Alex Krawczky pays homage to Grateful Dead lore with new track Love Through Sound.

Alex Krawcky – Love Through Sound

Alex Krawczky, Canadian Folk Music Award nominee, is a folk pop singer-songwriter based in Toronto, Canada. Her latest release, ‘Love Through Sound’ is a touching tribute to peace, togetherness and the uplifting power of music. The track was co-written with long-time collaborator Robbie Roth and produced at Toronto’s Union Sound.

On a count of four, the song opens with a warm acoustic guitar melody, underpinned by steady, driving percussion that immediately sets a heartfelt and inviting tone. The arrangement feels both intimate and expansive.

Alex’s vocals float delicately over the instrumentation. Her voice is warm and expressive, carrying each lyric with gentle sincerity and emotional depth. There’s a sense of effortless control in her delivery, every note feels intentional, allowing the story of the song to unfold naturally.

The track pays homage to the classic Grateful Dead songs “Casey Jones,” “Cumberland Mine,” and “Uncle Sam’s Blues.” This influence is clear right from the opening lines: “Casey Jones, you’ve got me riding high,” followed by “Take me down to the Cumberland mine,” and “Uncle Sam’s blues were playing.” These lyrical nods create a bridge between eras, blending nostalgic references with a modern, heartfelt interpretation. Alex manages to honour the roots of these iconic tracks while maintaining her own distinct artistic identity.

Midway through the song, a short instrumental section emerges where a WAH pedal guitar takes centre stage. The tone is rich and expressive, lending the piece a touch of 1970s psychedelia. Behind it, haunting vocal harmonies drift gently, wrapping the soundscape in a subtle, otherworldly atmosphere. The interplay between the guitar and the harmonies builds tension and texture, making the listener feel suspended in a dreamlike moment before the rhythm gently pulls them back.

‘This is a folk song that feels almost dreamlike and ethereal in every note’

As the track moves toward its conclusion, the wah-laden guitar returns with renewed intensity. Alex joins in, harmonising with the guitar through soft “la la la’s,” creating a unique and dynamic closing section. It feels spontaneous yet intentional, a final expression of freedom and release. The ending leaves a lingering impression, as if the song continues to echo long after the final note fades.

Tuff Luck find themselves on ‘Fame & Fortune’, creating an EP that will delight any lover of music, especially those looking for a genre-bending experience.

Tuff Luck – Fame & Fortune

Tuff Luck is a 5-piece band from Vernon, BC, Canada. Their energy is second to none, and their new EP ‘Fame & Fortune’ does nothing but solidify this.

The opening of ‘Fame & Fortune’ kicks off with a genuinely unique sound blending what seems to be Rock, Country and classic Rock N Roll. The whole opening song is mischievously great in the way it depicts the life of someone thrust into fame.

Things seem to calm down at the beginning of ‘The Nothing’, whilst the blasting harmonica keeps us alert. The song quickly builds on the playful, insightful lyricism the band is known for. The first two songs mesh to create a hard-hitting, truth-telling tale.

‘Foxy Little Mama’ is the shortest of the bunch in terms of track time, but that doesn’t stop it from packing a punch. The two minutes and forty-nine seconds offer a funky break from the serious themes of before. The jive is high, and the atmosphere is good. This break slots perfectly midway through the album and gets us ready for the most indulgent track on the list.

Standing at six minutes and ten seconds, ‘The Reaper’ allows for the instrumental power of the group to shine. Hoarse, vicious vocals regularly rip through the exciting blend of instruments, creating a track that rises and falls continuously.

The last song has a nice ending with a classic feel, as ‘Bottle of Scotch’ brings an end to the proceedings. The song allows the album to end with a bang and leaves the listener hyped up and ready for more.

The album blends the five songs seamlessly and demonstrates Tuff Luck’s ability to create a well-thought-out sequence of music. I look forward to their future projects and hope they continue their journey with the same tenacity they’ve shown on this EP.

Noah Malcolm, a queer Canadian artist, releases ‘Cereal’ his latest heartwarming single about falling in love for the first time.

The track is warm and wistful, evoking a deep sense of nostalgia and taking listeners back to the feeling of being young and in love. Noah captures the experience of falling for someone for the first time, and how that love stays with you forever, even after they’ve left your life. His lyrics tell a poignant story of how healing relationships can be, the joy they bring, and the way we reminisce about those early moments with the first person who truly made us feel seen and loved.

However, ‘Cereal’ also explores the pain of watching flaws in the relationship surface, and how, despite a desire to stay together forever, time and circumstances can cause people to drift apart. The song paints a beautiful picture of learning to love for the first time and how those experiences shape and transform us.

This track is especially relatable and comforting for queer listeners. Noah wrote ‘Cereal’ after the end of his first serious relationship, which had been a source of support during some of the most challenging moments of his life, including his struggles with family rejection after coming out. Sadly, many queer people face trauma when their families reject them, and Noah’s music offers a reminder that they are not alone. It’s a message of hope—that, even in those moments of pain, you will eventually find someone who makes you feel safe and supported. And if they leave, there will always be a community ready to catch you.

‘Cereal’ is a delicate indie-folk meditation on both love’s magic and its messiness. The instrumentation features soothing plucked strings, piano, and ambient synth layers. Noah’s calming vocals provide a sense of comfort throughout. Compared to his previous releases, this track feels more intimate and introspective, with deeper, more revealing lyrics—making it the perfect cozy tune for the autumn season.

Noah Malcolm’s latest single feels like a warm hug, evoking the unforgettable sensation of falling in love for the first time and capturing the beauty of that experience.

Rising artist Rosevi, also known as TheWildLatina, has just released her third official track, Heart Eyes, a compelling song that explores the intoxicating emotions of love and infatuation.

Rosevi – Heart Eyes

Originally from Costa Rica and now based in Canada, Rosevi is a 23-year-old independent musician and internet personality. Her musical journey began at the age of five when she started learning the piano, a skill that has significantly influenced her songwriting. Through her music, Rosevi has found a powerful outlet for her emotions, using her lyrics to share her personal stories and experiences.

Not only is Rosevi a talented musician, but she is also an experienced performer who has graced many stages, from charity events to local venues. Despite having released only a few singles, she has already garnered thousands of streams, with tracks like Life Sucks and It Kills Me capturing the attention of listeners. With Heart Eyes, Rosevi is continuing to build her growing fanbase.

Influenced by her current relationship, Heart Eyes delves into the thrilling and sometimes overwhelming nature of love. It explores how emotions tied to this emotion can feel both exhilarating and terrifying, all at once. The melody for the song came to life during a visit to one of Los Angeles’s most exclusive clubs, where Rosevi was accompanied by her partner. Their bond, which has flourished despite challenges, served as the perfect backdrop for the track. While at the club, the DJ played a song featuring the phrase “heart eyes,” sparking an idea in Rosevi. She turned to her partner, declaring that she had found the inspiration for her next song.

Heart Eyes begins a stunning showcase of Rosevi’s vocal ability, swiftly transitioning into an energetic, uplifting pop track. The infectious production and memorable chorus make it an ideal anthem for those who embrace the thrill of love.

“Heart Eyes effectively captures its heartfelt theme, delivering an aural experience as wholesome as it is addictive.”

In just three songs, Rosevi has demonstrated a clear passion and dedication to her craft, showcasing an artist eager to grow and evolve. It will be exciting to see where her journey takes her next.

Canadian rockers Nameless Friends are releasing their new song Mezzanine in promotion of their latest deluxe album and their ongoing UK tour.

Nameless Friends – Mezzanine

Hailing from Canada, this unique group embraces a distinctive ethos by forgoing traditional names in favour of stage numbers to maintain their collective identity and egalitarian ideology. The primary lineup features Number One (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Number Three (lead guitar and backing vocals), Number Five (bass), and Number Seven (drums). Their extended group includes Number Four (a retired drummer who appears in their videos), Number Six (a keyboardist who played a significant role in promoting their latest album), and Number Two (a backup bassist and sound engineer aspiring to become a permanent member).

In 2023, they released their debut album, Blasphemy, which addressed contemporary social issues such as right-wing bigotry, gendered violence, climate change, and economic inequality. During the promotional tour for this album, Nameless Friends received acclaim for their live shows, which some attendees felt surpassed the recorded versions.

Recently, the band announced a deluxe version of Blasphemy, featuring live versions, remixes of their first two singles, and a new track titled Mezzanine. This single shares its name with their debut EP as an inside joke about their disdain for title tracks and explores the twisted nature of performance.

Mezzanine opens with a cold, poignant guitar that creates an enigmatic atmosphere before exploding into a strikingly intense rock tour de force. With crushing drums, powerful riffs, and Number One’s uncanny vocal delivery, this track guarantees to keep you headbanging all night long. The result is an absolute banger, delivered with engaging theatrical flair.

Mezzanine is a powerful and evocative rock tune, distinguished by its mesmerizing artistic eccentricity.

In addition to the deluxe version of Blasphemy, set for release in September, Nameless Friends are on their first-ever UK tour, aptly named ‘Cross The Pond.’ Be sure to check out their upcoming dates:

  • July 17th, Birmingham, Dead Wax Digbeth
  • July 18th, London, The Waiting Room
  • July 19th, Brighton, The Pipeline
  • July 20th, Cardiff, The Moon
  • July 21st, Swansea, The Bunkhouse

Canadian singer-songwriter Dylan Menzie kicks-off the next era of his career with the uplifting new single ‘Strong Enough’, offering a preview of his forthcoming album.

Dylan Menzie – Strong Enough

Since launching his career in 2013, Dylan Menzie has consistently built a reputation as a highly skilled musician. His distinctive take on folk music, infused with elements of pop and rock, has been described as indie-pop Americana.

Dylan’s musical journey includes tens of thousands of streams and performances at prestigious venues and festivals globally. He’s graced stages at the Edmonton Folk Festival, Australia Music Week, Breakout West, M for Montreal, and Americanafest UK, among others. His acoustic EP Modern Classic earned him the Rising Star Recording of the Year at the 2022 East Coast Music Awards and SOCAN Songwriter of the Year at the 2024 Music PEI Awards.

With such an impressive background, Dylan is gearing up for the next chapter of his artistic adventure with his new song, Strong Enough. This track, born from a sad moment, ultimately centres on themes of perseverance and moving forward.

Elaborating on the events that inspired this composition, Dylan Menzie explains:

When you pour your soul into something – it can weigh heavily on your sense of self when it doesn’t meet whatever expectations you had for it. Putting art into the world can feel like such a weird high-wire act – to balance putting such personal experiences into something and then trying to sell them.

At the same time – I feel like dedicating my life to writing and performing songs has helped me grow into a much deeper version of myself – and that’s a worthwhile pursuit that I can’t see myself stopping.

Musically, Strong Enough supports its motivational message with infectious instrumentation that could easily find a place on your favourite pop radio station. With foot-tapping beats, head-nodding guitar strums, and delightful violin arrangements, Dylan pours his heart out. His soulful songwriting could ignite a fire even in the Arctic.

“Strong Enough is a blast, lyrically inspirational and wickedly catchy.”

Strong Enough is the first single from Dylan Menzie’s upcoming album North American Dream Kid, set for release on September 6, 2024. If you’re in the area, don’t miss the chance to see Dylan and his band on tour through the western Canadian provinces:

Returning to the scene, Canada-based Maddisun is back with her first single of 2024, ‘Feelin’ It Again’. Since the release of her debut album in 2020, she has picked up over 500,000 streams and a loyal fanbase.

Maddisun – Feelin It Again

Born and raised in British Columbia, Maddisun’s musical education consisted of indie-folk, with a healthy dose of rock n roll.

Starting with the gentle swagger of the chugging guitar line, ‘Feelin’ It Again’ is Maddisun’s first release since 2023’s ‘All Or Nothing’. Maddisun’s beautiful vocal is one of the first breathtaking moments of the track, as the lyrics of spirit, optimism and angst fill the soundwaves with poignant imagery.

Though the track starts from humble beginnings, it’s not long before it opens up with its effortlessly vibrant chorus. Maddisun’s ability to naturally convey her experiences and sentiments in song should be marvelled. Coupled with the uplifting instrumentation, ‘Feelin’ It Again’ offers something unfiltered and genuine.

Lyrically, the imagery within the track is sensational. Channeling Joni Mitchell, Maddisun has the expert ability to deal with tough issues with such finesse and creative intelligence. As well as this, she has a sensational capacity to blend different musical genres to create something new.

The overdriven guitars give that alt-rock edge, whilst the arrangement retains that ‘Phoebe Bridgers’ quality. All these features make the single feel unique and exciting, matching that nostalgic feel with a strong contemporary anchor. Maddisun described the track as “very raw and real,” as it showcases her “alt-powerhouse sexy rocker angst”

In the past five years, Maddisun has played over 500 shows. She is a powerhouse in the studio and a force to be reckoned with live. It will be fascinating to see what she does next.

‘Feelin’ It Again’ is a vibrant ode to evocative tribulations, complete with radiant optimism and sincere emotion.

Canadian singer-songwriter Cheyanne Summer masterfully explores contrasting emotions in her latest sonic endeavour, Please.

Cheyanne Summer – Please

Born and raised in Kelowna and now firmly rooted in Calgary, Cheyanne Summer blends country, rock & roll, indie, R&B, and alternative music seamlessly. Her Western Canadian upbringing exposed her to country legends like Garth Brooks and Patsy Cline, as well as a diverse range of musical genres, festival culture, and live performances.

This versatility places her sound in the “undefined” category, seamlessly transitioning from the alternative appeal of her song Circles to the jazz-inflected hip-hop style of iSpy. Notably, Cheyanne is her own agent, promoter, and marketer, successfully securing numerous festival slots and shows—an impressive feat in the music industry. Additionally, she co-founded Peach Jam Records, a label dedicated to her self-released music and fostering a community of creatives.

Exploring themes of loss and strength, Cheyanne’s latest track Please was co-produced by Kenton Dobrowolski and supported by industry veteran Roy Hamilton III, who has collaborated with legends such as Nas and Michael Jackson. Featuring a beautiful piano arpeggio and a weeping guitar, the minimalistic arrangement of this song accentuates its heartfelt message and highlights Cheyanne’s soulful performance.

“Please is a powerful, emotionally charged track that showcases Cheyanne Summer’s talent and depth as an artist.”

With a series of impressive releases, Cheyanne has garnered praise from numerous outlets, including CBC’s Calgary Eyeopener on CBC Radio 1 and over 20 online publications like The Calgary Guardian and 10at10 Calgary. Her music has also received airplay on dozens of radio stations, including The Hitmix 107.5 (UK).

After releasing two EPs, Canadian ensemble Class of 91 has unveiled their latest single, Broken Window. This track showcases the band’s distinctive introspective and personal songwriting style.

Class of 91 – Broken Window

Emerging in 2019 under a DIY ideology, the quartet comprising Ian Ferguson (guitarist/vocalist), Brock Saraul (guitarist), Fred Pantalone Jr (bassist), and Steve Clifford (drummer) braved the challenges of the pandemic to establish themselves.

Their 2020 EP, Eyes on Fire, captured the essence of a world in lockdown, delving into themes of loss, connection, and identity. Following this was Lost Stories in 2022, a second EP produced by Ferguson and Clifford in their Ottawa home studio. This release further refined their fusion of indie, punk, and 90s alternative rock, tackling subjects like mental health, human conflict, and duality.

Fast forward a year, and Class of 91 returns with the compelling track Broken Window, showcasing their emotive lyricism. Delving into the intricacies of relationships, the song narrates the gradual drift between two friends who once shared an unbreakable bond. The authenticity and relatability of this storyline make the piece stand out.

Contrary to expectations, Broken Window is not a sombre ballad; instead, it pulsates with energetic drums and an invigorating riff, creating an immediate foot-tapping banger. Ferguson’s assertive vocals inject a different vibe, especially in the vivid chorus punctuated by an emphatic “hey!”– an invitation for the audience to join in the chant.

“Broken Window is a heartfelt alt-rock powerhouse, maintaining realism and striking emotional songwriting.”

Class of 91 excels in conveying powerful emotions through their engaging storytelling, ensuring their place in your alt-rock playlist. Their live performances are a must-see, making them a band that unquestionably deserves a spot in your musical rotation.
