Singer-songwriter and producer Emland captures the pain of failed love in his second single, Better off without me.

Emland – Better Off Without Me

Born and raised in Germany and now living in Mallorca, Spain, Emland is a true embodiment of the DIY artist, handling every aspect of his music—writing, arranging, producing, and performing entirely on his own. His passion for music, combined with a wide range of influences, has driven him to experiment from a young age, ultimately shaping his distinct pop-focused sound.

Emland on Spotify

In his teenage years, the piano became more than just an instrument for Emland—it became an emotional outlet during a difficult period, allowing him to channel his feelings and take a fresh approach to music that expanded his creativity in new and diverse directions.

Emland’s talent for crafting pop shines through in his latest track, Better Off Without Me, which draws inspiration from a deeply personal chapter of his life. Reflecting on the meaning behind the song, Emland explains:

Better off without me is a very personal song – a song that I wrote after knowing someone that could have become a very important person in my life, but that ultimately didn’t because of the situation I was going through at that moment. I just had finished a relationship that left me absolutely heartbroken and empty. Now this other person had everything I had ever wished for, but I was just not able to put in the energy that I had to to make that story grow, to make it happen.

Despite the heartache conveyed in the lyrics, the production of this track masterfully blends catchy melodies with raw emotion. Vibrant layers and textures create a deeply emotional soundscape, enhanced by infectious beats and vocal effects. The result is a song that doubles as a summer pop anthem and a thoughtful exploration of a relationship.

“Better off without me excels with its irresistible production and deeply heartfelt songwriting.”

Better Off Without Me is the second single from Emland’s upcoming debut album, EVOLVE, slated for release in the latter half of 2025. Emland describes the album as a concept record that will offer a personal exploration of his views on love.

Canadian country artist Justine Blanchet taps into themes of heartbreak and vulnerability with her second release of 2024, What I Got.

Justine Blanchet – What I Got

Inspired by country legends like Shania Twain, Lady A, and Reba McEntire, Justine Blanchet grew up in the Montreal area, but a visit to Nashville at age 14 would forever alter her path. Two years later, she returned to perform at the iconic Bluebird Café, sparking her dream of moving to Nashville and marking the beginning of her music career.

Justine Blanchet on Spotify

Since her 2017 debut, Justine Blanchet has steadily built a strong reputation in the independent music scene, performing at notable events across Nashville and beyond. These include the Gatlinburg Songwriter’s Festival, Théâtre Gilles-Vigneault, Diamonds in the Rough at Canadian Country Music Week, Big Valley Jamboree, and RBC Bluesfest. Her growing success is reflected in her impressive streaming numbers, with over 1 million combined Spotify streams and YouTube views. Additionally, she was recently honoured as part of CBC Music’s Searchlight 2024 Elite 50.

Driven by a personal experience that led to a difficult yet unavoidable realization, Justine Blanchet’s new track *What I Got* delivers an impactful pop-country melody with a deeply relatable message. Elaborating on the song’s meaning, Justine explains:

This song was inspired by a challenging relationship that ended with a lot of heartbreak. As I wrote it, I caught myself thinking about how his next relationship would compare with ours, leading to a lot of inner conflict about the sombre reality of what had happened between us and how I should feel about the future. At its core, ‘What I Got’ is about accepting exactly what you got from your own relationship – without illusions – and moving on.

Justine blends typical country instrumentation with modern pop production. Her passionate vocal performance shines through pulling listeners right into the heart of this emotional track. With lively guitar and banjo accents, What I Got is guaranteed to evoke a strong emotional response. Justine has released a music video that pairs striking visuals with the heartfelt themes of the song.

“What I Got is a charming pop-country composition that masterfully combines heartfelt storytelling with exceptional production quality.”

Justine has scheduled several live performances to promote this latest release. She will be making her fourth appearance at the Diamonds in the Rough showcase during Canadian Country Music Week on September 13th, 2024.

Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist Morgan Paros returns with a new single What Love Is.

Morgan Paros – What Love Is

Morgan has already amassed thousands of streams with well-rounded singles like Last Straw, Twist The Knife, and There I Go Again.

Along the way, she’s picked up praise from music blogs including Buzzbands.la and of course, Right Chord Music, toured with pop artist Ashe and recorded and arranged strings for Shawn Mendes, Madison Beer, and Ricky Montgomery.

Thematically speaking, Morgan has always succeeded at recreating the many mysteries of the human experience through her singular vision. Such is the case for her new offering, What Love Is, a piece that is very self-explanatory in its title, depicting what it meant for this artist to get married and subsequently get divorced at a young age and figure out what love truly is the hard way.

And without getting into spoiler territory, the ending of this melody denotes Morgan’s outstanding songwriting skills, delivering a twist in these lyrics that you won’t see coming.

Despite its sour topic, this composition creates an exciting contrast thanks to its upbeat instrumentation and Morgan’s sugary voice, balancing uncertainty with catchiness in the most enticing way possible.

What Love Is is a passionate and engaging pop experience, magnificently taking us on a voyage through the bittersweet side of love.

Morgan Paros keeps showing glimpses of maturity with every release, never shying away from being as sincere as she can be, with her lyrical work coming as confessionary and highly reflective. This work might be poignant, but it is a much more genuine feeling than blind optimism or hope ever could, and it is that kind of sheer bluntness that makes her such a compelling musician.

Described as many things, including a ‘band voluntarily descending into madness’ and ‘the sound of an existential crisis, unfolding externally’, Major Ouf is anything but an ordinary band. Their eccentricities grant them a peculiar style you won’t find very often, but that is definitely present in their second single, Godsend.

Major Ouf – Godsend

Comprised of five Norwegian ex-music students, Major Ouf is here to accomplish their goals of crafting quality pop music and putting a smile on their audience, always with their characteristic sense of humour.

After releasing their debut track, 2close4comfort, the band wanted to take a slightly different approach for their sophomore single. Here is when Godsend comes into play, a tune that forced them to get out of their comfort zone while also allowing them to expand their skill set in favour of a new and rich aural route.

Production-wise, this song has a special appeal. In an almost hypnotic way, lead singer Marie’s vocals are sweet and warm, evoking a dream-like vibe, perfectly matching the thick and colourful textures within this composition. All these elements combined create an atmosphere that we could only describe as adorably trippy, just like the artwork of this piece.

As far as the lyrics go, Godsend talks about making a connection so strong and meaningful with someone that you start wondering if you’re worth it or if this seemingly perfect relationship is even real. This theme complements the hallucinating instrumentation incredibly well.

Godsend is an exquisite pop track, dazzlingly surreal and enjoyable.

From their presentation to the outstanding amount of effort put into their sound, Major Ouf knows how to catch one’s attention, and with an upcoming EP in the near future, you can expect more quality tracks like this one sooner than later.

Born in the Rhondda with strong Gibraltarian roots, Caitlin Lavagna’s passion for singing and rhythm has been nurtured since childhood.

Inspired by a wide range of reggae, pop and indie-rock flavours, Lavagna cites Sting, Fleetwood Mac, Florence, Haim and Biffy Clyro to be among her main influences. Further inspired by classical music and musical theatre, her deep knowledge of music correlates perfectly with her honest songwriting and rhythm-driven foundations. Whether it’s sharing the bill with fellow artists or jumping onstage to act, sing or dance, Lavagna will always bring the fiesta.

Her first single of the year, ‘We Lost Track’ is a captivating single by the solo-artist. Featuring heavenly harmonies, a melancholic string and a piano duo with the perfect sprinkle of percussion, the song will transport you to new heights. Upon first listening, the song will have you completely mesmerized, and quickly singing the refrain from the rooftops. Lavagna’s clear, passionate vocals give the track an incredibly rich, universal, yet intimate quality, as though the singer and listener are decades-old friends.

Her first ballad, Lavagna gave us an exclusive insight into the track:

“This is my first ballad and I’m so proud of it. I wanted the song to represent losing something “perfect”. It’s a reflective song about how I gave too much of myself to someone and didn’t see my worth. It’s about me realising I was worth more than how I was treated. It’s about friendship, love and loss. I hope people connect to the song whilst enjoying its subtle but rhythmic shifts and euphoric string arrangements. I have challenged myself and I think the track is beautiful. I am so excited to see the work of myself and my friends (some of whom I met touring the UK with Fisherman’s Friends the Musical) come to life. They’re incredible musicians and close friends who have absolutely nailed it”.

Admitting that she finds songwriting her most difficult practice to develop, the song was written in collaboration with songwriter and friend Joe Rodwell, whose guidance and support strengthened Lavagna’s trust in herself. Mutually understanding how they wanted to bring the story to life, the virtual collaboration exquisitely combined the skill of both individuals to craft a poignant, enchanting single.

“We Lost Track” is the perfect pop ballad. With gorgeous instrumentation and heartfelt vocals, Caitlin Lavagna, in collaboration with Joe Rodwell,  has truly created something special. Well-paced to keep you invested from start to finish, you will be left wanting to hear much more from this talented artist”.

Morgan Paros is no stranger to the chaos that seems ever-present in the world today. There’s an abundance of problems and a shortage of solutions.

Morgan Paros – Last Straw

On her debut single, ‘Last Straw,’ Paros isn’t asking us to ignore these issues. Rather, she challenges us to find peace by creating our own meaning within turmoil. Paros wants us to keep asking questions — and find inner strength by acknowledging we won’t always have the right answer.

For the last ten years, Paros made a name for herself as a touring multi-instrumentalist and recording artist. Though she’s based in Los Angeles, she’s recently been touring the world with electropop artist Ashe, and has arranged strings for the likes of Shawn Mendes, Madison Beer, and Lauv.

But now, with the release of ‘Last Straw,’ Paros is stepping into the spotlight as a solo artist. ‘Last Straw’ is both energetic and thoughtful, with Paros’s silky voice and upbeat energy bringing to mind indie pop heavyweights such as Caroline Polachek and Rina Sawayama. The track was inspired by both her private love life and love of performance, with honest lyrics that speak to the questions of her generation.

This song is about finding refuge in yourself despite the chaos or chatter around you, having the courage to live alongside questioning,” Paros says of the track. “It’s about centring on what lights you up in a world where there might not be any light posts to guide you.”

Paros produced the track alongside her long-time partner Jeremy Hatcher, a 3x Grammy award-winning producer known for his work with Harry Styles, Lizzo, and Maggie Rogers, among others. The pair first began writing and recording songs together while Paros was in between touring.

‘Last Straw’ is a certified earworm, and the upbeat tune comes just in time for the warm, sunny comfort of the summer months. We might never have the answers for the difficult questions that are facing us right now, and that’s okay — ‘Last Straw’ reminds us that sometimes, wondering is the whole point.

“With the release of ‘Last Straw,’ Paros is stepping into the spotlight as a solo artist. ‘Last Straw’ is both energetic and thoughtful, with Paros’ silky voice and upbeat energy bringing to mind indie pop heavyweights such as Caroline Polachek and Rina Sawayama.”

What do you think of when you hear the phrase ‘roll over’? Are you old school and reminded of ‘Roll Over, Beethoven’, or do you start dreaming of a lottery win? Whatever you think of, Avi Kytes brings a more intimate take on the phrase, with a plea to a lover to let things relax.

Avi Kytes – ‘Roll Over’

Avi Kytes is the project of London-based singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Alex Rigueiro. Having previously worked on other projects, this track marks his first release as Avi Kytes.

‘Roll Over’ is a highly accessible pop-RnB groove, combining relationship doubts with a summery feel.

The lyrics are conversational, yet show personality, with the main hook ‘Roll over, I’m getting tired of this side of your shoulder’, providing some strong imagery. They express the insecurities that normally arise in relationships, and a desire to just let things flow – ‘for a while I was in my head…we don’t need to say much.’ The melodies are effortless, and stylish yet delivered with ease. Rigueiro’s vocals are also highly listenable, sensitive and smooth.

The production centres around rhythmic guitar lines, layered with plenty of reverb, and stripped-back percussion – perhaps a nod to Rigueiro’s Spanish heritage. The track builds into a solid groove with hand claps and sprinkles of synths, and even a brass line, which avoids being too intrusive and keeps it summery. There are influences of RnB hitmakers like The Weeknd and Justin Bieber here, making it a track that goes down very easily. A strong debut for Avi Kytes.

Amelia serves up some joyous synth-pop on ‘Free’

Amelia – Free

‘Winging it, it’s worked out pretty well so far’, sings one of the lines of Amelia’s ‘Free’. Although this is a song dedicated to finding out who you are in your 20s, there’s a feeling that many can relate to. Because here’s the secret – you never truly figure out, and we’re all just winging it, and hey, hopefully, it’s worked out well so far.

Amelia is a Liverpudlian singer-songwriter who started releasing in earnest last year. Building up a catalogue, she has been featured on BBC Introducing as well as other radio and blog slots.

‘Free’ is a light piece of synth-based pop that evokes the confusion and self-discovery of youth.

‘21 and you’re thinking what have I done so far’ go the opening lines, no doubt evoking hollow laughter from the over 30s in the audience. But the lyrics do capture the naive confusion of that time, noting ‘10 year old me thought I’d be in New York City by now’ and there are some strong lyrics like ‘run ‘til you find somebody to be’. It’s all delivered in familiar pop melodies but heightened by Amelia’s gutsy vocals, which are the highlight of the track.

The production is heavily 80s influenced, with swooping synths, punchy beats and breathy backing vocals. There are definitely influences of modern 80s-inspired artists like Taylor Swift in there, but it feels quite retro,  a sound that wouldn’t be out of place in an early Kylie or Stock Aitken & Waterman record. There are some unexpected discordant moments in the chorus, but for the most part, this is an easily relatable and lighthearted track with a sweet lyrical point of view.
