Efterlo and The Daydream Club ‘Somewhere To Belong’ is a dreamy collaboration and the story about searching and finding something significant.

Efterlo, The Daydream Club – ‘Somewhere To Belong’

A serendipitous introduction led to a wonderful collaboration. Artist Jess Matthews was seeking a producer and was directed to Adam Pickering (The Daydream Club) by BBC Introducing. The pair met up and clicked like old friends, writing and recording three finished songs in just one session, which led to the creation of Efterlo.

‘Somewhere To Belong’ was written and recorded in the space of a few hours and also features Paula Pickering (The Daydream Club) alongside Jess and Adam. Jess and Paula’s voices blend so well, at times it is hard to distinguish the difference.

“It’s one of those songs that almost created itself it was so effortless, I’m a lucky chap getting to work with these two brilliant ladies”. [Adam Pickering]

Blending ambient, dream pop and experimental production, Efterlo’s debut delivers an immersive and emotive soundtrack jammed full of hazy melodies and textured soundscapes. We can’t wait to hear what else was created in that session.

The term “independent artist” conjures images of musicians forging their own path, free from the constraints of traditional record labels. But what does being an “independent artist” truly mean in today’s music industry? And is the autonomy worth the trade-offs?

What is an Independent Artist?

An independent artist, or “indie artist,” is a musician who operates without the support of a major record label. (Sony, Univeral or Warner) As an independent artist, you can release music on your own or via an independent record label.

What’s the difference between an Unsigned and an Independent Artist?

If you self-release, the answer is nothing. However, mainly unsigned artists prefer to be called independent artists, after all it sounds more empowering. For a few, it’s a conscious choice independent artists like Radiohead have chosen to leave the confines of major label structures. However, for the majority who are unable to attract label support, the only choice is to forge their own path.

Radiohead on Spotify

Thanks to digital distribution, indie artists can now have the opportunity to share their music globally, engage directly with fans, and even make substantial earnings through streaming, merchandise, and live performances.

The Pros and Cons of Independence

Being independent comes with enviable freedoms and daunting challenges. Here’s a closer look:

Pros

  1. Creative Freedom: Indie artists maintain full artistic control, able to experiment with their sound, lyrics, and style without a corporate filter. They don’t have to tailor their music to market trends or follow restrictive label rules.
  2. Ownership: Unlike major label contracts, which can demand a hefty portion of revenue, indie artists typically own their masters and copyright. This can provide long-term financial security if their music gains value over time.
  3. Direct Fan Engagement: Independence allows artists to form closer connections with fans, which has become crucial in an era where authenticity is key. Platforms like Instagram, Patreon, and Bandcamp enable personal interaction and even financial support directly from fans.

Cons

  1. Financial Risk: Without the backing of a major label, funding music production, touring, and promotion falls solely on the artist. From equipment to hiring professionals for mixing and mastering, costs can stack up quickly.
  2. Limited Resources: Labels bring professional networks and resources that make promotion easier. Independent artists must work tirelessly to gain traction and can struggle to achieve the same visibility without industry connections.
  3. Time Constraints: Indie artists are often managing every aspect of their careers—from social media to booking gigs—which can dilute the time and energy they can dedicate to the craft itself.

Independent Artists and Spotify

Spotify announced a record-breaking payout of $4.5 billion to independent artists and labels in 2023, marking the first time indies (including DIY artists) contributed roughly half of Spotify’s total music revenue, reaching $9 billion.

“This shows how streaming is levelling the playing field, giving independent artists access to the same global audience and tools as the superstars,” Spotify stated in an update on its Loud & Clear portal.

According to Spotify, this $4.5 billion payout is the highest ever earned by independents from a single retailer in a single year. It’s also greater than the total revenue of the recorded music industry in every country worldwide, apart from the United States (based on IFPI’s 2023 Global Music Report).

Key Independent Artists Leading the Way

Despite these challenges, a growing wave of independent artists are finding success and setting an example for others. Here are two standout names in the indie scene: Connor Price and The Daydream Club.

Connor Price is a testament to the power of social media for indie musicians. With collaborations that span international boundaries, he’s leveraged platforms like TikTok to reach millions of listeners globally. Price’s music combines clever wordplay and emotive themes, drawing fans not only for his artistry but for his down-to-earth presence online. His journey from actor to independent rapper shows how indie artists can diversify and redefine their careers without a label’s guidance. At the time of writing Connor Price has over 9,000,000 monthly listeners.

Connor Price on Spotify

The Daydream Club, founded by husband-and-wife duo Adam and Paula Pickering, have left an indelible mark on the indie-pop soundscape. Their music, blending rich boy, and girl harmonies and delicate instrumentation, evokes a dreamy quality that lives up to their name. The Daydream Club has developed a global following by embracing streaming and cultivating a community around their serene, reflective sound. At the time of writing, they have over 100,000,000 streams on Spotify. Their independent path reflects a dedication to authentic expression over commercial pressures, a hallmark of the indie ethos.

Independent Artists Outside Spotify

It’s important to recognise that Spotify is not the only distribution route. A small number of independent artists are making NFTS and the Blockchain work for them. The scramble to find a decentralised approach that is both sustainable and replicable for more artists is only set to continue in the coming years. You can read more about artists selling NFTs here.

In Summary

While the road is tough, the rise of independent artists like Connor Price and The Daydream Club illustrates how artists today can craft meaningful careers outside traditional frameworks. In an industry where the indie approach is more viable than ever, it’s clear that the future of music will continue to be shaped by artists willing to go their own way.

Leicester duo The Daydream Club have put their unique spin on the little-known Sam Cooke track ‘Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me’ and you need to hear it.

Sam Cooke – Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me

Sam Cooke is known and recognised as one of the most influential soul artists of all time, earning him the nickname The King of Soul. He is best known for hits including What A Wonderful World, A Change Is Gonna Come and Bring It On Home.

During his tragically short 8-year career, Cooke released 29 singles that charted in the Billboard Top 40 Charts, and 20 that charted in the Top 10. In 1964 he was shot and killed by the manager of a motel in Los Angeles. After his death, an inquest and investigation ruled his death was a justifiable homicide.

Cooke is included on Billboard’s list of the 35 greatest R&B artists of all time. Two years before he died in 1962 he released the album Twistin’ The Night Away which contained the single of the same name. The single peaked at number one on the R&B chart and number 6 on the UK singles chart. The song was recorded with the infamous Wrecking Crew as session musicians.

Track 4 on this album was a little-known track ‘Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me’ an upbeat number complete with trumpets, a honky tonk style piano and Cooke’s trademark soul yearnings.

The Daydream Club – Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me

Fast forward to 2024, and Leicester duo The Daydream Club has chosen to rework this little-known track to make it their own.

Their version is rooted in their trademark boy-and-girl harmonies, which sound sublime paired with their stripped-back, acoustic arrangement. Paula Pickering’s honeyed vocals hug your ear lobes joyously.

The Daydream Club have transformed Cooke’s big band, club track into an intimate and deeply personal voice note, something you might leave a loved one. The repeating refrain “I know you’re gonna miss me” is as much confidence as insecurity.

Music has always played different roles in people’s lives. It can be the hedonistic release, or the soundtrack to a painful breakup. It can chill you out or hype you up. To Be Human:  Ambient Tapes by muvii mento recognises the power of music to soundtrack the human experience and that’s why it deserves your attention.

muvii mento -To Be Human: Ambient Tapes

‘To Be Human: Ambient Tapes’ is the debut release for muvii mento, the latest alias from the long-time writing partnership of Adam and Paula Pickering. (AKA The Daydream Club).

Released in October 2023 ‘To Be Human: Ambient Tapes’ was written and recorded during lockdown in 2020. The album explores relatable feelings from first loves, to grieving loss and then picking ourselves back up to go again and again. This is an album inspired by a yearning for human connection and a study of what it means to be human. The 10 beautiful tracks effortlessly soundtrack the moments and experiences we all go through.

I remember a time when ‘chill-out’ music was everywhere, every pop track was given its chilled-out remix, and the Big Chill Festival was the summer’s cool, must-have ticket. But back then ‘chill-out’ music felt fairly vacuous. It was cool but never really seemed to serve any serious purpose. Conversations about mental health were not a thing.

Fast forward 20 years and that has changed. A culture and an entire industry have sprung up around mental health with apps like Headspace and Calm finding their way into our lives. Several research studies show music enhances sleep and it’s been proven to lessen the impact of depression and anxiety.

To Be Human: Ambient Tapes positively contributes to this story. With its ethereal layers and swells of emotions it’s an album that encourages you to stop, take a moment for yourself and breathe. This is music with a purpose.

Each track on this album carefully signposts a moment or emotion. It’s almost like an instructional manual allowing you to jump to the chapter you need most.

We Begin / We Love / We Trust / We Fall / We Grow etc.

“To Be Human: Ambient Tapes is a compelling collection, that has been made with a huge amount of thought, love and empathy. Take a moment out of your day to listen.”

Adam and Paula Pickering (AKA The Daydream Club)

Known for their genre-hopping, the duo previously experimented with atmospheric music on the album ‘Ambient Project // Sound Asleep’ under the name The Daydream Club. They decided they needed a dedicated outlet for their love of ambient music so they consider this album the official handover from The Daydream Club to muvii mento for that musical universe.

The Daydream Club bring the optimism, with their feel-good summer banger Free + Easy.

The Daydream Club – Free + Easy

I recently found myself listening to an episode of The Wise Choice Podcast hosted by The Daydream Club. During the show, the couple were discussing the unashamed optimism of two records released in the 1908s. Whitney Houston’s ‘All At Once’ and On The Wings Of Love both written by Jeffrey Osbourne.

Both are great records that if released today would feel out of step with the zeitgeist. Following the Pandemic and the current Cost of Living crisis, it’s all too easy for music to go to the dark place. So it begs the question how do you write optimistic music at a time of such pessimism? The answer it seems is to anchor it in a British obsession – the weather.

The Daydream Club explain: “We wanted to make the perfect summer song with all the good stuff like brass, Latin percussion, desert funk guitar and lots of vocal harmonies.” The duo describe it as a ‘Happy Banger’.

That description is fairly accurate, it’s hard not to listen to this song without a smile on your face. The Daydream Club have poured summer into this record, drawing reference from the desert funk of bands like Khruangbin. The riff in this song will get in your head and most likely drag you to your local cocktail bar. You’ve been warned.

I would say this is a new sound for The Daydream Club, but in reality, it’s just an extension of their joyous musical meanderings that continue to defy lazy genre attachments.  Free + Easy pulls from Latin, Jazz, Dub, Electronic and 70s Soul.

The accompanying music video shows exactly what The Daydream Club are all about. The track was written produced and mastered by the duo, while the video was shot in their home studio and showcases their musical skills as Adam effortlessly switches between vocals, drums, bass and guitar while Paula joins in with vocals, keys, percussion and a fair amount of dancing. It’s an exhilarating ride.

The Daydream Club release their new single ‘I Will Not Hurt You’ and in one simple act demonstrate all that is good and powerful about music.

The Daydream Club – I Will Not Hurt You

A while ago husband and wife duo The Daydream Club announced their plans to write personalised songs in response to fan requests and stories. ‘I Will Not Hurt You’ is the first glimpse at the output of this bold plan.

The Fan Story

Here at Right Chord Music we always advocate creating a story around your music, but The Daydream Club have really taken that concept to heart. NB. The names of the characters have been changed to protect their privacy.

Adam and Paula (The Daydream Club) received a moving story from a fan, the first line read: “My name is Maria and I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for a stranger who stood up and fought for me when everyone else had given up, even myself.”

One night she couldn’t take any more and decided to take her own life, but Michael (a stranger she had just started messaging online) showed up and stopped her from going through with her plans (this was the first time they would meet in person). He stayed with her through the night to make sure she was safe. Fast-forward in time and Michael has proven to be someone she could trust, they now live happily together with their two children.

“We are honoured that Maria has trusted us with her story, it brought us both to tears on first read and on numerous occasions while writing this song. We decided to write a song for her from Michael’s perspective so that we could express how amazing she is and affirm that she is loved, safe and does deserve to be happy. We hope they have a wonderful life together.” The Daydream Club

‘I Will Not Hurt’ You will forever serve as a time-capsule memory of when light appeared at the end of a very dark tunnel. It’s a reminder there is good in the world and that love really can overcome any adversity.

“My name is Maria and I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for a stranger who stood up and fought for me when everyone else had given up, even myself.”

The stripped-back production draws attention to every honest word of this story while the gospel-inspired swell provides a metaphor for the moment of divine intervention that saved Maria’s life. The decision for Adam to take the lead vocal, only makes this more powerful and he eloquently and sensitively assumes the role of Michael, assuring Maria it’s going to be ok.

It’s hard not to listen to this without emotion flooding your heart, but while it’s a sad story ‘I Will Not Hurt You’ ultimately celebrates all that is good and powerful about humanity and music.

We are delighted to announce Poco Poco Records has joined the RCM Indie Collective to help more incredible independent artists get heard and discovered.

Introducing Poco Poco Records

Poco Poco Records was formed in the UK in 2010 by musical duo The Daydream Club. The name ‘Poco Poco’ roughly translates to “Little, Little Records”. It’s a deliberately eclectic record label covering indie-folk to electronic, ambient to neo-classical and alt-pop to experimental jazz. Nothing is off the table as long as there is passion behind the tunes. The label is currently home to The Daydream Club, A. J. Pickering and Toba Fakt, with more to come.

Adam Pickering from Poco Poco Records will be scouring the Right Chord Music submissions database to scout incredible new talent. Rather than writing blog reviews, he will be creating short-form video reviews highlighting his favourite discoveries. These videos will be shared across the Right Chord Music social channels.

About The RCM Indie Collective

The RCM Indie Collective was created by the Right Chord Music Blog to help promote more incredible independent artists. The RCM Indie Collective gets more new music heard

We allow unsigned and independent artists to pick up promotional support from our network of partner Blogs, Podcasts, Playlists and now Record Labels all from one free submission to Right Chord Music.

Music blog aggregation services are nothing new, but with SubmitHub and now Musosoup charging musicians just to submit their music, costs are spiralling.

“We wanted to create a service that gets back to the music, which is fairer and more accessible for everyone,” says founder Mark Knight. “With our service, the submission is free and you only pay for a guaranteed review or feature, there is no obligation to accept.”

Mark Knight still continues to write reviews for free, but there are only so many reviews one person can write! To support more artists, Right Chord Music now employs a team of 20+ freelance writers this allows RCM to dramatically increase the number of reviews they can publish. A review on Right Chord Music with a freelance writer costs £6 with 100% going to the writer.

All members of the RCM Indie Collective set their own prices which are agreed upon between the artist and the blog before agreeing to a review.

It seems fitting that on the morning we wake and look out the window to see a snow scene reminiscent of a Christmas Card that we share ‘Winter,’ the second solo release from AJ Pickering. Captured in one take this beautiful improvisation has us dreaming of log fires and roasted chestnuts.

AJ Pickering Winter - Improv 1

AJ Pickering – Winter / Improv 1

There is something magical about seeing the creative process live and with this release, AJ Pickering has invited us to not only hear the one-take live audio recording but also to see it with a live video of that moment. It’s a wonderful idea that adds a real warmth to his soundtrack to cold.

Winter-Improv 1 is a wonderfully reflective and serene soundtrack, close your eyes and you can almost see the icicles melting on the front porch.

About AJ Pickering

AJ Pickering is a British composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist who has worked with the likes of Burberry, Merrell, BBC, Homegoods and has acquired over 100 Million streams with his various projects. This project is an outlet for his solo piano and composing musings, focusing on neo-classical, classical crossover and ambient. His pieces are improvised and recorded at the moment they’re being created along with accompanying videos to capture that same performance.

“I started learning piano at the age of 5 along with gymnastics, karate, swimming etc but piano/music was the only hobby to go the distance… mostly thanks to my folks for encouraging me but also to my piano teacher at the time, Steve Allen. He spotted early on that I didn’t want to do the standard piano grades and music theory route… I wanted to create. He wisely advised my folks that I needed a keyboard with lots of buttons. This eventually led to acquiring a Roland MC-50 midi sequencer (using floppy discs!) and a Roland Sound Canvas. With these two bits of equipment, I could compose my own backing tracks and build worlds of sounds on my own. Years later I eventually decided to learn the music theory side but my true passion has always been to create and to play my feelings”. AJ Pickering
