Rising neo soul star Millie Mountain returns with “Inside Out”, a track that reflects on the unravelling of a relationship.

Millie Mountain – Inside Out

Following the critical success of her 2024 debut album Fugitive of the Mind, which Jazz FM’s Tony Minvielle praised as a “competitor for album of the year” and featuring the BBC Radio 6-championed single Pink & Blue, Millie Mountain returns with her latest single, Inside Out. The London-based artist continues her fearless exploration of love, loss, and self-discovery, drawing on her signature blend of Neo-Soul, Jazz/Funk, and R&B.

Inside Out is a raw, poetic track written by Millie and composed by longtime collaborator Stuart Whitehead. Recorded live at Hope Mill Studios in Manchester with her four-piece jazz band Still Waters, the single reflects on the unravelling of a relationship, highlighting emotional imperfections and the blindness love can sometimes bring. Millie explains, “It’s about loving and leaving, about choosing yourself and your health.”

At just 25, Millie Mountain is fast becoming a standout voice in UK Soul and Jazz. Known for her versatility and fearless experimentation, she has received support from BBC Introducing’s Jess Iszatt and featured on platforms like Reprezent, Hoxton Radio, and Voices Radio. Live, she’s no stranger to major stages, performing at Moovin Jazz Fest, supporting Sy Smith at Jazz Café, and touring with The Mouse Outfit alongside icons like Sister Sledge and UB40.

The press imagery for Inside Out is a visual metaphor for emotional contradiction featuring torn raincoats, clown-like makeup, and her whimsical alter ego, Jeanie.’ It’s all part of Millie’s ongoing mission to push artistic boundaries and embrace vulnerability as strength.

“Inside Out blends late-night cool with inner city grit and marks Millie Mountain as one to watch.”

Her style defies easy classification. Millie’s music draws inspiration from artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder, and even Courtney Love, but ultimately fuses influences into something uniquely her own. Often compared vocally to Amy Winehouse, Millie notes, “I love blending all of the artists who have inspired me to date and subconsciously creating my own fusion and sound.”

Inside Out marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter, with more singles and live shows on the way. Millie’s goal is simple: to keep creating, sharing, and connecting. “All I want to do is travel the world doing what I love, creating music and sharing it with people to enjoy.”

As her fanbase continues to grow, so too does her impact “Inside Out” is yet another reminder that Millie Mountain is not just one to watch, but one to listen to, feel with, and believe in.

Known in the indie music scene for her distinctive interpretation of R&B, newcomer Moniah has chosen to explore a fresh direction with her latest indie pop single, Sweet Escape.

Moniah – Sweet Escape

Born and raised in London, Moniah is an emerging artist recognized for her introspective lyricism and genre-blending sound. Inspired by artists such as Billie Eilish, Hope Tala, Raye, and Cat Burns, her music explores themes of self-expression, freedom, and authenticity.

Moniah Sweet Escape on Spotify

Moniah’s passion for music ignited at a young age; by the time she was nine, she was already singing and writing her own songs. However, it was in 2017 that she took a significant step forward by participating in songwriting bootcamps and retreats, which greatly enhanced her skills and refined her craft.

Some notable highlights of Moniah’s emerging career include having four singles featured on various radio stations, such as BBC 1Xtra, BBC 6 Music, Croydon FM, Hoxton Radio, and No Signal Radio. In addition, she has received support from several music outlets, including Dummy Mag, Wordplay Magazine, Niji Magazine, We Plug Good Music, and Atwood Magazine, among others.

After solidifying her presence as a skilled R&B artist, Moniah has chosen to embrace a more indie-oriented style in her latest single, Sweet Escape. Produced by Tim Blok, this track delves into themes of breaking free from societal pressures, pursuing love, and fully embracing the present moment.

Fueled by melancholy-infused guitar chords that blend seamlessly with an infectious upbeat rhythm, Sweet Escape is both beautiful and deeply emotional. Moniah’s rich vocals add an extra layer of sentimentality to the melody. Together, these perfectly balanced elements create a compelling sense of liberation and escape.

“Sweet Escape is a powerful expression of freedom, showcasing a sonic breakthrough filled with raw, unfiltered passion.”

With a fresh perspective and only upward momentum ahead, Moniah continues to carve her path through exciting new artistic directions. In the meantime, this talented newcomer is gearing up to release her debut EP in spring 2025, a project that can’t come soon enough.

When their debut single ”Back to The Drawing Board” kicks in for probably the 30th time on my headphones, I keep thinking Chloe and the Butlers deserve much more credit than being ”just” something to dance to – they’re epic.

Chloe and the Butlers – Back to the Drawing Board

During the first 3 or 5 seconds of the song, so many things have already happened musically that they set a bar – and the standards for modern funk – extremely high. Their reference albums might be from the golden era of 60s and 70s Motown, but they sound nothing nostalgic or a ”pastiche” as great songs just always seem, feel and appear as current – ”Back to the Drawing Board” is no exception.

Chloe and the Butlers – Back to the Drawing Board

Chloe’s sound – what a voice! – has become so refined by listening to, examining and forming her own musical artistic thesis – maybe subconsciously – based on the very best of the best, like Aretha (Franklin) and Marvin Gaye but to me, her powerhouse vocals remind me more of James Brown’s almost brutal energy and charisma that’s nearly impossible to capture, than let’s say Gladys Knight or other female soul ”royals”.

That detail for instance made me convinced as their new fan that I am witnessing the artistic and musical growth of something way above the meridian – if their first single is this good, what on earth will they be releasing next? The bass is played with gusto, the drumming is magical and thanks to Chloe’s vocal presence the verse is equally satisfying as the chorus, stylish bridge and the lead guitar solo towards the end. The song kind of ”fades out” to the starting point, making the journey reach full circle and ready to start over played on repeat.

”Essex now has its own soul regals. Chloe and the Butlers are baptized in Motown but deliver modern powerhouse-voice fueled sacramental musicianship.”

Leicester duo The Daydream Club have put their unique spin on the little-known Sam Cooke track ‘Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me’ and you need to hear it.

Sam Cooke – Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me

Sam Cooke is known and recognised as one of the most influential soul artists of all time, earning him the nickname The King of Soul. He is best known for hits including What A Wonderful World, A Change Is Gonna Come and Bring It On Home.

During his tragically short 8-year career, Cooke released 29 singles that charted in the Billboard Top 40 Charts, and 20 that charted in the Top 10. In 1964 he was shot and killed by the manager of a motel in Los Angeles. After his death, an inquest and investigation ruled his death was a justifiable homicide.

Cooke is included on Billboard’s list of the 35 greatest R&B artists of all time. Two years before he died in 1962 he released the album Twistin’ The Night Away which contained the single of the same name. The single peaked at number one on the R&B chart and number 6 on the UK singles chart. The song was recorded with the infamous Wrecking Crew as session musicians.

Track 4 on this album was a little-known track ‘Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me’ an upbeat number complete with trumpets, a honky tonk style piano and Cooke’s trademark soul yearnings.

The Daydream Club – Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me

Fast forward to 2024, and Leicester duo The Daydream Club has chosen to rework this little-known track to make it their own.

Their version is rooted in their trademark boy-and-girl harmonies, which sound sublime paired with their stripped-back, acoustic arrangement. Paula Pickering’s honeyed vocals hug your ear lobes joyously.

The Daydream Club have transformed Cooke’s big band, club track into an intimate and deeply personal voice note, something you might leave a loved one. The repeating refrain “I know you’re gonna miss me” is as much confidence as insecurity.

Hailing from the West Midlands, George Rose is back with his latest offering, ‘Soul Connection’. Exploring the intensity of love and romance, George Rose blends alternative indie, electronica, and R&B sentiments to forge an experimental piece of pop music.

George Rose – Soul Connection

Right from the offset, the track introduces itself with a strong sense of rhythm and melody. The dreamy synthesizers cascade and allow for the simple – but nonetheless irresistible – bass line to fashion a robust rhythmic feel. Before long, the lyric cuts into the soundscape – “only you understand the traumatic lust under my skin” – evoking themes of romantic dependency with the protagonist longing for a sense of emotion or feeling.

The track itself is partly influenced by Rose’s own experience with ASD and how it can affect and distract from different parts of everyday life, with fascination and distraction being rooted within the artistry of ‘Soul Connection’.

Clocking in at five minutes, ‘Soul Connection’ makes no apology for the artistic license it takes in exploring different feels and genres to create a distinctive aura and feeling – this is one of my favourite aspects of the song. The experimental synthesizers, drum machines, and guitar lines would individually be labelled with different styles – but by bringing them together produces something that feels as unique as it does exciting. The best example of this unfolds as the track draws to an impressive climax for the final chorus. Guitars wail with captivating harmonies whilst the sonic landscape melts away into an experimental vastness, reminiscent of Kraftwerk or Brian Eno.

The authenticity within ‘Soul Connection’ is another aspect that makes it feel so compelling. The way George has masterfully woven his personal experiences into something that feels relatable builds upon his adept ability to be as innovative as possible, and this is something he should be admired for.

‘Soul Connection’ is a sensational pop soundscape, offering an innovative take on an array of genres with heartfelt storytelling.

Cerulean Creek’s ‘Sentimental Colors’ is one of the most interesting, mellow jazz pop tracks I’ve heard this year.

Cerulean Creek – Sentimental Colors

Hailing from California, he has blended the nuanced feel of jazz guitar and contemporary attitudes of alternative indie artists to craft a whole new aura that feels as soulful as it does melodic.

Setting the scene with its chic chord progressions, the track builds a gentle atmosphere. The sound is then carried forward with its melodic Rhodes and lively drum beats which set the stall out for the track to shine. Cutting through the airwaves, the vocal top lines where ‘Sentimental Colours’ really gives its finest moments.

The melodies and harmonies give the track its swagger and attitude which keeps the track engaging and stimulating. At its forefront, ‘Sentimental Colors’ explores themes of uncertainty and wonder while dealing with emotional discomfort and overwhelm. It’s refreshing to hear different themes and perspectives introduced in this genre, as it has a historical tendency to become saturated with love and heartbreak. By taking this creative license, Cerulean Creek has not only demonstrated his ability to weave different genres together but also to show such creative emotional intelligence.

It’s really interesting to hear how having such a multifaceted set of influences fuse together in order to produce something that has such a captivating feel. In my time I’ve heard plenty of jazz guitarists – and more than my fair share of indie bands – but never had the pleasure of listening to someone who’s had the artistry to produce an amalgamation of the two. If Thom Yorke formed an indie sleaze band with Jamiroquai and Tom Misch – you’d have something pretty close to the brilliance of Cerulean Creek… That’s a legendary set of influences to set a musical benchmark. Every note, beat and chord is delivered with an astute contextual finesse and shows how ‘Sentimental Colors’ is both artistically mature and creatively exciting. Cerulean Creek is going to be a very interesting one to watch!

‘Sentimental Colors’ is a sensational example of indie jazz pop, honing in with Cerulean Creek’s chic guitar skills and sophisticated sense of rhythm.

‘Always Be My Almost’ is the latest release from rising star Emily Fields as she explores love, loss, regret, and grief, all encapsulated into a soul-filled pop anthem.

Emily Fields – Always Be My Almost

Since releasing her debut single in 2022, Fields has gone from strength to strength and has now released her most heart-wrenching effort yet.

The only way for me to start this post is by saying that ‘Always Be My Almost’ has to be one of the most beautiful songs I have heard this year. The way the remorse for a time gone by pours out of the leading piano lines before the tension builds elegantly to reach the silky heights of its chorus is mesmerizing. The track blends together in the most enchanting of fashions with its string arrangements and melancholic piano lines. Fields possesses a unique way with words as it seems she leaves no letter unturned when it comes to telling a story that’s not only brim-filled with emotion but equally as gripping and immersive. For this reason, it’s hard to pick out a single ‘standout’ moment in the track as each lyric is as strong as the next – be it the despairing narration of the verses or the heart-wrenching retrospect of the chorus… “You will always be my almost, what I wanted was forever.”

One of my favourite aspects of this single is the way it continues to grow and add emotion until the final belt of the chorus. It could have been quite easy to make this a simple four-minute piano ballad – drifting from one section into the other punctuated only by chord changes – but Fields is much more interesting than that and has crafted a record that is engaging, exciting, and heartbreaking. You can almost feel the pain and agony that has been woven into each chord and each lyric – and that’s what makes this song so beautiful. It would only be fair to link ‘Always Be My Almost’ to some of the great names in music history – if Adele recorded this, there would be no doubt about it flying off the shelves and breaking streaming records. Emily Fields is one to watch – mark my words.

‘Always Be My Almost’ is a heartwrenching ballad to the one that got away, crafted with a hefty dose of heartbreak and a soul-filled edge.
