Alex Krawczky pays homage to Grateful Dead lore with new track Love Through Sound.

Alex Krawcky – Love Through Sound

Alex Krawczky, Canadian Folk Music Award nominee, is a folk pop singer-songwriter based in Toronto, Canada. Her latest release, ‘Love Through Sound’ is a touching tribute to peace, togetherness and the uplifting power of music. The track was co-written with long-time collaborator Robbie Roth and produced at Toronto’s Union Sound.

On a count of four, the song opens with a warm acoustic guitar melody, underpinned by steady, driving percussion that immediately sets a heartfelt and inviting tone. The arrangement feels both intimate and expansive.

Alex’s vocals float delicately over the instrumentation. Her voice is warm and expressive, carrying each lyric with gentle sincerity and emotional depth. There’s a sense of effortless control in her delivery, every note feels intentional, allowing the story of the song to unfold naturally.

The track pays homage to the classic Grateful Dead songs “Casey Jones,” “Cumberland Mine,” and “Uncle Sam’s Blues.” This influence is clear right from the opening lines: “Casey Jones, you’ve got me riding high,” followed by “Take me down to the Cumberland mine,” and “Uncle Sam’s blues were playing.” These lyrical nods create a bridge between eras, blending nostalgic references with a modern, heartfelt interpretation. Alex manages to honour the roots of these iconic tracks while maintaining her own distinct artistic identity.

Midway through the song, a short instrumental section emerges where a WAH pedal guitar takes centre stage. The tone is rich and expressive, lending the piece a touch of 1970s psychedelia. Behind it, haunting vocal harmonies drift gently, wrapping the soundscape in a subtle, otherworldly atmosphere. The interplay between the guitar and the harmonies builds tension and texture, making the listener feel suspended in a dreamlike moment before the rhythm gently pulls them back.

‘This is a folk song that feels almost dreamlike and ethereal in every note’

As the track moves toward its conclusion, the wah-laden guitar returns with renewed intensity. Alex joins in, harmonising with the guitar through soft “la la la’s,” creating a unique and dynamic closing section. It feels spontaneous yet intentional, a final expression of freedom and release. The ending leaves a lingering impression, as if the song continues to echo long after the final note fades.

Kicking off the new year on a high note, Netherlands-based singer-songwriter Jacob D. Edward returns with an introspective folk anthem, Sophie Take Me Dancing.

Jacob D. Edward, a skilled folk artist from the Netherlands, has earned the description of being a “slide projector of thought-provoking images and emotions.” His remarkable ability to craft intricate aural narratives allows him to fully immerse listeners in his world of poetic soundscapes. This talent has contributed to his growing reputation as a rising figure in the independent music scene, where his music resonates deeply with those who seek meaningful, reflective art.

Jacob D. Edward on Spotify

After concluding 2024 with the successful releases of Musings and En Route To The End, Jacob D. Edward embarks on a new phase of self-reflection with his latest track, Sophie Take Me Dancing. While it may initially seem like a catchy folk tune for the winter season, this song delves into deeper themes of anguish, neglect, and loneliness. Its underlying message reflects a profound cry for help, conveying a desperate hope for someone to come to the rescue.

Sophie Take Me Dancing is inspired by a deeply personal experience. Jacob offers further insight, explaining:

This song paints a portrait of a tortured artist much like Jan Wolkers’ famous novel Turkish Delight. It is about the desperation that can occur when you are up to your neck in your own filth. It is about my time living in Almere, the city is infamous for being terrible. Which was also my experience. I was barely hanging on to my sanity, and wanted only one thing: a waltz with my muse.”

With just an acoustic guitar and his signature heartfelt vocals, Jacob D. Edward powerfully conveys the raw emotions of Sophie Take Me Dancing. The minimalist yet captivating chord progression mirrors the heartache within the song, showcasing one of Jacob’s standout qualities—his exceptional ability to tell a story through music.

“Sophie Take Me Dancing presents a striking emotional balance, with its soulful essence complemented by deeply enticing songwriting.”

Jacob D. Edward will unveil a music video for Sophie Take Me Dancing on January 17th. The video will depict the destruction of Jacob’s workshop, with walls covered in images of his past experiences—symbolizing the eradication of his childhood traumas. With such a powerful visual narrative and a strong melody, Jacob continues to strengthen his presence in the independent folk music scene.

Laura Holliday releases the poignant new single, ‘Fibronostalgia’, a heartfelt folk-pop track that explores healing from past trauma and the daily struggles that accompany it.

Laura Holliday – Fibronostalgia

LA-based artist Laura Holliday has been writing and recording their own music since the age of 12. She creates thoughtful indie-pop music that explores themes of living with chronic illness, dealing with trauma, and embracing gender queerness. Laura’s lyrics take on a diaristic style, reflecting personal experiences, while her instrumental range spans from queer pop to folk-inspired, naturalistic tones. With a background in comedy, Laura approaches heavy topics with humour, making them feel more accessible and easier to process.

Their latest track, ‘Fibronostalgia’, is an emotional journey that delves into generational trauma, chronic fatigue, and the nature of memory. It reflects the exhaustion of trying to meet others’ expectations while struggling with a chronic illness, and the ongoing quest to feel worthy despite those limitations. The song paints a vivid picture of how trauma can subtly shape your life, often going unrecognized until years later, when its effects become clear, and the healing process begins.

Laura’s poignant lyrics keep the listener engaged from start to finish, offering a deeply personal and resonant experience. Musically, ‘Fibronostalgia’ delivers on its pop-folk promise with a bouncy arrangement of acoustic guitar, gentle percussion, and banjo. The production, handled expertly by Alyssa Wilkens, ensures that each element is clear and complements the others. Laura’s crisp vocals sit front and centre, supported by delicate backing harmonies that add depth to the track.

“Laura’s new single, Fibronostalgia, is a refreshing and empowering track that addresses chronic fatigue, a topic rarely explored in music. Its relatable story offers comfort to many, reminding listeners that they are not alone in their struggles.”

Singer-songwriter Jacob D. Edward delves into mortality with raw introspection in his latest single, En Route To The End.

Jacob D. Edward – En Route To The End

Based in the Netherlands, folk songwriter Jacob D. Edward crafts vivid, thought-provoking imagery and emotion, drawing inspiration from artists like Jason Molina, Damien Jurado, and Leonard Cohen. With a deep respect for his audience, Jacob invites listeners on an immersive journey, weaving them into his distinctive, romantically dissonant style.

In his new single En Route To The End, Jacob D. Edward draws inspiration from the novel by celebrated Dutch author Gerard Reve, yet the song’s core meaning delves into a profound meditation on mortality. Through this piece, Jacob confronts the inevitability of death and the process of accepting it, while also grappling with the sense of futility that can surround existence, ultimately creating a reflective exploration of life’s impermanence.

To bring En Route To The End to life, Jacob focused deeply on the lyrical meaning, using symbolic language to explore the challenge of overcoming anxieties surrounding death and dying. Reflecting on what ignited the inspiration for this tune, Jacob explains:

In the year I wrote the next album, many people in my inner circle died. Whilst this was happening I was incessantly reading Gerard Reve’s oeuvre. He often writes about death and legacy. It all came together in this song. Nothing lasts forever.”

Opting for unnatural harmonics in the intro, Jacob proves that sometimes less is more. With just his guitar, haunting backing vocals, and deep voice, he crafts a reflective, yearning atmosphere—capturing what he describes as “melancholia with a smile.”

En Route To The End is a cleverly crafted folk melody that stands out for its self-awareness, with its sharp and thoughtful lyricism taking centre stage.

En Route To The End is the first single from Jacob D. Edward’s upcoming album Borderline. Be sure to follow him on social media to stay updated on future releases.

After releasing a trio of well-received singles this year, DanFromUpstairs is set to make his mark with his eclectic debut album, Hopeless Fables.

DanFromUpstairs – Hopeless Fables

Brighton’s Daniel O’Brien, known as DanFromUpstairs, has been tirelessly promoting his debut full-length album. Embracing an eclectic approach, Dan blends multiple genres as a form of creative expression, a theme that resonates throughout the 11 tracks of his debut LP, Hopeless Fables.

With a diverse and vibrant mix of sounds spanning rock, electronica, hip-hop, funk, jungle, and folk, DanFromUpstairs challenges the notion of perfection that often surrounds ideas like life, death, and love.

What if the spirits that controlled our fate were just as hopeless as we are? What if death was flawed and clumsy? What if love could misfire? Would we still try to find order amidst the chaos?”

The album opens with the instrumental track Pearly Gates, a fitting introduction featuring a chaotic mix of sounds that gives way to emotional depth, setting the tone for the rest of the record. Cupid’s Error follows, with infectious beats and standout guitar work, enhanced by Dan’s collaborator Luke Matthews, whose vocals add a soothing element.

The album then takes an unpredictable turn with Cthulu, The Circus Animal, a drum & bass instrumental bursting with frantic scratching and saxophone melodies. In contrast, Genie in a Baggie offers a funky, danceable groove with spoken verses that pull you into its rhythm.

Death’s Diary, featuring rapper Surron the 7th, continues the upbeat energy with a captivating mix of female vocals and sharp rhymes. Two instrumental interludes follow, with Stork in a Storm delivering electronic arrangements and Grief slowing the pace, layering hazy effects and poignant guitar.

One of the album’s singles, Love, takes a refreshing look at this universal theme, supported by an irresistible guitar hook and vocals from Luke Matthews. Ugly Succubus brings futuristic flair, blending robotic effects with rapper BrokenPen’s dynamic wordplay.

As the album nears its conclusion, Happy Ending delivers another groovy track with energy and precision. The final song, Death’s Disciple, features singer-songwriter Elliot Albert Orchard, evoking a sombre mood with acoustic guitar and deep vocals, closing the album with an ethereal, theatrical flourish.

Hopeless Fables offers an engaging collection of thought-provoking musical stories, with its rich variety and standout performances inviting listeners to return to this sonic experience again and again.

With its wide range of genres and intriguing themes, Hopeless Fables stands as a remarkable achievement for DanFromUpstairs, delivering an otherworldly experience that’s well worth revisiting.

Folk artist Sherayah introduces her new single Where The Flowers Don’t Grow, conveying a powerful allegory of perseverance, resilience and bravery.

Sherayah – Flowers Don’t Grow

Originally from Modesto, California, Sherayah is an alternative folk-pop artist known for her ability to craft heartfelt, emotionally driven stories. Her music is characterized by ethereal soundscapes that weave between melancholy and introspection. Now based in Santa Ana, California, she has collaborated with renowned producers such as Mark Batstone and Justin Sinclair known for their work with artists like Ilsey, Weezer, and Scary Pockets.

Just a few months ago, Sherayah released her debut single Blue Moon, marking both her introduction to the music scene and a meaningful contribution to a cause. To celebrate its release, she hosted a special event and partnered with the non-profit organization Home-y Made Meals, raising funds to support their mission of providing meals to unhoused communities.

Sherayah credits artists like Lord Huron, Maggie Rogers, and Kacey Musgraves as influences that have shaped her sound. Their impact is distinctly felt in her latest song, Where The Flowers Don’t Grow, an anthem celebrating resilience and courage.

Living in California, I know the dry seasons well—summer droughts transform vibrant green hills into barren brown. Purpose can wither in a similar way. What was once a passionate pursuit of a dream can often give way to doubt, leaving little room for growth. Through this song, my hope is to inspire resilience and encourage perseverance, even in life’s droughts.” – said the artist about the song.

Enhanced by its lively tempo and cheerful instrumentation, Where The Flowers Don’t Grow takes the aforementioned themes of resistance and creates a blissful soundtrack. With weeping guitars, subtle drums, and heartfelt vocals, this melody is a must-listen for anyone confronting adversity.

Where The Flowers Don’t Grow is a heartwarming folk piece filled with positivity and exceptional musicianship.

In every aspect of her musical journey, from heartfelt songwriting to impeccable musicianship, Sherayah demonstrates a profound artistic passion. As she continues to evolve her sound, Sherayah’s undeniable talent blooms brightly, even where the flowers don’t grow.

London folk duo Hazey Jane have released their heartwarming track, Worthy of Peace, inspired by a life-changing experience.

Hazey Jane – Worthy of Peace

Hailing from London, Hazey Jane is known for crafting songs that delve into themes of joy, calm, and friendship amidst an ever-changing and challenging world. Their sound combines soothing acoustic guitars with traditional folk storytelling. Bobby and Laurent’s long-lasting friendship dates back to their secondary school days, when they played their first show together at the age of 14.

Hazey Jane successfully crowdfunded their debut EP, Us On A Wire, released in August 2016, followed by their first UK headline tour, selling out venues across the southeast. Their sophomore EP, Lifeboat, released in June 2018, received support from BBC Introducing London, Record of the Day, and Sofar Sounds. This success led to performances at several UK festivals, including Glastonbury, The Great Escape, and Cambridge Folk Festival.

Fast forward to June 21, 2024, when Hazey Jane unveiled their latest offering, Worthy of Peace. This sweet folk melody, written by lead singer Bobby, was inspired by his life-saving surgery, which required a five-week hospital stay followed by three months of rehabilitation at home. A prolonged hospital stay can be challenging, but re-emerging into the world makes you appreciate the smallest and seemingly insignificant things so much more. This indescribable sensation of peace forms the thematic core of the composition.

In classic folk fashion, Worthy of Peace embraces these emotions through soothing guitar fingerpicking, serene vocals, harmonious back vocals, and a majestic string section that evokes an atmosphere of grandiose calmness—truly “medicine for the soul.”

Worthy of Peace is an inspiring showcase of folk mastery and a brilliant exercise in the cathartic power of music.

This track is part of the celebration for Hazey Jane’s debut album, Swim, set for release on July 23, with a launch gig at The Lexington in London, supported by Iris & Steel and Austel. Make sure to be there if you enjoy what you hear!

The Lofty Pines – ‘Light At The Door’

In days where highly produced and layered music is widely accessible, something is endearing and refreshing about a 3-piece acoustic trio. Meet The Lofty Pines, who combine a mandolin, a guitar, a fiddle and their vocals to create their own sound, blending bluegrass, folk, Americana and singer-songwriter styles.

The Lofty Pines are a band based out of Erie, Colorado. The band are jumping straight in with a debut album, with this release being the title track.

‘Light At The Door’ is a tender, heartwarming ballad with a folk sensibility and a gorgeous atmosphere.

The lyrics are slowly paced, but thoughtfully written, describing a relationship that’s gone awry and needs repairing. ‘Like a beggar I was cold and alone’, narrates the song, affirming that there is still ‘a light at the door’ for his love and that even in the face of adversity, he will ‘knock a little louder sometime’. These lyrics are delivered in light, plaintive lead vocals combined with sweet backing harmonies, and graceful, lilting melodies.

The production blends and balances the chiming mandolin, the steady acoustic guitar and the wistful fiddle, allowing each one to push through at different moments, including instrumental solos that showcase what are clearly some very skilled players. It’s never too complicated but highly effective, creating a twinkling, warm atmosphere with a little nostalgia thrown in. Any fans of folk or country looking for a summer evening waltz could do much worse than giving this track a spin.
