In Athens – ‘Or Anything’

In Athens boasts an array of musical backgrounds and emits a self-proclaimed unique sound. They stay true to this vision on ‘Or anything’. Mystic guitars blend with cascading drums and send us into a new realm. Everything about this sound is fresh and raw. In Athens have intentionally crafted this song to be different and new, and in doing so have opened the door to a new world. 

The vocals are transcendent and glide across the track, in between and outside the hazy mesh of hypnotic sounds. The lyrics paint the picture of human existentialism and collide perfectly with the instrumentals to cascade the listener into a real-life lucid dream. Post the second chorus, the vocal riffs are majestic, and the guitar solos clash with the song in a way I can’t remember ever experiencing before. One final chorus closes the song and forces us further into the unknown. 

’Or Anything’ by In Athens is so new and bold that I dare say music may have found a new path. Reminiscent of all the best alternative music of the past, but in its own lane completely. ‘Or Anything’ is their debut single from their upcoming EP ‘MIRRORISM’, and I, for one, cannot wait for more music from In Athens.

The Birth of Grunge

In the early nineties, guitar bands ruled the airwaves and the charts. Nirvana released Nevermind in 1991, and it felt like the world had changed. The biting intensity and realism of grunge blew away the big-hair soft rock of the eighties. It was urgent, passionate, and real. The popularity of Nirvana opened the floodgates for a host of other guitar bands to be thrust into the limelight, Pixies, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Live, Soundgarden Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Hole to name just a few.

Cool Brittania and Brit Pop

A few years later in 1997, Cool Britannia hit in the UK as Tony Blair’s New Labour swept aside the Tories in an election landslide. There was a new sense of optimism and pride in the United Kingdom and guitar bands once again provided the soundtrack. The charts were dominated by the battle of Britpop with Oasis Blur and Pulp and once again these bands paved the way for others including Ocean Colour Scene, Suede, Supergrass and Elastica.

The Strokes

The third wave was powered by The Strokes. Their oh-so-cool debut ‘Is This It’ released in 2001 paved the way for The White Stripes, Kings of Leon, Hives and Interpol among others. The first two movements were seen as the youth response to periods of high unemployment and economic hardship. The Strokes emerged as the Twin Towers fell and the war on Iraq raged.

The Decline of Bands

Over the past decade, the UK music charts have witnessed a notable decline in the prominence of bands. In the early 1980s, bands occupied the number one spot for 146 weeks, and in the early 1990s, for 141 weeks. However, in the first half of the 2020s, bands have held the top position for only three weeks, with one of those attributed to the AI-fuelled return of The Beatles and another to Little Mix, hardly the cutting-edge new wave indie fans were hoping for.

What’s caused this decline? Record labels have recognised it’s cheaper to sign and develop solo artists. Meanwhile, the grassroots music venues once the incubators of next-wave talent have been shutting down at an alarming rate, reducing the pipeline of new talent. But now in a Post Brexit world, which has witnessed the inexplicable second coming of Trump and the divisive hatred and misogynism of Tate are we primed for the next coming of indie bands, there are some positive signs.

Fontaines D.C. Spark The Revival

In 2019 Fontaines D.C. released their debut Dogrel and we got very excited. This was a noticeable raising of the bar for indie rock. Irish punk contenders Slyrydes threatened to keep the momentum going, but failed to sustain the early hype. When Wunderhorse was formed in 2020 it felt significant. Their debut Cub in 2022 felt wonderfully familiar, the nouveau grunge sound bridged the gap between Nirvana and early Radiohead and things started to get exciting again. They toured with Fontaines D.C. and released their second album Midas in August. Meanwhile, Fontaines shared their third album Romance which further threatened the mainstream.

This time it feels like the Calvary is coming with a plethora of exciting new indie rock bands waiting in the wings. To celebrate the return of indie, we’ve picked out some names to watch and have created a new Indie Rising playlist.

Five essential new bands to watch:

1. Telescreens

New Yorkers’ Telescreens released their debut album 7 in October. The album contains a weighty 16 tracks and feels like a treasure chest of gold. Different enough to maintain interest and cohesive enough to hang together as a collective body of work. It’s powerful, passionate and poetic in equal measure. Opener ‘Times Like These’ wastes no time, it’s a shot in the arm for indie. The intensity continues until track 6 where we are treated to Blue Interlude a moment of poetic reflection. The transition from poetry to album standout ‘Stare’ already feels iconic, this album is significant.

The ramshackle, honky tonk blues of ‘Johnny’ is joyous and heartbreaking in equal measure and the realism bites hard. There is still time for the visceral intensity of Floods and a wonderful reprise of Commotion this time with skittish beats. Make 7 essential listening and be in no doubt, this is the debut of the year.

2. Bby

Bby is an electrifying indie rock band known for their bold sound and unapologetic style. Their debut album, 1, showcases a dynamic mix of gritty guitar riffs, infectious melodies, and introspective lyrics, solidifying their place in the indie music scene. The standout single, Kinky, has become a fan favourite, celebrated for its edgy, danceable rhythm and provocative energy. Renowned for their raw and captivating live performances, Bby continues to push creative boundaries.

3. Exiles

Exploding out of Melbourne, Australia our next band in the spotlight are four-piece EXILES. Their singles “Wasting Away’ recalls the excitement of The Strokes while ‘Get Down’ and ‘Star’ are loaded with a swagger and attitude that is impossible to ignore. This is a band that is already destined for greatness and the journey has barely begun.

In an ambitious move to channel this live energy into their recordings, Exiles teamed up with renowned producer Alex Markwell, known for his work with The Delta Riggs, Portugal The Man, to capture the essence of their sound. Their debut album Waiting For Romance is set for release on December 13th and the anticipation is building at pace.

4. Krooked Kings

Krooked Kings, an indie rock band from Salt Lake City, Utah, has been making waves with their authentic sound and heartfelt lyrics. The band’s journey began when lead singer Oliver Martin, after completing a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, returned home and reconnected with high school friends to form the group. Their music, characterized by introspective themes and a blend of indie rock and surf influences, resonates with listeners navigating the complexities of young adulthood. The band’s debut album, “The Comedown,” released in 2021, explores themes of self-discovery and personal growth. Their latest album “Shiver” comes complete with the band’s distinctive blend of dreamy indie and grunge-tinged guitars.

5. The Deenys

The Deenys, an indie rock band from Perth’s northern suburbs, bring a unique sound influenced by their UK and Irish roots combined with Australian indie vibes. Their music blends punchy guitar riffs, heartfelt lyrics, and infectious melodies, carving out a distinct presence in Perth’s music scene. Known for their noughties-inspired UK indie feel, The Deenys have shared stages with prominent Australian artists during regional tours and have also supported The Charlatans, Ride and The Inspiral Carpets.

The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara – It Goes

Throughout this year, The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara (Andrea Papi and Daphne Ang) have consistently demonstrated that they are far from a conventional rock duo. Their expertise in music production has captivated audiences with their grand, cinematic rock soundscapes.

This is further evidenced by their 2024 singles: Mysterium Tremendum, an astonishing fusion of poetry, death metal, and classical orchestration; Feed The Beast, a powerful progressive rock and metal anthem addressing addiction and recovery; and Bite the Bullet, a high-energy rap-metal track featuring veteran Italian rapper Mr Meuri.

TCOMAS introduces their latest track, It Goes, continuing their tradition of expertly crafted anthems. Nameless Friends – Mezzanine

Hailing from Canada, this unique group embraces a distinctive ethos by forgoing traditional names in favour of stage numbers to maintain their collective identity and egalitarian ideology. The primary lineup features Number One (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Number Three (lead guitar and backing vocals), Number Five (bass), and Number Seven (drums). Their extended group includes Number Four (a retired drummer who appears in their videos), Number Six (a keyboardist who played a significant role in promoting their latest album), and Number Two (a backup bassist and sound engineer aspiring to become a permanent member).

In 2023, they released their debut album, Blasphemy, which addressed contemporary social issues such as right-wing bigotry, gendered violence, climate change, and economic inequality. During the promotional tour for this album, Nameless Friends received acclaim for their live shows, which some attendees felt surpassed the recorded versions.

Recently, the band announced a deluxe version of Blasphemy, featuring live versions, remixes of their first two singles, and a new track titled Mezzanine. This single shares its name with their debut EP as an inside joke about their disdain for title tracks and explores the twisted nature of performance.

Mezzanine opens with a cold, poignant guitar that creates an enigmatic atmosphere before exploding into a strikingly intense rock tour de force. With crushing drums, powerful riffs, and Number One’s uncanny vocal delivery, this track guarantees to keep you headbanging all night long. The result is an absolute banger, delivered with engaging theatrical flair.

It would be easy to think that Glytsh are all about rock n roll excess. You would be wrong, their new single Hoax serves as a passionate public health warning against the misuse of drugs. Hoax sets out to shatter the illusion drugs are a creative inspiration and highlight their detrimental impact on creativity and personal well-being. It’s a positive and rather wholesome reminder to prioritise a lifestyle free from drugs, alcohol and other harmful addictions.

Hoax comes out the gate like a runaway train, hitting a point of exhaustion before going again. The intro sounds like the outro with a crashing crescendo that hooks you within seconds of the start. Also, listen out for a playful studio bottom slap between Genoud and Diehl that kicks everything off.

About Glytsh

Comprised of French singer Jennifer Diehl and Swiss guitarist Claire Genoud, Glytsh has rapidly ascended in the London music scene. With several years of touring experience, the duo combine their love for metal music with a passion for dark and haunting sonic soundscapes and visuals.

Within just four months of their formation, Glytsh achieved a significant milestone, selling out their debut show in a 150-capacity room in London. They also embarked on their first UK tour, opening for the NYC-based band Brass Against in prestigious venues such as O2 Academy Manchester and London Electric Brixton.

Naked Sunday – Shine

With an impressive track record, Naked Sunday has made a name for themselves on the indie music scene, gracing stages at renowned festivals like the Rock and Blues Festival and Teddy Rocks Festival, sharing platforms with iconic bands such as The Wildhearts and The Dead Daisies.

Just a few months back, the Midlands-based group from the UK unveiled Vilified, an electrifying, fast-paced alt-rock anthem pulsating with adrenaline and raw energy. Now, they present Shine, a complementary track.

Thematically linked, Vilified explored the turmoil of unjustified slandering, while this new song embraces the desire for a loved one to radiate their inner light despite being “vilified”.

In contrast to its predecessor’s fervent energy, Shine adopts a mellower, more contemplative tone, resembling a heartfelt ballad spanning over six-and-a-half minutes. Lead vocalist Martin’s voice enchants from the onset, backed by subdued instrumentation that builds into emotionally charged choruses, propelled by effervescent guitar riffs and dynamic drumming. The song culminates in a mind-blowing guitar solo, reigniting its fervour in a blaze of musical brilliance.

Heart Rot – ‘Anchors To Elsa’

‘Anchors To Elsa’ opens with the distant, ominous sound of crashing thunder, and honestly, it doesn’t get much happier from there. This is a wailing song of angst, so get with Heart Rot and lash on that black eyeliner – the Elsa mentioned here is definitely not the one of ‘Frozen’ fame. (Or if she is, Arendelle is in bad shape.) 

Heart Rot is an all-female rock band based in New York City. This track makes up half of their 2-part debut release, with the other track being ‘Sunday Night’.

‘Anchors To Elsa’ is an unabashedly morbid Grunge Waltz, with moody lyrics and vibes bordering on the nightmarish.

‘Elsa pours, Elsa screams, Elsa falls over her knees’ sing the unsettling opening lyrics. They remain vague on the details, but paint a picture of mental turmoil, hauntingly remarking that ‘Elsa’s drained, she’s quiet now’ and ‘Episodes will come and go’. The melodies are insistent, with a wailing ‘Woah’ refrain that’s easy to sing along to, the overall repetitiveness creating a trance-like effect. They’re delivered in compelling, gravelly lead vocals that show a lot of power, ranging from moaning to screaming, and backed up by whispery BVs. 

The production combines haunting guitar picking, quavering synths, thrumming bass and moody beats, with a definite 90s flavour, referencing acts like The Pixies. There’s a gothic twist here too in the dramatic styling, with large dynamic shifts and angsty guitar solos. At over 5 minutes, it’s a little too long but would work well in a late-night gig setting. Grunge and rock fans should give this a listen.

Naked Sunday – Vilified

Hailing from Staffordshire, this quarter has gone through several lineup changes since their inception, settling with their current formation since 2018, which consists of Martin Stanyer (vocals/guitar), Laura Stanyer (bass/vocals), Alex Williams (lead guitar) and Liam Collins (drums).

And it was that same year when they had the opportunity to perform at the Rock and Blues festival in Derby, sharing the stage with well-known acts, including The Wildhearts, The Dead Daisies, and The Dan Reed Network, among many others.

But their live experience doesn’t end there because, in 2019, they played at the Teddy Rocks Festival along with some high-calibre acts such as The Darkness, Toploader, and The Zutons.

Aside from all this, their two songs, Lilith and Unbreakable, got featured in the award-winning film Tales of The Creeping Death. They also contributed music for the 2022 movie St Baptistes.

The newest addition to their robust catalogue Vilified is an explosive banger that will assault your senses. Starting at 100,000 miles per hour, Martin’s earthshaking scream, crushing drums, and wild riffage set the ideal tone for this composition, making you feel like you can take on the entire world by yourself.

This cleverly written piece illustrates the scenario of being unfairly vilified, eventually doing the same thing, and falling into a cycle of accusations, refusing to do the right thing. And as the song says: “No one wants to be the hero“.

Vilified will be part of Naked Sunday’s upcoming 3rd album, a work that, despite not having a title or an official release date yet, already counts with some good hype due to the unquestionable skills of these four musicians.

Sydney Hawk – Your Tragedy

Since 2019, Sydney Hawk has blended genres like hard rock, electronica, and alternative. Sydney has also earned a reputation for being a captivating performer, leaving audiences asking for more on every show.

If we could describe Sydney’s sound in simple terms, it would be like a mixture of established acts such as Motionless In White, Skindred, and Bring Me The Horizon but adding a very personal and distinctive touch. As a testament to this, his debut composition, Your Tragedy, is an ideal introduction.

For his first official release, Sydney showcases his songwriting skills, illustrating what it’s like to be in a toxic relationship, narrating from the perspective of a narcissistic person. Such an enthralling way of storytelling grants this piece an almost grim flair that grabs your attention immediately.

Instrumentally speaking, Your Tragedy does justice to its over-the-top lyrics, featuring strident guitars and euphoric electronic arrangements. The icing on the cake is Sydney’s heart-wrenching delivery, shifting between clean and screamy vocals astonishingly well.
