edwood evwrit – Paternity Test

Sometimes, life frustrations bring us right back to being a little kid, or a surly teenager, and the temptation to shout ‘you ain’t my daddy’ is too strong. edword evwrit gleefully gives in to this temptation on this clapback track, throwing in some sharp hooks and smart rhymes while he’s at it.

edword evwrit is a rapper hailing from the Bay Area in California. Often collaborating with producer Rayphonic, this track comes from his upcoming album, ‘Temporary Tattoo’, an opportunity for edword to push himself emotionally, in his own words, ‘physically and metaphysically put my heart on my sleeve’.

‘Paternity Test’ is a sharp rap track with influences of hip-hop and neo-soul, a smart mouth come-back to those who think to give unsolicited advice.

The title is a play on the main hook, ‘you ain’t my daddy’, a chant going ‘you can’t tell me what to do cos it don’t work that way’ which is ripe for singing along. The flow builds impressively, with smart, twisted rhymes like ‘don’t think you got some authority, my face ain’t that encouraging’ and wry remarks like ‘my mom don’t know your name’. The bridge humorously builds on the title with lines like ‘you ain’t pick me up, I don’t see you after school’.

The production combines smooth synth lines with a tripping bass. Skipping beats combine with claps and hi-hats and unexpected stings to create some spiky percussion, while dreamy samples and backing vocals soften it out. There are lots of little unexpected moments to enjoy – fans of genre-blending rap and hip-hop should give the album a listen.

Francesca Lu’s sophomore release Digital Deflect shows an artist in complete control and brimming with confidence.

Francesca Lu – Digital Deflect

‘Digital Deflect’ is the second single from Kent-based singer, songwriter and producer, Francesca Lu. Following the success of her debut track, the self-produced ‘Saturday Soon’ released back in April, the artist has collaborated with producer and musician, Jordan Velez for her next release, a much smoother and richer affair, that still maintains the originality and quirkiness exhibited on her debut.

The track starts off with an ambling hip hop drum beat reminiscent of Eric B. & Rakim’s ‘Paid In Full’ with jazzy sax frills before Lu’s vocals come in, their distinctly low-fi nature suggesting something pitched between Melody’s Echo Chamber and Cults. Her voice sounds dislocated from the layers of sound, echoing the song’s pre-occupation with technology as a distraction, yet it is powerful enough to maintain a firm grip throughout. There is a lot going on in the music, from jazz breaks and funky asides to sunshine chords and sounds of technology switching off and on. But Lu manages to contain this all within a pop wrapper, so the track doesn’t veer off too much into indulgent experimentation, which considering the wealth of sounds and their effective emotions is no mean feat. Nothing is lost or surplus, the track is all gains.

“It’s two people, finding comfort in one another, though that comfort is through feeling seen. So the catch is, they are being seen in a way, and at a time, where they feel disconnected from themselves; they are being flattered for who they wish to be, not for who they truly are.”

‘Digital Deflect’ is a track essentially about facing up and being your true self and finding that confidence to do it. As a second release for Francesca Lu, it conversely shows an artist that has found that confidence which feeds into the track, resulting in a well-produced and immersive single.

Following the success of his last track, ‘CHANGE,’ singer-songwriter YUKEE makes a comeback with his third single, ‘Lonely.’ A heartfelt tribute to introspective contemplations on life.

YUKEE – Lonely

Simon Burkhardt, the talented musician from Göttingen, Germany, known by his stage name YUKEE, reveals his innermost emotions in his latest release, ‘Lonely.’ With a reputation for introspection, he deftly transforms personal experiences into musical expressions, and ‘Lonely’ exemplifies this evocative artistry. The song delves deep into the paradox of feeling surrounded by people while grappling with an overwhelming sense of solitude.

Contrasting sharply with YUKEE’s previous upbeat track, ‘CHANGE,’ ‘Lonely’ takes us on a different journey as he pours his heart into the rap verses. His poignant crooning, “I’m stuck in the ways I paved myself, by trying to be somebody else,” leads us through his reflections and contemplations on his own identity. The heartfelt chorus emerges with a distinct voice as he sings, “And I’m not alone but lonely / So many tried to call me, but I can’t answer sociophobia,” bravely confronting the universal human experience of loneliness amid societal connections. These soul-baring lines resonate profoundly with anyone who has felt the burden of people’s expectations and the internal battles that arise from the quest to belong.

YUKEE’s new song production showcases his creative flair in music, fearlessly diving into a captivating blend of genres like hip hop/rap. A true virtuoso, he experiments with various musical elements and technicalities, ensuring that his message resonates powerfully with his audience.

The vulnerability displayed in ‘Lonely’ unveils a new facet of YUKEE’s artistry, allowing listeners to connect with the raw emotions he lays bare. The melodic rap ballad serves as a bittersweet reminder of the complexities of human emotions, inviting us to embrace our own vulnerabilities. YUKEE’s ability to blend introspection and musicality makes ‘Lonely’ a captivating and immersive experience for fans of this kind of music.

“With its comforting yet introspective essence, ‘Lonely’ stands as a creatively penned, rap-infused masterpiece, courageously exploring life’s mundane struggles.”

Gold Blend ‘Harry’ Tongue-in-cheek rap with genuine skills.

Gold Blend – Harry

‘Not that bad but could be better’ was a line that stood out to me in Gold Blend’s ‘Harry’. Perhaps it was some classic British understatement, perhaps it was poking fun at the typical overconfidence and bravado displayed in rap. But Gold Blend doesn’t underrate his own skills – he compares himself to a wizard on this track’ – and nor should he. This is an exciting British rap talent.

Gold Blend is a British rapper and songwriter, and the self-proclaimed “best rapper in the South West”. With enthusiastic support from the likes of BBC Introducing, it looks like he’ll be bringing us some consistent releases through 2023.

‘Harry’ is a hugely energetic rap track with a wry sense of humour, shouting its own talents while poking fun at itself as well.

The titular hook is incredibly catchy and should be a hit at any live gig – ‘Jump on the beat in the booth and my boys say, This man here is a wizard, Harry, Harry, Harry’. The lyrics feature plenty of British references, making this feel grounded in UK culture – including a reference to Gold Blend’s south-west origins, ‘a seaside land’ full of inhabitants with ‘menthol breath’. There are some enjoyable pop culture references too – ‘Two cool cats like Scat and Thomas O’Malley’ – and some seriously impressive rhymes. The delivery is rapid and energetic, bordering on unhinged – you wonder when on earth he breathes during the track – but it’s tons of fun.

The production is stripped back, focusing on a vaguely mariachi trumpet line and some pulled-back hi-hat beats. It’s designed to let us focus on the rap, and it’s effective in doing that. Fans of rap, particularly British rap and quirkier rap, will love this.

Rising alternative artist NxFxce is a mysterious figure in the independent scene. His sound is an enticing blending of styles that encompasses R&B, Pop, and Rap, all with an experimental twist guaranteeing to blow minds with honest lyricism and out-of-the-box production.

NxFxce – bff

2022 was not only the debut for NxFxce but also the year on which this singer went on a meteoric streak with his first three releases, sad lil boi, Pipe Down, and Breezy, each achieving thousands of streams and confirming the charming appeal that this incognito performer has.

His fourth and final offering from last year, bff is a touching melody that deals with the sorrowful feeling that comes after parting ways from a long-term relationship.

Elaborating more on the meaning of this tune, NxFxce explains:

The inspiration came from me and someone going our separate ways and I felt as if my best friend had just left. Writing the song took some time only because I had to go through that experience in order to express it and I literally just got up one night after having the beat for a couple months and I just started recording and the hook was created and then lyrics for the verse came later.”

Reverberating back vocal effects and infectious beats introduce us to this piece, followed by NxFxce auto-tuned vocals and the poignant, dreamy arrangements dictating the atmosphere for this track, capturing your attention due to this artist’s highly emotional songwriting.

Bff is a captivating song, excelling at delivering its emotive theme through a colourful and memorable production.

There is something that feels very special about NxFxce, whether it is his eye-catching presentation or his emotive sound, the truth is that this is a name that you should keep in the back of your head because more likely you will hear it again in 2023.

Utah rapper Tay Toe has revealed his debut album Habits and Setbacks, a collection of 11 tracks that works as an open window to his mind, exhibiting his versatile flow and praiseworthy skillset. The album further establishes him as a promising name in the rap game.

Tay Toe – Habits and Setbacks

Originally from Los Angeles but currently residing in Salt Lake City, Tay Toe’s humble origins go back to when he was fifteen years old, a time when he wrote songs therapeutically, this would continue until he turned 21 and decided to take it more seriously by posting his material online and playing a couple of gigs every month.

After a couple of releases and a lot of hard work, Tay Toe released his first full-length work called Habits and Setbacks, an album that meant a huge step forward for his career.

Tracks like Meet Again, Life of Blues, and Invincible display a vulnerable side, showcasing introspective lyrics that exhibit the ups and downs in the life of this young MC, going deep into highly personal moments depicted through dynamic verses and impactful rhymes.

Need To Know lets us see another facet of Tay Toe, replacing the smooth rhymes with clean vocals in a more ballad-oriented style with a piano accompaniment highlighting the fragility of its theme.

The production of this LP is rich and colourful with a wide variety of samples and instrumentals, like in the song What You Deserve and its acoustic guitar intertwining with pulsating beats, or in That’s Fine and its auto-tuned chorus, while others like the closure Love Goes burst with emotion due to its heart-aching topic.

But not everything is poignancy and heartbreak in this album. In Think of You, Tay shows he ain’t no pushover, demonstrating he can also produce a cutting and savage diss track when he needs to.

Also, in the jams You The Man and Christian, he spits some wild and upfront bars, never shying away from who he truly is.

“Habits and Setbacks is a well-rounded, honest compilation of Hip-hop tracks. It’s as real as it gets and direct from the heart.”

Tay Toe’s debut record feels authentic, never coming up as pretentious or fake. Its emotive lyrical work makes it feel full of significance on a personal level, a factor to which many people will relate.

Renowned producer John Harrison aka P*nut has unveiled a new 7-track EP called Wake Up in collaboration with Franz Job and Qua.

P*nut – Wake Up

With a lengthy career already under his belt, John is a multi-platinum and Grammy award winner who, in the past, has collaborated with legends such as Dido, Faithless, and Amy Winehouse, to name a few.

But not everything has been a collaboration for his second album Sweet As he was signed by Sony BMG and received plenty of praise from the UK’s Hip-hop scene, as well as support from Tim Westwood on Radio 1. All this background can be appreciated in his latest offering, Wake Up

As if it was some kind of sonic self-awareness, opener Wake Up is an enlightening gem that gives us a small taste of what this producer is all about. His layered production, which oscillates between Caribbean and Hip-hop beats, functions as the perfect introductory canvas for Franz and Quas’s rhymes and vocal work.

In Make Room For Me, Qua shows her stunning vocal capabilities, having more time to display her privileged voice while the arrangements exude chillness and good vibes.

Pure, unfiltered love is the best way to describe Never Stop, with its catchy chorus and foot-tapping beats, this melody is as comforting as it is addictive.

Outro is pretty much an extension of the previous track, reproducing the earlier mentioned chorus in a loop with children’s voices, giving this melody a short yet refreshing new face.

But the surprises don’t end there because the final three tracks are remixed versions of the first songs of this work by the hand of KASPERG and Murder He Wrote, making some tweaks here and there, like the cool Drum N Bass in Make Room For Me or the complete reworking of Never Stop.

It is hard to categorize Wake Up under any specific umbrella due to its many elements which make this EP a thing of its own. Like a delicious dish with many ingredients, P*nut has crafted a delightful aural experience that will turn many frowns upside down.

Putting the name of his native Malta on high, rapper Rheez is here to share his dazzling and atypical spin on Hip-hop while also showing the world the artistic quality that exists in this particular region of Europe.

Rheez – Temporary Forever

Always determined to represent his country and his fellow compatriots, Malta-born, UK-raised Rheez takes pride in his roots, looking to become a voice for the music scene of his beloved nation.

Following the success of tracks like True Wounds and Pe$os, both of which have garnered thousands of streams, Rheez has released another hot jam that is already doing the same as its predecessors, this is Temporary Forever.

Temporary Forever initiates with a hazy beat track and dreamy effects, introducing chill R&B vocals that build into a more traditional hard-edged Hip-hop jammer, Rheez accent grants this melody with a distinctive style that is hard to compare. On top of that, the explicit and highly intimate lyrics do a tremendous job of recreating the discomfort of a recent heartbreak.

And talking about the lyrics, this is what Rheez had to say about the message in this piece:

My goal with the track is to give an insight on a relationship of love that didn’t work out due to circumstances beyond control, and even though things hurt, we must reflect on them to move forward in our lives.”

Temporary Forever is a song that shines due to its absorbing structure, managing to balance sensitivity and edginess in a compelling way.

There is no denying that Rheez is going through good momentum right now, receiving coverage from dozens of specialized blogs and increasing his popularity. Rheez has proved that the hype is real, and he’s not going anywhere.

Bringing the best out of three worlds, producer Boom Dice has gathered a formidable squad of artists, teaming up with Avie Sheck and Lil Esso for a smooth R&B jam called Show Me More in what feels like a match made in heaven.

Boom Dice & Avie Sheck Ft. Lil Esso – ‘Show Me More’

Boom Dice is a multi-Grammy-nominated / BRIT award-winning producer, songwriter, and artist from Toronto. His vast and formidable curriculum includes collaborations with icons such as Jay Z, Disclosure, John Newman, and Sofi Tukker, among many more.

Aside from the millions of streams achieved, he has also received several awards, including gold and platinum certifications.

On this occasion, he has chosen to work with singer Avie Sheck and the rapper Lil Esso for his newest offering, Show Me More.

Los Angeles-based Avie Sheck is a performer with influences from Nu Metal to Hip-hop and R&B. His versatile vocal range and captivating live shows have made him an upcoming act worth keeping an eye on.

The last element of this musical equation is Lil Esso, a Canadian rapper with three and a half years of experience creating and mixing his own work. Since day one, he has demonstrated to possess an innate talent that has made some heads turn, including Boom Dice himself.

Following some unsuccessful attempts, Boom Dice found in Avie and Lil Esso the ideal accompaniment for this stunning musical work, as he explains:

After trying a number of times with artists that just didn’t bring the track to life, I would say my inspiration was to prove a point that you don’t have to give up on a piece of music and that it will always find the right home in the end. It is a lesson I have always told artists I work with and it is proven time after time in my day-to-day output.”

As soon as the song starts, Avie’s light and energetic vocals become the focal point, adding an extra flair to Boom’s smooth production, which consists of minimal beats and layered effects. Setting the stage for Lil Esso to show up and spit some hot bars, this conjunct effort results in a jammer overflowed with sensuality and swag.

Show Me More is a delightful tune, succeeding thanks to its stellar production and vibrant performances.

Boom Dice’s experience as a top-tier producer is more than evident in this gem, not only in the studio but also at the time of choosing his coworkers. Elegantly alluring and provocative, this is a piece that you won’t be able to forget.
