Showcasing their remarkable versatility once again, the eclectic duo The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara have teamed up with rapper Mr. Meuri for their powerful new single, Bite The Bullet.

The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara Ft Mr. Meuri – Bite The Bullet

Comprised of Daphne Ang from Singapore and Andrea Papi from Italy, The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara (TCOMAS) are known for pushing genre boundaries. Their unique blend of poetry, classical elements, and metal creates a sound that’s anything but conventional.

As previously noted, TCOMAS is known for their inventive approach, crafting impactful messages through complex compositions. Their new track, Bite The Bullet, is no exception. This latest release not only lives up to their reputation but also introduces a fresh layer of creativity to their already impressive catalogue.

Collaborating with the seasoned Italian rapper Mr. Meuri, TCOMAS created their latest track, Bite The Bullet, through a creative partnership aimed at exploring new sonic landscapes. Their success in this venture is evident in the seamless integration of hip-hop elements into the track.

Beginning with a contemporary rap vibe, Mr. Meuri delivers intense, hard-hitting rhymes over a backdrop of powerful beats and rich textures. As the track evolves, distorted guitars introduce an additional layer of aggression, peaking with the raw, wrenching growls. The song reaches its climax as Daphne and Mr. Meuri rap together, concluding with an impressively satisfying and dynamic finish.

Bite The Bullet is an exhilarating and distinctive powerhouse, blending impressive flows with headbanging riffs to create a meticulously crafted banger.

Bite The Bullet not only exemplifies the power of crossover collaborations but also highlights The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara’s exceptional adaptability. Now, all we can do is eagerly anticipate how they will continue to surprise us in the near future.

Calzy uses his unique blend of hip-hop and chilled indie pop as a backdrop to his vulnerable, honest and hopeful lyricism on ‘This Is It’.

Calzy – This Is It

‘This Is It’ wastes no time in catching the listeners’ attention, opening with a funk-inspired charismatic drum beat and tight, groovy bassline, it’s a track that instantly pulls you in and keeps you nodding along almost involuntarily. Calzy immediately demonstrates an admirable quality within his songwriting, which is his openness and desire to be vulnerable in his lyrics whilst still maintaining a dynamic flow within his rapping. This is shown in the first verse, where he opens up about the ‘fences he puts up’ and his tendency to get ‘attached too quickly’ when entering a new relationship.

Coming from the UK coastal town of Eastbourne, Calzy is incredibly good at making music that sounds like sitting with your friends on the beach on a warm summer’s evening. ‘This Is It’ makes for the perfect chilled summer song and it’s easy to imagine the track blasting from a speaker on a hot, sunny day. Its melodic sections are reminiscent of artists such as Easy Life and Still Woozy, whilst the effortless dynamic between rap and melody is a throwback to some of the early Mac Miller songs.

The track comes into its own musically when Calzy explores his more melodic side, contrasting the track’s tight groove with reverb-soaked, jazzy guitars and an absolute earworm of a chorus that will get stuck in your head for days. Calzy proves himself as a dynamic vocalist, being able to effortlessly switch between rapping and singing whilst proving that he’s more than capable when it comes to either. The chorus provides the perfect antidote to the relationship turmoil faced in the verses, with Calzy taking the time to reflect on his worries and realising that ‘it’s your life and you better get used to it, so why don’t you just smile and say that this is it’.

One of the main things that really stands out on ‘This Is It’, is the quality of the track’s production, and the finer details that give the track a strong sense of character such as the subtle ad-libs and sound effects in the verses or the high-pitched background vocals in the chorus. It’s clear Calzy puts just as much emphasis on the overall sound of the track as he does the lyrics and songwriting.

Noc Beteck – ‘NOC (No Other Champion)’

‘Don’t let your past determine your future…’ speaks Noc Beteck in the intro to ‘NOC (No Other Champion)’. It’s a line that sets up the motivational tone of the track, as well as the personal associations for Beteck himself – in his own words, he’s come through hardship but is now trying to ‘redefine the rapper image’, having had a life awakening and finally releasing his music.

Noc Beteck is an independent rap artist based in Maryland, with roots in Cameroon. Having made music since high school, it’s only been recently that he’s begun to share it with the world.

‘NOC (No Other Champion)’ is an anthem for resilience, with a can’t-grind-me-down attitude and a catchy hook.

Beteck’s lyrics become confessional at times, admitting he was ‘a lil youngin with some problems, man I just needed help’, as well as reflecting on hardships, the ‘concrete jungle, these vultures will jump you’. Most of the track tells the classic grind story, having faced ‘the double-crossing’ but surviving, but it gets away with cliche thanks to Beteck’s obvious sincerity. His flow is pleasing, and the chorus with its titular hook is instantly memorable – ‘I done took so many losses, and still, there’s no other champion;

The production utilises some great moody guitar lines, and sharp beats with influences from hip hop, rap, as well as drill and trap. There’s some subby bass and some high countermelodies that could be brought to the front more. However, for rap and hip-hop fans, this is a great positive track that can go on your motivational playlists, and might even accompany a good workout.

  • Moody guitar lines
  • Don’t let your past determine your future
  • Sharp beats with hip-hop and drill/trap influences
  • Confident flow
  • Positive vibes
  • Hooky title and chorus
  • Heartfelt

There is lots to admire from Noc Beteck

Gold Blend ‘Harry’ Tongue-in-cheek rap with genuine skills.

Gold Blend – Harry

‘Not that bad but could be better’ was a line that stood out to me in Gold Blend’s ‘Harry’. Perhaps it was some classic British understatement, perhaps it was poking fun at the typical overconfidence and bravado displayed in rap. But Gold Blend doesn’t underrate his own skills – he compares himself to a wizard on this track’ – and nor should he. This is an exciting British rap talent.

Gold Blend is a British rapper and songwriter, and the self-proclaimed “best rapper in the South West”. With enthusiastic support from the likes of BBC Introducing, it looks like he’ll be bringing us some consistent releases through 2023.

‘Harry’ is a hugely energetic rap track with a wry sense of humour, shouting its own talents while poking fun at itself as well.

The titular hook is incredibly catchy and should be a hit at any live gig – ‘Jump on the beat in the booth and my boys say, This man here is a wizard, Harry, Harry, Harry’. The lyrics feature plenty of British references, making this feel grounded in UK culture – including a reference to Gold Blend’s south-west origins, ‘a seaside land’ full of inhabitants with ‘menthol breath’. There are some enjoyable pop culture references too – ‘Two cool cats like Scat and Thomas O’Malley’ – and some seriously impressive rhymes. The delivery is rapid and energetic, bordering on unhinged – you wonder when on earth he breathes during the track – but it’s tons of fun.

The production is stripped back, focusing on a vaguely mariachi trumpet line and some pulled-back hi-hat beats. It’s designed to let us focus on the rap, and it’s effective in doing that. Fans of rap, particularly British rap and quirkier rap, will love this.

On Owen Kennedy’s latest release, ‘Pothead Pixie’ art-jazz meets rock-rap in swirling self-loathing.

Owen Kennedy – Pothead Pixie (ft. Chef & Tom Waters)

‘Pothead Pixie’ begins with an unnerving, mechanical sound – it could be the distorted sound of a train running past, it could be some alien engine powering up ready to invade. But just when it reaches its climax, it is suddenly replaced by dreamy piano notes. If all of that sounds a bit too much for you, you’d best steer clear of this track.

Owen Kennedy is an art-rock artist from North London, who describes himself as fusing witty jazz with indie rock. On this track, he is also joined by London rapper Chef, and saxophonist Tom Waters.

‘Pothead Pixie’ is a cacophonous genre-blending creation, but once you get past the noise there’s a joyous chaos and an emotional core to it.

‘Give my time back’, Kennedy drawls, to perhaps a troubled lover or even the titular pixie spirit of marijuana. There’s a devastating resignation to it, with Kennedy raising his voice to a plaintive wail, crying ‘Throw your arms down now, she knows’. The track then shifts into a nightmare waltz for Chef’s rap section, carrying on the self-loathing, spitting ‘I can’t believe I messed up, now it’s 2am…stuck in my head’, his voice on the verge of a psychotic rasp. And throughout all of this is Waters’ howling saxophone. It’s quite the experience.

The production uses everything from classically-influenced piano and strings to grand overdriving guitars and saxophone lines with more than a hint of the 1980s. Some may find this too much – at over 5 minutes with a long jam-style outro, it’s a challenge – but many will find it fascinating, particularly fans of such eclectic artists like Rufus Wainwright and David Bowie.

Paying tribute to different cultures and genres, charismatic artist Xcellence! has unveiled the album LEGENDS Of Da Fall, an eclectic 11-track collection guaranteed to get people on their feet.

Xcellence! – LEGENDS Of Da Fall

Hailing from the D.C. Metropolitan area, Xcellence! is a project that could fit under many different genres, yet its eclectic background makes it hard to label. His music is highly influenced by his Caribbean roots, more specifically by Trinidad and Tobago.

SET IT OFF! Ignites this LP on a high note, being a rarity due to not fitting with any of the other offerings here, falling into a more electronic umbrella, and bringing the party to your living room with EDM beats that will make you go full rave mode.

In Where They At 2.0 and UGH!!!, Xcellence showcases his rapping skills, knocking it out of the park with flaming hot rhymes and exuding swag,

Something you will notice through this record is Xcellence’s overall sense of humour, not only present in the lyrics but also in the inventive production choices like in the tracks I Feel Pretty, Twerkin USA, and DrEAMS, songs where this artist takes inspiration from iconic compositions, borrowing specific parts and turning them into irresistible catchy tracks.

I Just Need Tonight takes the cake as the most cheerful melody in this work, its infectious rhythm and magnetic arrangements are the perfect definition of a “dance-inducing” song.

Of course, there couldn’t be humour without a certain level of irreverence, luckily this performer has that base covered in the tracks Hokey Pokey and Let Me See It (Part 1), coming up with some of his most daring songwriting while still maintaining the good vibes.

Space Mountain and I Used To Believe In Love function as another way to exalt the fantastic wordplay that Xcellence is capable of.

LEGENDS Of Da Fall is a fun sonorous ride, balancing catchiness with clever production.

LODF is an oddity in the best way possible, giving the listener many reasons to come back to it, its self-awareness, hypnotizing production, and overall enjoyment put this record in a class of its own.

There is no question about the importance of mental health. But it’s a topic that needs to be talked about more frequently. This line of thought motivated rapper Pook Hustle to display a rare side. His latest single takes a deep dive into this crucial subject.

Pook Hustle – Mental Health

For Brooklyn-based Pook Hustle, not everything has been sold-out shows or critically acclaimed singles. Before the Hustleman could thrive as a performer, life had its fair share of setbacks and harsh experiences, his latest song Mental Health showcases a more serious topic that this artist hopes can inspire others with similar issues.

Taking a different approach than most of his previous deliveries, Mental Health lets us see Pook Hustle in one of his most vulnerable moments, coming up with some of the most heartbreaking rhymes he has crafted so far.

For this jam, The Hustleman narrates some of the rough times he had to endure during a dark chapter in his life, no metaphors, no symbolisms, just the raw and upfront situations he lived, evidenced in aching lines like:

Used to want to save the world

Can’t save myself

So much pain

Nothing helps

Got me going with the flow

My mental health

All this sentiment gets exalted by an up-to-par production that despite the poignancy showcased, manages to maintain a fantastic flow through the entire piece, adorned by back vocal effects that fit like a glove with the theme.

Mental Health is a highly reflective jam, displaying lyrical fragility at its finest.

In the past, Pook Hustle showed his overwhelming production skills, and now in this new tune, he has proved his versatility as a lyricist, excelling at crafting compelling music that comes from the soul. The Hustleman has done it again, demonstrating that even when things get really dark, faith and hope can thrive and create something positive from the ashes.

Showcasing what Detroit is all about, rising rapper Taite shares ‘Here We Go’ his latest track which has already surpassed the million streams mark on Spotify, confirming that the hype around this performer is real.

Taite – Here We Go

Carl Lamar David Taite Jr, simply known as Taite, is an up-and-coming rapper from Detroit with a lot of history. Taite started his career in 2013 with a debut mixtape named My Story, which was an ideal introduction card for this artist. Subsequently, Taite spent the upcoming years releasing material nonstop, including Taite (2015) and Fuck It, Let’s Go (2017).

Proving that he is as real as it gets, Taite doesn’t take any punches back when it comes to his explicit yet captivating rhymes, demonstrating those big streaming numbers are no fluke. Here We Go depicts the swag and grittiness in Detroit and Taite’s deep appreciation for this city.

Aside from the lyrical work, another aspect worth a round of applause is the detailed production, something that Taite takes very seriously with every recording, as he explains in more detail:

I wrote it in 45 minutes and recorded it in less than an hour. I also engineered, mixed, and mastered the song on my own which took about a month. I do that with every record I release, that’s why they all have a special place in my heart. The amount of detail I put in ‘Here We Go’ is subtle but if you throw on some headphones and take the time to listen closely, you can hear why it took me 30 days to completely finish this track.”

Over the years, Taite has displayed a level of consistency that shouldn’t be taken for granted, confirming that hard work is vital for any artist. Singles of this quality are a testament to his evolution as a rapper and a step in the right direction.

Raw and captivating, Here We Go is a perfect ode to the Motor City pouring pure, unfiltered swag.

Currently based in France, Ghanaian Hip-hop artist TightFist has revealed a 7-track LP called The Plug Project, which showcases his best work and collaborations released last year.

TightFist – The Plug Project

TightFist’s story goes back to when he was 14 years old, a period of his life in which he started improving and freestyling just for fun in his native Ghana, always surrounded and influenced by genres such as Afrobeat, Dancehall, and of course, Hip-Hop. At fifteen, he moved to France, a change that further expanded his musical taste.

Over the last couple of years, TightFist has kept himself busy by releasing a generous amount of singles, as well as his 2021 LP, The Art of Variation, and his latest offering, The Plug Project.

The Plug Intro opens this work with a phenomenal production comprised of a dreamy track and guitar lines, which support TightFist’s energetic delivery.

Slip n Slide shares some of the traits mentioned in the previous track while adding beautiful female back vocals in a much more soothing jam featuring the artist known as Negrito, complementing this record with some solid verses in French.

Droptop intertwines its atmospheric instrumental and Tightfist’s killer flow, going back and forth between the melancholic chorus and the hard-hitting rhymes.

Vvs and Language bring back the mixture of English and French hot bars, embellished by trippy vocal effects in an aural conglomerate of mesmerizing sounds.

The album reaches a high point on Hustle, showcasing some of the most assertive and motivational lyrics on this LP.

Finally, Dinero (money in Spanish) displays the innate creativity prevailing throughout this album, with this track having some of its verses in Spanish, including the infectious chorus, in collaboration with the artist Aido.

Straight to the point, The Plug Project delivers on all fronts for an unforgettable Hip-Hop experience.

This work provides a new stage for TightFist, taking what he demonstrated previously and expanding on it with a more polished production and engaging wordplay. Truly an album to be proud of on a professional level.

With his new single ‘Becoming’ multifaceted rapper Jack Dawkins creates detailed, imaginative aural worlds with witty metaphors and a formidable flow.

Jack Dawkins – Becoming

Jack Dawkins is a motivational speaker, rapper, and songwriter from Boulder, Colorado. After studying at Harvard, Jack worked at restaurants, an episode of his life which, according to him, framed his thinking and helped put himself in his listener’s shoes both emotionally and physically while listening to his music.

With such a curious mind, it’s easy to see how Jack draws his knack for creating and narrating. Since his debut, he has built a reputation as an avid storyteller. His love of hip-hop and creative use of the English language is apparent on his newest offering Becoming.

In collaboration with producer Senz, Jack has crafted a wonderful soundscape where his highly imaginative wordplay shines alongside his clever rhymes.

He brought the soundscape, and I crafted the lyrics to fit into this new world. The result feels less like a mashup or hybrid and more like a new genre. We’re just beginning to explore the union, but if this is where it starts, I can’t WAIT to see where it goes.” – said the artist regarding the creative process for this offering.

“Becoming is an out-of-the-box jam, deep and creatively rich.”

With this work, Jack Dawkins has shown a more reflective approach that feels intimate, and yet, its many remarkable lyrical passages evoke a sentiment of universality that many people will find enticing.

Becoming represents a renewed vision and a positive change of gears for this performer. It will be interesting to see where he goes from here.
