Bristol-based music artist, Chrissie Huntley, is one to watch. Her latest single, Supposed to Be, radiates bold and emotive energy that will leave you feeling both moved and completely wonderstruck. The lyricism is beautiful; Huntley’s voice even more so.

Chrissie Huntley – Supposed to Be

Before the lockdown of 2020, Huntley had been making huge strides in her fledgeling career, having headlined the O2 Academy Bristol, performed twice on BBC 1’s Regional News Show, performed at the UK House of Commons (in aid of National Grief Awareness Week), and had been chosen to play at Glastonbury.

However, with the pandemic throwing a spanner in the works, Huntley utilised the extra time provided by national lockdowns to her advantage. Over the past year, Huntley has collaborated with musicians across the globe and transformed her closet into a home studio. Supposed to Be is the first of many tracks set for release this year and is one that Huntley holds close to her heart. Speaking more about her latest single, Huntley has said:

Supposed to Be is one of the first songs I ever wrote when I was a teenager, and I just got dumped by the guy who I thought was supposed to be “the one”. I think we’ve all been in that position where you know that it’s over, but you just want to hold on and pretend just a little while longer…”

Kintsuku – Enough

Kintsuku’s unique style has previously been described as “ethereal-punk” as she blends dark electronic pop with dreamy, soul-stirring vocals. Her incredible voice has landed her a number one spot in the Beatport charts, featuring her distinctive and emotive topline vocal on the re-work of the classic track Touch Me by Rui Da Silva.

As for many artists, the Covid-19 pandemic sadly cut short Kintsuku’s passion for live performance. Nonetheless, she took to live-streaming her music on Twitch, and in just under a year gained Twitch Partner verification and a loyal fanbase. Kintsuku’s success shows no signs of slowing down as her audience continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. She is now focusing her energy on the creation of her debut album, which will feature an exciting collaboration with Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park.

Kintsuku’s latest single, Enough, is moving, vulnerable, and completely compelling as it explores the connection with one’s younger self. The lyrics are raw, and Kintsuku’s voice will send tingles running down your spine. If you’re having a bad day, Enough will be sure to put a smile on your face.

L’auntre is the debut single by Stockholm-based band The Mermaids. Fresh, smooth, and shimmering; this brilliant track will have you thinking of warm days and new horizons as it promotes and explores the bliss of personal freedom and adventures. The Mermaids’ distinctive sound will fill your mind up with inspiration and creativity.

The Mermaids – L’auntre

The Mermaids borrow their name from a popular live music bar in the Tokyo Bay Area. The bar was famous for its Wednesday act “The Mermaids”, an art collective with an interchangeable set of members who would do adult performance art in exchange for food and drinks. However, after a period of rivalry with the neighbouring Yakuza clan, the Hathoru-Guccis, both The Mermaids and well-respected bar owner, Brent, disappeared.

The band recounted that the disappearance of Brent and the famous The Mermaids bar was a big blow to the cultural scene of the Tokyo Bay Area. After an initial period of vowing never to perform ever again, the band soon realised their need for music and live performance. Ever since The Mermaids have been working hard at creating new and brilliant sounds. Lucky, because otherwise, we wouldn’t get to experience the glimmering sensation that is L’auntre. We can’t wait to hear more of The Mermaids’ incredible work.

BUEL’s latest release is a cover of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit that serves as a demonstration of her unique and innovative style.

BUEL’s Smells Like Teen Spirit

Despite Smells Like Teen Spirit being a widely covered track, BUEL’s cover is fresh, and outstanding in its own right. Her voice is breathtaking, chilling, and enticing. This cover isn’t one you’ll want to miss.

About BUEL

BUEL is a multi-talented artist based in Los Angeles. She began singing her own melodies when she was just four years of age, soon going on to write and arrange her own compositions.

At twelve, BUEL made her first public appearance, playing piano and then singing as a member in her school band. Around the same time, she also began to write short stories, poems and essays that were published by her school’s magazines as well as local newspapers. Her experience with writing would go on to become the source of some of her cryptic lyrics.

At 15, BUEL taught herself how to play guitar, focussing on her solo career, and drawing inspiration for her music from icons such Nirvana, Meredith Monk, Yoko Ono, Morphine, Mazzy Star, and Kate Bush. However, Buel’s sound is distinct and very much her own. Her musical work is both effortless and flawless.

Shayla McDaniel’s newest release Let Me Breathe (How to Break Our Hearts) is an emotive and empowering track, prompting the listener to reflect on whether a relationship is challenging but healthy, or unnecessarily difficult.

McDaniel’s gorgeous vocals will send tingles down your spine as you’re guided through a reality of love, pain, and suffering. McDaniel imbeds an important message within the song, reminding the listener to care for themselves as well as caring for others.

Speaking about her inspiration for the song, McDaniel has said: “This song was inspired by a relationship that wasn’t good for either of us. Neither of us truly wanted to be there, but we stuck around because it was what we had grown used to.”

Shayla McDaniel is a Knoxville, Tennessee based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She has performed at Rhythm N’ Blooms Music Festival, Waynestock, the Cre865 Showcase, Women in Jazz Jam Festival, and live on-air at WUTK 90.3 FM, WDVX 89.9 FM, and WOZO 103.9 FM. Cosima Bellamacina’s latest song, Way Too Deep, packs a powerful punch, telling the story of a woman possessed by her demons.

Cosima Bellamacina Way Too Deep

The track is full of heavy imagery and hauntingly vulnerable lyricism. Cosima’s vocals guide the listener through the terrifying experience of being trapped inside one’s own head.

Speaking more on her track, Cosima has said: ‘I wanted to show the rawness of what it’s like to be depressed and live in a life of sadness. It’s so real, and this song is devoted to the point that if we stay negative, nothing will ever happen to us. Being way too deep in thought constantly is a living nightmare, and that the woman in the song drags everyone around her down. A woman functioning without any kind of magic in her life, she’s all alone, but ultimately she does it to herself.”

About Cosima Bellamacina

Cosima Bellamacina is a singer-songwriter, born and raised in North London. She trained in singing, acting, and dance at the Sylvia Young Theatre School and Italia Conti. She then attended The London School of Speech and Drama, and The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, later appearing in two Harry Potter films and working within the modelling industry. Despite her acting and modelling success, Cosima has continued to nurture her love for music, and performed her song Your Love Saved Me for the UK feature film Hurt by Paradise.

Based in New York City, MayQueen is a brand new all-female indie rock trio, with a vibrant and effortless energy that is reminiscent of iconic sounds of the 1970s and ‘80s.

MayQueen – Worst Nightmare

MayQueen’s founder, Natasha Recoder, began writing music on her guitar with friends virtually, during the lockdown of 2020. Although Recoder works in neuroscience research, she found time to teach herself how to compose and record music. Lucy Horgan and Ariana Bowe of Spud Cannon joined Recoder soon after, forming MayQueen. The trio draw inspiration from the likes of Blondie, David Bowie, and The Velvet Underground.

The lyrics for the trio’s debut single, Worst Nightmare, was originally written as a poem by Marjolyn Megaloudis, a friend of the band’s. Recoder took inspiration from the poem, transforming it into a song. She originally wrote and recorded each instrument herself.

As Covid-19 restrictions eased, MayQueen were able to re-record their respective parts to create the final version of Worst Nightmare. The track has a unique sound, combining sleepy melodies with wilder bursts of vivacity. There’s an enigmatic energy about this track, with its beautifully written lyrics and whispery vocalisation that completely captivates the listener. Worst Nightmare would be the perfect anthem for a road trip to someplace new.

Andrew Patterson is a Belfast-based singer-songwriter who has been releasing music, and gigging regularly in Dublin and Belfast, for the past five years. He returns with new single ‘Normal People’

Andrew Patterson – Normal People

Patterson’s latest single, Normal People, makes spring feel that little bit closer. It is fun, refreshing and packed full of hope. The folk-pop track features strummed guitars and thoughtful lyrics that you’ll want to sing out loud. Patterson has already been playing Normal People in his solo set over the past year, and in July, he was able to get into the studio to capture the track at its best.

The track borrows its name from Sally Rooney’s second novel, and the recent television adaption, which instantly captivated and inspired Patterson with its theme of belonging. Speaking more on his incredible song, and the inspiration behind it, Patterson has said: “The song is a call to the struggle in each of us to fit in despite all of our quirks and insecurities. The realisation becomes that really, no one is truly normal, and everyone is searching for the same sense of belonging.”

Four years ago, singer/songwriter, Lena Minder, packed up her life in Zurich, Switzerland and moved to Berlin. Since then, she has focussed more on producing, creating new sounds, and establishing herself as a solo artist.

Lena Minder Stay Around

Lena’s debut single, Stay Around, is beautifully heart-rending, laced with effortless vocal effects, and rich harmonies. Although simple and understated, the song’s lyrics are packed full of poignant and vivid imagery that tugs at your emotions. The accompanying video to the track is equally emotive and captivating, featuring abandoned buildings, white venetian volto masks, and Lena in an ethereal, white dress that serves as the perfect symbol for her divinely angelic voice.

Stay Around was recorded alongside Cameron Laing at The Famous Gold Watch studios in Berlin, and is reminiscent of some of Lena’s best-loved artists, most particularly Feist and The Staves. The song was written just before Lena decided to make the move back to Switzerland in March 2020, knowing that she would miss what she was leaving behind in Berlin. But, the pandemic hit soon after, and kept her in the German capital anyway.

Stay Around is a tender, compelling, and completely gorgeous track that you’d struggle to only listen to once. We can’t wait to hear more from Lena.
