Copenhagen’s own Mirby makes her mark with her debut EP ‘Like This’, which contrasts sadness with uplifting energy.

Mirby – Like This

Emerging from Copenhagen, Denmark, Mirby is an exciting artist who has discovered her voice through a fusion of R&B, pop, and funk, woven together with alternative arrangements. Her debut EP Like This is deeply significant—not only as her first official release but also as a personal milestone. The project was shaped by joy and tragedy, as Mirby lost her father during the creative process, a loss that left an undeniable imprint on the work.

Even with that weight, Like This delivers plenty of memorable moments. Across its five songs, the EP moves between carefree grooves and thoughtful reflections. The title track, Like This, sets the tone with a fun, beat-driven pop explosion, carried by Mirby’s bold and confident vocal delivery. Although brief, it serves as an unforgettable opener.

The second track, Biosphere, explores one of the most profound themes on the EP. Inspired by her late father’s philosophy, the song reflects his belief that humanity can become the consciousness of the earth only by uniting and caring for it. This message is wrapped in chilled, atmospheric production that gives the track a meditative, spiritual aura while encouraging deeper thought on such an important subject.

On What is Sexy? Mirby takes a direct stand against harmful stereotypes tied to beauty, questioning and confronting shallow perceptions. The track lands a sharp blow to patriarchal ideals through smooth, alluring R&B production, balancing its critical message with engaging, carefully crafted melodies.

Almost Getting There offers a shift toward inspiration. In it, Mirby encourages listeners to keep dreaming and pushing forward, even in the face of anxiety and society’s constant judgment. The funky rhythms and irresistible instrumentation turn the track into one of the most upbeat and motivating highlights of the project.

To close the EP, Gone stands as Mirby’s most heartfelt and vulnerable track so far. Stripped down to an acoustic ballad, it is a tribute to her father, filled with raw emotion and honest lyricism. Loneliness and longing are at the core of the song, giving the EP a striking and emotional conclusion.

“Like This is a true success, filled with heartfelt lyricism and versatile production. It highlights Mirby’s artistry in every way and is an EP that listeners should not overlook.”

Beyond the music itself, Mirby represents the growing importance of the DIY approach. She not only directs and edits her own videos but also recorded the EP alongside producer Valdemar Littauer Bendixen, adding even more credibility to her craft. With Like This, Mirby proves she is an emerging musician with something genuine to say and the talent to back it up.

UK-born singer-songwriter Yeija introduces herself with her emotionally charged debut single, Spell On You. This powerful track showcases her fearless songwriting and raw vulnerability.

Yeija – Spell On You

Yeija (pronounced Yaysia) is a UK-born, half-Japanese singer currently living in Germany. Often feeling caught between different cultures, she turned to music as a safe haven, a place where she could fully express her emotions without restriction. Her sound is a diverse blend of R&B, EDM, and pop, serving as the perfect vehicle for her emotive lyrics, honest storytelling, and fearless approach to self-expression.

For her debut single, Spell On You, Yeija presents a deeply personal story that showcases her raw and soulful lyricism. The track reflects on a past relationship where she hoped to support and encourage positive change in her partner. Unfortunately, the situation grew increasingly painful, leading to hurt, frustration, and betrayal. Ultimately, the song conveys the powerful message that while believing in love is important, it’s also okay to recognise when it’s time to walk away.

From a production standpoint, this track stands out with its dynamic mix and captivating backing vocals. It also highlights Yeija’s vocal abilities, making Spell On You a strong and compelling introduction to the talent and artistry of this emerging singer.

Just as exciting as this new single, Yeija is also gearing up to release her debut EP, Devil’s Room. This conceptual eight-track project explores themes of heartbreak, self-destruction, and healing, with each song representing a different stage of this emotional journey. Through her music, Yeija captures both the turmoil of pain and the resilience found in closure. Her story is only beginning, so keep a close eye on this rising artist.

Toronto-based artist, Caldher releases his sophomore EP Momentary and urges us to stay present.

Caldher – Momentary

Caldher is carving out his path in the industry with his distinct brand of indie songwriting. Having grown up in a musical environment, he has always been fascinated by different expressions of sound and it’s this love for musical diversity that fuels his passion for music.

Chalder’s music is a captivating cocktail of melancholic lyrics, alt-rock, R&B and jazz inflexions. After nearly two years in the making, Momentary delivers an atmospheric, gritty and expansive soundscape that perfectly carries his sincere vocals. This EP serves as a reminder that life is a web of pain and pleasure, that everything you are feeling will pass eventually and sometimes all we can do is stay present in the moment as much as possible.

Kicking the EP off is ‘Thursday Mess’, an upbeat track with poignant lyrics. It explores the feelings that come with falling in love with someone who doesn’t love you back or have the same relationship goals as you. Despite this, you always end up going back to them and offering them your support whenever it is needed because of your attachment to them. With compelling guitar melodies, dreamy vocals and four on-the-floor drumming, this song will have you up and dancing.

‘Make You Stay’ will have you tapping your foot and nodding your head as you listen along. The energetic instrumentation is quite a contrast to the melancholic lyrics. This track tells a touching tale of a romantic encounter that has happened after a couple of drinks and the questioning that comes along with it of whether it is real feelings or just a result of the effect of the alcohol. Despite this, the writer wants to remain present in the moment in case it doesn’t go any further than that night and just enjoy the person’s presence. This tune is sure to get stuck in your head with the catchy hook “And I’ll keep you in my arms today.”

Unlike the last two tracks on the ‘Momentary’ EP, ‘Not Enough’ is a softer, ballad-type tune with soft lilting piano melodies and lyrics that will be sure to tug on your heartstrings. It dives into the emotions experienced when you start to notice that a relationship is coming to an end and the way that you try to cling to the good moments to give yourself some hope that it will work out eventually. ‘Not enough’ is a song that is sure to bring a tear to your eye as we have all experienced being in a position where we give our everything to someone and they end up walking away. The lyrics are eloquently written by Caldher, painting a vivid picture for the listeners.

‘Constellations’, is a slower track that has a low-fi/indie-pop feel to it. Starting off with just piano before being joined by guitar, synthesizers, drums and bass, the instrumentation is perfectly arranged to compliment and highlight Caldher’s lyrics and the story that he is portraying. This song explores the moment that you realize you are starting to fall for someone and the fear that comes along with it. The lyrics accurately capture the questioning that comes with realizing your feelings for someone and wondering what this means; wondering if this will result in you having your heartbroken or having the connection deepen between you and having it all work out in the end.

Similar to ‘Not Enough’, ‘Eclipse’ is a ballad-styled track with the instrumentation being focussed mostly around the piano at the start, with the feint playing of guitar and bass in the background. Further in the song the arrangement changes to something slightly heavier as a distorted guitar solo becomes front and centre, really changing the energy of the song and adding an interesting dynamic to it. As the song starts to come to a close during the last 40 seconds, the arrangement melts back into the softer, ballad-style sound that we hear at the beginning of the track. This is one of the heavier songs on the Ep, approaching the topic of not being able to manage grief and losing a loved one. The heart-breaking lyrics paint a picture for the listener on how the writer would do anything he could to keep his loved one alive because he knows that once they leave, the heartbreak and agony that comes along with it will not end.

‘Passerby’ is a raw and emotional track, with the recording being slightly rougher than the rest of the tracks on the album to really let the soul of it bleed through. The piano melody is nostalgic and comforting while still tugging on your heart and making you shed a tear. This haunting tune touches on the writer dreaming about the one that he loves every night and how he hates how that person slips away when the morning comes. He dreams of a day where the one he loves is no longer just a part of his dreams, but instead, the one he gets to wake up next to every morning.

‘Momentary’ is an emotional rollercoaster that is incredibly cathartic for listeners. With the mix of poignant lyrics and versatile instrumentation, Caldher has successfully created a world that listeners can get immersed in.

‘Insecure’ is the emphatic new single from Kiyah Kaélis. The R&B newcomer brings her brand of enchanting harmonies and gritty beats once again.

Kiyah Kaélis – Insecure

Hailing from Spartanburg, South Carolina, Kaélis has already made a name for herself as one of R&B’s most exciting newcomers with the release of her first two singles. ‘Insecure’ sees Kiyah embracing a more emphatic relationship with her music, authentically exploring her experiences and emotions as a woman.

The record starts with a slick chord progression that soon unfolds into a sweeping effort. Right from the outset, the single exudes a cool sense of class and finesse, with Kiyah’s mesmerizing delivery bearing a passing resemblance to SZA or Doja Cat.

The cool rhythms and emotive changes encapsulate that no holds barred approach that Kaélis has taken on this release. The way that Kaélis holds herself on this recording is both as intoxicating as it is entrancing, paving way for her vocal riffs to stand out as a compelling showcase of her talent. As sensational as it is, ‘Insecure’ is an extremely catchy song.

One of my favourite elements of the track is the production and the beat that carries the track through its humble duration of two minutes and twenty-six seconds. It could have been quite easy for Kaélis to employ a simple, lo-fi production style and let her radiant voice do all the talking, yet by opting for something more creatively interesting, she evokes a more exhilarating reality.

The beat reminds me of the powerful, gritty percussion of hip hop whilst still maintaining the soulful clarity that is characteristic of R&B. ‘Insecure’s hard-edged snare and synthesizers compliment the beauty of Kiyah’s natural ability perfectly pave the way for ‘Insecure’ to feel distinctive and individual.

Insecure’ is an authentic and gripping effort that is as empowering as it is defiant, cementing Kiyah Kaélis as one of R&B’s rising stars.

UK rapper Hazl, along with his longtime collaborator and friend T-Millzy, has dropped a hot new summer track titled Plus 1. This release showcases Hazl’s love for 90s hip-hop and R&B, bringing a fresh yet nostalgic vibe to the music scene.

Hazl, T-Millzy ‘Plus 1’

Hailing from West London and Southampton, Hazl and T-Millzy have been best friends since their college days. Their chemistry as collaborators is evident, and they are passionate about sharing their distinctive sound, which blends 90s hip-hop with a classic club bounce. This distinct style is something they feel has been missing from the UK music scene, and they are eager to revive it.

Getting ready for summer, this dynamic duo has released a perfectly timed track, Plus 1. The song draws its initial inspiration from the thrill of attending a party with friends, amplified by the excitement of bringing along someone you’re dating. However, the track evolved into a narrative where Hazl and T-Millzy host a party, with Hazl and his girl turning up the heat as the night goes on.

In terms of lyrics, Hazl cleverly employs the phrase Plus 1 to create intriguing wordplay and homophones. This adds depth to what may seem like a simple expression, with varied interpretations woven throughout the track.

As previously mentioned, while this piece is notably influenced by 90s hip-hop, what sets it apart is the infusion of R&B. Hazl’s melodious and infectious vocals, combined with T-Millzy’s cutting-edge rhymes, create a dynamic synergy between the two artists. Coupled with captivating production featuring hazy vocal effects and irresistible beats, the result is a mesmerizing jam tailor-made for the summer.

“Plus 1 exemplifies finely crafted hip-hop, boasting an impeccable flow and clever rhyme patterns.”

In addition to the single, Hazl and T-Millzy will release a music video on May 30th, capturing the vibrant essence of this refreshing track. Don’t miss out—join them for an unforgettable party experience!

Tyriek Clement – ‘Flying Away’

‘It’s crazy that we’re strangers now’, remarks the opening verse of Tyriek Clement’s ‘Flying Away’. Yes, we’re in classic RnB ballad territory here – pining over a lost love, but Clement brings a youthful earnestness that makes it all ring true again.

Tyriek Clement is a Hackney-bred R&B and soul singer. With a handful of singles released, he’s opening 2024 with a classic heartbreak, she’s-better-off-without-me track.

‘Flying Away’ is a stripped-back R&B love song, with a pure sound and a heart on its sleeve.

The youthful lyrics detail seeing an ex again – ‘you seem like you’re in a better place’ – and all the regrets that come flooding back. There are some moments of maturer introspection with lines like ‘my first love was never gonna be my best love’ and ‘I couldn’t bring myself to say goodbye to your face’, but the soaring chorus is all angst, wailing ‘she’s flying away, she’s going to a better place’. The chorus melody is memorable and classic, while the verses are more pacey and modern-influenced. Clement’s fresh vocals take centre stage, showing commitment and flexibility – I only wish there was less autotune so I could hear his accomplished voice better.

The minimal production focuses on the vocals and the ringing, reverberating piano, with some touches of backing vocals. While nothing groundbreaking, there’s an undeniable sincerity to it. Artists like John Legend and Usher come to mind, so anyone looking for a soulful tearjerker to scream-sing along to should give this one a go.
