by Christian Davis, comes to us by way of North West London. Davis has an impressive resume — he’s been in indie rock band Six By Seven, formed the Nottingham shoegaze act Spotlight Kids, and has drummed with the likes of Soulsavers, Spiritualized, and electronic duo Anomic Soul.

“Three minutes and thirty seconds of pure, unadulterated frustration.”

Now, Davis is taking his sound to new heights. His love of early Warp, Rising High, and Tri-Angle Records inspired him to experiment with drum machines, an old Juno 60, and his laptop. The result was TR^NKS — music that aims to free us from the false hopes, illusions, and great expectations spoon-fed to us by a society whose sole aim is to lock us in a cage.

With ‘Hey! No Ego,’ TR^NKS captures this sentiment perfectly. The song is three minutes and thirty seconds of pure, unadulterated frustration. Backed by a pulsing, addictive beat that sticks in your head long after the track has stopped, Davis’ lyrics feel both like a cathartic emotional release and a war cry. TR^NKS is fighting against power structures that intend to strip us of who we are at our cores, and he’s asking us to take up arms alongside him.

TR^NKS is acutely aware of the injustices of the world, and he refuses to turn away from them. With ‘Hey! No Ego,’ he calls on us to do the same — and makes a very convincing argument in the process.

“If it’s easy and it’s cheap, you’re bored so you’ll have it”

Electropop artist Tapwaterlucy is back with another spectacular bopper called Speed Dial, a moving track with a highly relatable topic wrapped in a fancy auditive treat. Artful to the core, this song will entice you into Tapwaterlucy’s extravagant world.

Tapwaterlucy – Speed Dial

22-year-old Tapwaterlucy is a singer/songwriter from Hackney who is the personification of a self-made artist, producing most of her work all by herself or with friends in her parent’s spare room. Her distinctive approach to Electropop music has paid off in the thousands of plays on Spotify with only three singles, including her newest delivery, Speed Dial.

The inspiration for this gem comes from the aching product of the inevitable transition from being a teenager to a young adult and also how these changes may affect your relation with your friends. Things like careers, relationships, and the path they choose get in the way, altering those previously established connections, sometimes forever.

Between the touching theme of this track and the futuristic sound in Electropop, Speed Dial features a rich aural texture made of electronic effects and drum and bass beats.

While short in length (lasting less than two and a half minutes), this is compensated by its engaging dreamy atmosphere and on-point vocal work.

Speed Dial shines due to its timeless subject and beautiful arrangements.

Overall, this tune has an intriguing appeal, at the one hand, it doesn’t feel as robotic and artificial as the average Electropop piece, but it’s not either a bubblegum Pop melody. Tapwaterlucy found a midpoint where all these components met, resulting in a refreshing style that captivates your senses.

This is definitely a name worth keeping on your speed dial if you want to hear top-tier music!

Jagara’s swirling 80s tribute to the darker side of nightlife.

Jagara – Into The Night

Did the 80s ever really leave? The discovery of that first synth machine would affect music like never before, and even decades later, artists still love to hearken back to those era-defining sounds. I’m not being dismissive, incidentally, I love some 80s synths, and Jagara is giving me everything on ‘Into The Night’.

Jagara is the artist project of London-based singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Jane alongside her producer sisters Cat and Ruth (love a musical family) and occasionally producer Damjan Blazun. They’re no newcomers, having played alongside acts such as Bastille and Nilüfer Yanya, and this latest single fully cements their new new-wave style.

“Into The Night is a heavily 80s-influenced, bombastic tune which dives into nightlife and obsession.”

‘I don’t need to lose myself’ sings Jane, only half-convincing us with her distorted, evocative vocals. The lyrics are simple, describing some longing dynamic – ‘moving back as you get closer, don’t ever stop’ – focusing more on making each line a hook, which they absolutely are.

With its fluttering synths, pulsating bass and silky minor harmonics, it’s a completely infectious beat, showing influences of everyone from Kate Bush to ABBA to Human League to the Stock-Aitken-Waterman greats.

It’s a huge wall of sound with a clear nostalgic feel, yet somehow retains a modern edge. And it’s no surprise that the track has already been picked up for a dark Netflix drama.

With a moody music video to accompany it, Jagara have a powerful identity and the hooks to back it up.

We’ve all been there at some point in our lives, that feeling of impending doom, the sensation that we are walking towards uncertainty, is more common than you would think, and for Californian artist Prada-G, this particular theme is what mainly influenced his latest track called Doomer.

Prada-G – Doomer

Southern California-based Prada-G is a 26-year-old singer, songwriter, and producer on a mission to leave his mark on the music scene. His sound is an intriguing cocktail of different genres that evokes feelings of melancholy, containing Pop-Punk, Alternative Rock, and even some Post-Punk.

2021 saw his debut with the release of the well-received LP Nocturnal, which included collaborations with artists such as BRYOZA, ericdoa, and LiL Lotus. This work earned him a loyal fanbase and the attention of specialized media, who praised his eclectic sound and producing skills.

After this, Prada-G kept knocking it out of the park, delivering banger after banger all over 2022, harvesting streams and views, a tradition that he will continue with his newest offering, Doomer.

Doomer starts things off with a killer and exhilarating riff, accompanied by pulsating drums that will incite you to tap your feet to its infectious rhythm. All these elements create a fun dynamic with the poignantly driven lyrics, which tackle a theme that many will find solace in:

Doomer” is essentially a metaphor for how everyone feels internally at some point in their life. The title itself is derived from the actual term “Doomer” which means a pessimistic or fatalist individual. I wanted to shed light on a common theme of feeling lost but still moving forward without direction. Though I wouldn’t consider myself a “Doomer” I believe we all experience those feelings of self-demoralization and misunderstanding.” said Prada-G about the track.

“Doomer is a short yet effective melody with a good dose of creativity and originality.”

Prada-G has developed the formula to balance established musical patterns with enough freshness to craft a style that feels authentic. Expect to see and hear more from this Californian newcomer soon.

Ambient electronica meets late-night musings in Bonze’s latest track (Mercedes).

Bonze – (Mercedes)

‘Will you be a stranger when I turn 35?’ opens ‘(Mercedes)’, the latest release from Bonze. It’s a strong line that sets up all the agony and longing of young love, combined with the loneliness that usually visits us all at some point in our 20s. And just to be clear – the titular Mercedes is a girl, not a car. Though if you do want to write a love song to a car, no judgement.

Bonze is the project of British singer-songwriter-producer Jack Reardon. After years of floating around the music industry between performing, songwriting, and A&R, Bonze is the project that invites people into his world.

‘(Mercedes)’ is an atmospheric synth-led alt-pop track that captures the doubt and intensity of young love.

The lyrics capture all the late-night questions that appear when considering the overwhelming possibilities of love and long-term commitments – ‘Will you be the one I wait for the rest of my life?’ – as well as insecurities – ‘Even if you leave when we’re 45’. These are delivered in Bonze’s layered, hazy vocals, with some lovely falsetto notes, even if the effects do make it hard to understand the lyrics sometimes. The song injects some optimism as he admits ‘I know I’m better by your side’ but concedes ‘I’ll be in for a lonely night’. The titular lady is never directly mentioned, but the story is clear.

With its pulsing synths and ethereal vibes, the track shows influences of everything from Drake to 90s garage to The Chemical Brothers, yet it’s easy to let it ebb, flow and wash over you. It would also be perfect soundtrack material for some dark drama. Fans of ambience should keep an eye on Bonze.

Electronic artist Vujadejunky gives us his homeward journey-inspired track from his latest EP.

Vujadeunky – Homeward Bound Trajectory

What does a song of homecoming sound like to you? Is it folk harmonies and driving guitars, or quiet strings and bittersweet chords? Coming home can have many meanings, and Vujadejunky gives us his take on it with ‘Homeward Bound Trajectory’, keeping an uplifting tone throughout.

Vujedejunky is the project of independent music producer Christopher Stack. Making music since the age of 12, it’s only in recent years that he’s rediscovered his passion for it and began to release songs into the outside world. And he hasn’t wasted time lately either, releasing over 10 tracks since 2021. ‘Homeward Bound Trajectory’ is the title track of his latest EP, consisting of two different mixes of the 11-minute ambient piece, though I’ll only be focusing on the original mix.

‘Homeward Bound Trajectory’ is an accessible electronic instrumental piece, with a sincere sentiment at its heart, along with a hefty Europop influence.

Opening with static fuzz sounds and a few synths that have a touch of the 80s sci-fi to them, the beat soon kicks in, with mellow harmonies adding a real sweetness to it all. With its simple, childlike melodies, layers gradually build and fade yet a sense of hopefulness is maintained throughout.

The swirling layers do drop out when the track breaks down to a fuzzy synth bass and a beat, changing the mood to something more thoughtful. But when the beat rises again and a clap-along kick-snare beat is added, we’re back in an upbeat land heading for a triumphant finish. The piece ends gently with a piano reiterating some of the main themes. At 11 minutes, this might be too long for many listeners, but it’s a nice gateway track for anyone looking for a non-threatening route into electronic instrumental music.
