Chasing dreams can be exhausting. Anna Wolf releases her new single Prayers, a raw and honest portrait of faith, growth and self-reflection.

Anna Wolf – Prayers

Following the biographical ‘Dear Daddy‘, Prayers is the second single to emerge from Anna Wolf’s time spent at Johnny Cash’s – Cash Cabin Studios in Hendersonville, Tennessee, and there was clearly something very special in the water.

And before you start thinking this is some religious statement, Anna Wolf quickly counters: “This song and video are for everyone, believers, non-believers, spiritual
and religious alike. The point here is that happiness is always accompanied by love.

Prayers was actually inspired and shaped by the news that a dear friend had discovered he had cancer at the same time as his wife. Anna Wolf perfectly captures the feelings of confusion and heartbreak when such unexpected life events occur.

There is something about this track that had me recalling Funeral-era Arcade Fire, maybe it’s arrangement, the folksy instrumentation or the passion that pours from every note. Listen to the end, and it literally becomes a spiritual experience.

Few artists demonstrate the vulnerability and empathy that Anna Wolf exudes in her songwriting. Her superpower is her ability to turn thoughts and experiences into relatable anthems. Produced by Trey Call, Prayers is about questioning, learning and unlearning the growth that happens when we allow ourselves to be changed.

The accompanying music video was directed and edited by Anna Wolf and filmed by photographer and frequent collaborator Paul Harries (Slipknot, Nirvana, My Chemical Romance). The video cleverly combines AI-generated images with 8mm footage, providing a new storytelling format.

“Prayers is Anna Wolf at her very best, it’s personal, painful and positive in equal measure. It’s hard not to be moved by the passion in this song.”

Filmed against a natural backdrop, the video moves between scenes of running,
performing and quiet reflection. It includes childhood memories, archival clips from
previous videos and symbolic moments that explore ambition, guidance and
acceptance. Old performance footage appears as a mirror of success and its lessons

“When I was chasing dreams, I ended up exhausted,” says Anna. “Stepping back
from the dream has brought me a richer life, one free from the constant
disappointment of unmet expectations.

Anna calls “Prayers” her most personal and favourite video yet. “This was about
showing both the rawness and the hope. Using AI alongside real footage gave me a
way to connect past, present and future.”

Slyrydes finally release their debut album, and it has been well worth the wait.

Introducing Slyrydes

Slyrydes are a critically acclaimed post-punk band from Galway City, Co. Galway, Ireland. They met in a late-night bar where singer Rafto worked.

In 2013, they eventually began playing music together, and it quickly became something very real, with the passion from those late-night music debates naturally translating into a cohesive sound.

However, the path to their debut album has been anything but smooth. In one interview, Fuz from the band describes a journey of chaos and individual self-disruption with rehab, arrests and fighting threatening to knock them off-course. Thankfully, they eventually managed to knuckle down.

In 2019, Slyrydes released their debut single, which was immediately championed by Paul McCloone (The Undertones) on his nationwide radio show on Today FM.

A year later, they had released five singles into the world. Buzz and momentum was growing, and plans were brewing for some major live shows. Then COVID hit, and like so many artists at the time, the enforced hiatus threatened their very future.

Now, after years of personal growth and collective survival, Slyrydes have made it to the start, with the release of their debut album, What Happens If You Get Happy.

“From the beginning, we said we wanted to make important music, the kind that mattered to people,” says Eoin Reilly. “We really lived it. Now we are in a healthier place to put this music out and give it the platform it deserves”

Slyrydes – What Happens If You Get Happy

“This is a visceral, unflinching, and honest record that grabs you from the outset and refuses to let go.”

It feels fitting that the album opener is ‘Mental Health’, the release of this album might just be the ultimate cathartic therapy for a band that openly admits to struggling with various mental health issues and self-destructive tendencies.

We are very honest with our lyrics and music. We’d be taking the piss if we ignored how we felt and started singing about surfing or that paint by numbers person loves another person shit.” [Fuz]

The album continues with the former single, I Claim To Be Intelligent. You can almost feel the tension and personal anxiety building on this track, before it can no longer be contained.  The video remains one of the most visually powerful I can remember seeing since starting this blog.

Boy In The Debs Suit is a poignant and frantic search for a missing school graduate. The next three tracks, Procrastination Is A Fear Of Failure (PIAFOF), Ahern, and Stutter, are all previously unreleased tracks.

PIAFOF is another deeply personal track that hints at the mindset of a band that has frequently tetered on the brink. Ahern is a jittery, intense affair that tackles the essence of being Irish.

Ahern, meaning “descendant of Eachthighearna” is an Irish surname. Variants of the surname include Ahearn(e) and Hearn(e). There are 2718 people with the surname Ahern in Ireland, and 1404 people in the United Kingdom.

Long-term fans of the band will recall former singles, Dangerous Animals and Out Patience. Both sound as fresh and exciting as they did on first release. This is a band unafraid to explore the darker edges of modern life.

The lead single from the album is track 11 ‘Famous To Five Million’, a song about what comes after fleeting fame. Of the new tracks, this is an obvious standout moment.

“I hope you keep your head and still remember me. You’re famous to five million.”

The album ends with ‘Just For Show’, a powerful and direct reminder that suicide affects lives, and the deaths from suicide in Ireland should be treated as more than cold statistics.

What Happens If You Get Happy is a 12-track album forged in genuine fire. Six of its tracks have never been heard before. It’s a record that asks big questions but doesn’t flinch from the answers.

“We’ve bled for this record literally and figuratively,” Mark Raftery “It’s been a long road, but maybe we needed that time apart to figure out who we really are. This album is our story.” Mark Comer

With plans to bring their explosive live show back on the road, Slyrydes are ready to make the statement they always promised, and we can’t wait to see what comes next. This band remain important.

Sol Paradise

Sol is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter from London, whose sound blends elements of jazz, funk, and neo-soul. His latest EP, In the Garden, has received significant recognition, garnering over 500,000 streams, including features on Spotify Fresh Finds UK, BBC R6, and Jazz UK.

It’s clear his star is rising; his streaming success and media recognition led him to play the Brick Lane Jazz Festival and the inaugural SXSW London.

I was lucky enough to attend his sold-out show at Omeara last night in London. This show was the final night of his debut UK headline tour, where he sold out every single night.

His latest EP, In The Garden, feels like the perfect soundtrack for a balmy summer’s evening lying in the park. There is a joyous calmness to this record, which skillfully and playfully fuses old school Jazz with a delightful dollop of funk and soul.

At moments, this record made me think of Stevie Wonder’s Innervisions. Sol Paradise is a North Londoner, and somehow, you can tell, there is something distinctly urban about this record. It’s forged from a life in the city.

As a live proposition, Sol Paradise and his band are a compelling yet easy listen. It’s cool, effortless and meandering. Trumpets, Saxophones and Flutes elevate the style alongside keys, guitars and drums. It’s a room swelling sound that sweeps you up and away.

Go lose yourself in this EP on your next stroll around your neighbourhood, or play it to impress your friends at your next park picnic.

15-year-old singer-songwriter Emilia explores infatuation on new single “Beautiful Boy”.

Emilia – Beautiful Boy

Following her breakout single Tattoos, rising artist Emilia returns with her much-anticipated follow-up, Beautiful Boy a bold and poetic exploration of infatuation, obsession, and the intense vulnerability of youthful desire. At just 15, Emilia continues to defy expectations with her mature storytelling and atmospheric soundscapes.

Beautiful Boy blends melancholic vocals, shimmering melodies, and striking lyrical contrasts to capture the electrifying pull of admiration from afar, where fantasy blurs with reality and longing becomes almost surreal.

“I wanted to capture that feeling of falling for someone you barely know, but somehow feel connected to,” Emilia explains. “It’s innocent, intense, a bit scary, and completely real when you’re feeling it. There’s something beautiful and strange about those emotions.”

The lyrics shift from tender admiration: “beautiful boy with the kindest voice / and pale green eyes” to darker undercurrents of obsession “let me gouge out your eyes / leave them on me day and night”.

Beautiful Boy is both dreamy and dark. It showcases Emilia’s rare ability to blend emotional fragility with fearless honesty. Emilia proves once again that age is no barrier to emotional depth. Her music speaks to the raw, unfiltered experiences of youth with a voice that is unmistakably her own, one that continues to resonate long after the song ends.

This is Emilia’s second song, produced by Jake Wherry, founder and producer of The Herbaliser.

Introducing Beat ‘N Track, a FREE interactive music map that connects artists with venues, services, freelancers, fans and even other musicians.

The ultimate unsigned guide

Frustrated by legacy music services like The Unsigned Guide, which charge artists to access industry contacts, Major Labl Artist Club co-founders Mark Knight and Sam Bardens set about creating a viable modern solution that allows independent artists to make connections without payment.

Beat ‘N Track aims to become the ultimate unsigned guide, music industry directory and a one-stop shop for musicians looking to find other musicians or connect with music industry services.

“As an independent artist myself, I’ve always found it frustrating that artists have to pay to access music contacts while the businesses that profit from musicians are listed for free.” Explains Sam Bardens.

Facilitating local music discovery

Whilst Beat ‘N Track was primarily designed to facilitate connections among artists within the music industry, it offers the added benefit of enabling serendipitous music discovery. Music fans can browse Beat ‘N Track to discover artists, venues, and gigs in any given area, with direct links to ticket sales.

Discover music in your area on Beat 'N Track

When the speed of change feels overwhelming, we crave comfortable familiarity and NEEDSHES provide that in abundance with the 80s retro stylings of their new single ‘Changes’.

NEEDSHES – Changes

When was the last time you listened to an artist from Tashkent in Uzbekistan? Introducing NEEDSHES, the brainchild of songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Otabek Salamov. His musical journey started at the age of 13 when he won first prize for his precision on the Clarinet, his eclectic journey next led him to compose and growl metalcore in nightclubs before he settled on a softer more melancholic sound.

NEEDSHES’ music has been featured in Lay’s TV ad campaigns across Europe, numerous Renault and LADA TV commercials, Thrillers such as “Break,” and “She Sees Red,” plus sitcoms, and cartoons. Along the way, he has won the Independent Music and Unsigned Only awards.

His new single ‘Changes’ deals with the frustrating and overwhelming speed of change, it’s about the moment when life becomes almost futile and even the things you love become a source of frustration.

It’s easy to understand this as a Pandemic Song but it’s become even more relatable in a Trump 2.0 world.

“And all my heroes turn into nothing And all my feelings something is tearing me apart And all my demons are dancing freely And everything I loved Now is something that I hate, I hate, I hate.”

The downbeat lyrics are countered by the upbeat, jaunty melody. In this regard, it reminds us of The Bangles ‘Manic Monday’ like this track, it’s hard not to sing along feeling the story will still ultimately end well.

The time-consuming and costly nature of studio recording has become an increasingly problematic bottleneck for independent artists. Now, with the launch of Setmixer across UK grassroots venues, it seems the perfect time to reconsider how independent artists approach live recording and content creation.

The traditional live recording model for unsigned artists

Currently, artists looking to capture their live performances face several challenges. They either need to hire recording engineers and equipment for specific shows (often costing hundreds of pounds), rely on low-quality audience recordings, or forgo recording altogether. Those who do manage to record their performances then face weeks of waiting for mixing and mastering before they can share anything with their fans.

Setmixer offers an innovative alternative

7.4M performances are lost each year, when the artist leaves the stage, the moment is gone, forever. Until now. Setmixer is transforming this landscape by installing permanent, automated recording systems in grassroots venues across the UK. The concept is brilliantly simple: every time you perform, your entire set is professionally recorded and automatically mixed within 12 hours. No extra setup, no waiting around, no hefty studio bills.

Live at Paper Dress Vintage

Benefits to independent artists

When you play at a Setmixer-equipped venue, you receive a professionally mixed recording of your performance for promotional use at no cost. If you want to distribute the recording to fans you maintain 70% of the proceeds – dramatically more than traditional recording arrangements. Or if you want to access the multitrack stems for your own mixing, then you can easily get those for a small fee.

The quality speaks for itself

With over 5,000 shows recorded across 40 venues and consistently high ratings from artists (4.8 stars), Setmixer is already proving its worth to the grassroots music community. Their partnership with the Music Venue Trust means this technology will soon be available in many more venues across the UK.

A game-changer for content creation

For independent artists juggling social media demands with tight budgets, Setmixer presents an elegant solution. Every gig becomes an opportunity to capture professional-quality content that can be shared with fans the very next day. No more choosing between expensive studio time and subpar recordings – you can focus on what matters most: performing.

What does this mean for the future of live music?

Just as streaming services transformed music distribution, Setmixer is poised to revolutionise live recording. The ability to capture every performance professionally and share it with fans almost immediately opens up exciting new possibilities for artist-fan engagement and revenue streams.

The next time you’re booking a show, ask the venue if they’re equipped with Setmixer

If they’re not, let them know about the partnership with Music Venue Trust. As more venues adopt this technology, it has the potential to become as fundamental to the grassroots music scene as the PA system itself.

In a world where content is king and authentic live performances are more valued than ever, Setmixer isn’t just offering a service – it’s providing a crucial tool for the modern independent artist’s success.

Do you remember the time when Oasis ruled the world and their B-Sides were better than everyone else’s A-Sides? If you were a fan of The Masterplan, you might just appreciate Howling Hawk, a band keen to return to a time when bands had choruses and songs sound like B-sides from 95.

Howling Hawk – Ramona

Howling Hawk is a fusion of geography and inspiration. With members from Chile, Italy and the UK (Camden to be precise) they channel Britpop, The 60s Invasion and The Strokes to produce a blend of anthemic indie rock.

Howling Hawk on Spotify

This exciting five-piece consisting of Paolo, Gonzalo, Jimmy, Clemente and Jim launch themselves into the world with their debut single Ramona. They openly confess there is no Ramona! But they rightly conclude “There is nothing better than singing a girl’s name over a heavy chord. “There is no Sally, but she’s turned up in loads of great tunes. Ramona might be our Sally, until I write a song about Sally too.”

The story behind the song goes a little deeper and is inspired by a boy losing his mind over a girl and trying to navigate his way in the world. It’s a classic story befitting a classic-sounding single. Ramona was recorded at Orange Hill Studios in Brentford working alongside talented engineer and music photographer James Stirrat and Cheff Cuco who mixed the track.

“Ramona is two parts Oasis, one part Stone Roses and a healthy dollop of Howling Hawk, it’s the musical equivalent of finding your old Doc-Martens at the back of the cupboard.”

The name Howling Hawk just sounds like a band you need to see live! Unsurprisingly they have already started gigging around London playing shows at legendary grassroots venues including The Hope & Anchor and The Dublin Castle. They also played their first headline show at Rooz Studio and found themselves in the presence of members of Babyshambles, who they describe as rock ‘n roll royalty. The next ambition is to plan a European micro tour in the year ahead.

Not resting on their laurels Howling Hawk have already shared their follow-up single Napoleon Road that further cements their place on your ones-to-watch list for 2025. If you like your new music with a retro twist Howling Hawk fits the bill.

Melbourne’s EXILES are leading the indie rock revival with their urgent and elegant debut album ‘Waiting For Romance’.

EXILES – ‘Waiting For Romance’

EXILES first entered our consciousness when they were featured in our article Next Wave. Five Essential New Indie Rock Bands We highlighted ‘Wasting Away’ a track that immediately took us back to the early 2000’s. Do you remember when The Strokes reinvented cool with their arty arrogance and distorted vocal stylings?

EXILES on Spotiify

Twenty years on, EXILES might be leading the next indie rock revival with their own brand of artful indie. ‘Waiting For Romance’ is their debut album and it sounds exciting.

‘Waiting’ is a big theme of the album and you get the distinct impression that the EXILES boys are over it. On track 3 ‘Waiting For You’ there is a mixture of reluctant patience and frustration. By the time we arrive at track 7 ‘Ceiling’ it’s clear all patience has expired. “I ain’t waiting no more, the time is here, the time is now” The message is clear and this refrain is left ringing in your head.

Track 4 ‘Rinse, Repeat’ is about the frustrations of monotony, it’s EXILES’ ‘Is This It’ moment with its laconic and disinterested style, the track provides a moment of calm elegance before the energy returns on ‘Out Of Reach’. This track feels like a pivotal moment and a change in outlook with the lyrics proclaiming “I’m a new man”. This is quickly followed by the swagger of ‘Star’ it’s their ‘Rock n Roll Star’ moment and just like Oasis before them, the question is not if, but when.

https://www.tiktok.com/@exiles_band/video/7429485148858535175?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7376517696424642081
EXILES on TikTok

Produced by Alex Markwell (The Delta Riggs, Portugal The Man), the album is a gritty blend of post-punk energy. This eight-track debut is long enough to build excitement and short enough to leave you wanting more. Markwell was brought on board to capture and translate the energy and unbridled rock’ n roll of the band’s live performances, and he’s undoubtedly succeeded.

“Just try not to find yourself listening to this album on repeat. EXILES are here to stay.”

Fans of The Strokes or Fontaines DC will find much to love here. Do the world a favour and tell a friend about EXILES ‘Waiting For Romance’ this is too good to remain a secret.

After a decade dominated by Pop, and R&B is the stage set for the return of the Indie guitar band? We explore the modern history of the guitar band and shine a spotlight on 5 new bands to watch.

The Birth of Grunge

In the early nineties, guitar bands ruled the airwaves and the charts. Nirvana released Nevermind in 1991, and it felt like the world had changed. The biting intensity and realism of grunge blew away the big-hair soft rock of the eighties. It was urgent, passionate, and real. The popularity of Nirvana opened the floodgates for a host of other guitar bands to be thrust into the limelight, Pixies, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Live, Soundgarden Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Hole to name just a few.

Cool Brittania and Brit Pop

A few years later in 1997, Cool Britannia hit in the UK as Tony Blair’s New Labour swept aside the Tories in an election landslide. There was a new sense of optimism and pride in the United Kingdom and guitar bands once again provided the soundtrack. The charts were dominated by the battle of Britpop with Oasis Blur and Pulp and once again these bands paved the way for others including Ocean Colour Scene, Suede, Supergrass and Elastica.

The Strokes

The third wave was powered by The Strokes. Their oh-so-cool debut ‘Is This It’ released in 2001 paved the way for The White Stripes, Kings of Leon, Hives and Interpol among others. The first two movements were seen as the youth response to periods of high unemployment and economic hardship. The Strokes emerged as the Twin Towers fell and the war on Iraq raged.

The Decline of Bands

Over the past decade, the UK music charts have witnessed a notable decline in the prominence of bands. In the early 1980s, bands occupied the number one spot for 146 weeks, and in the early 1990s, for 141 weeks. However, in the first half of the 2020s, bands have held the top position for only three weeks, with one of those attributed to the AI-fuelled return of The Beatles and another to Little Mix, hardly the cutting-edge new wave indie fans were hoping for.

What’s caused this decline? Record labels have recognised it’s cheaper to sign and develop solo artists. Meanwhile, the grassroots music venues once the incubators of next-wave talent have been shutting down at an alarming rate, reducing the pipeline of new talent. But now in a Post Brexit world, which has witnessed the inexplicable second coming of Trump and the divisive hatred and misogynism of Tate are we primed for the next coming of indie bands, there are some positive signs.

Fontaines D.C. Spark The Revival

In 2019 Fontaines D.C. released their debut Dogrel and we got very excited. This was a noticeable raising of the bar for indie rock. Irish punk contenders Slyrydes threatened to keep the momentum going, but failed to sustain the early hype. When Wunderhorse was formed in 2020 it felt significant. Their debut Cub in 2022 felt wonderfully familiar, the nouveau grunge sound bridged the gap between Nirvana and early Radiohead and things started to get exciting again. They toured with Fontaines D.C. and released their second album Midas in August. Meanwhile, Fontaines shared their third album Romance which further threatened the mainstream.

This time it feels like the Calvary is coming with a plethora of exciting new indie rock bands waiting in the wings. To celebrate the return of indie, we’ve picked out some names to watch and have created a new Indie Rising playlist.

Five essential new bands to watch:

1. Telescreens

New Yorkers’ Telescreens released their debut album 7 in October. The album contains a weighty 16 tracks and feels like a treasure chest of gold. Different enough to maintain interest and cohesive enough to hang together as a collective body of work. It’s powerful, passionate and poetic in equal measure. Opener ‘Times Like These’ wastes no time, it’s a shot in the arm for indie. The intensity continues until track 6 where we are treated to Blue Interlude a moment of poetic reflection. The transition from poetry to album standout ‘Stare’ already feels iconic, this album is significant.

The ramshackle, honky tonk blues of ‘Johnny’ is joyous and heartbreaking in equal measure and the realism bites hard. There is still time for the visceral intensity of Floods and a wonderful reprise of Commotion this time with skittish beats. Make 7 essential listening and be in no doubt, this is the debut of the year.

2. Bby

Bby is an electrifying indie rock band known for their bold sound and unapologetic style. Their debut album, 1, showcases a dynamic mix of gritty guitar riffs, infectious melodies, and introspective lyrics, solidifying their place in the indie music scene. Exploding out of Melbourne, Australia our next band in the spotlight are four-piece EXILES. Their singles “Wasting Away’ recalls the excitement of The Strokes while ‘Get Down’ and ‘Star’ are loaded with a swagger and attitude that is impossible to ignore. This is a band that is already destined for greatness and the journey has barely begun.

In an ambitious move to channel this live energy into their recordings, Exiles teamed up with renowned producer Alex Markwell, known for his work with The Delta Riggs, Portugal The Man, to capture the essence of their sound. Their debut album Waiting For Romance is set for release on December 13th and the anticipation is building at pace.
