Toronto-based artist, Caldher releases his sophomore EP Momentary and urges us to stay present.

Caldher – Momentary

Caldher is carving out his path in the industry with his distinct brand of indie songwriting. Having grown up in a musical environment, he has always been fascinated by different expressions of sound and it’s this love for musical diversity that fuels his passion for music.

Chalder’s music is a captivating cocktail of melancholic lyrics, alt-rock, R&B and jazz inflexions. After nearly two years in the making, Momentary delivers an atmospheric, gritty and expansive soundscape that perfectly carries his sincere vocals. This EP serves as a reminder that life is a web of pain and pleasure, that everything you are feeling will pass eventually and sometimes all we can do is stay present in the moment as much as possible.

Kicking the EP off is ‘Thursday Mess’, an upbeat track with poignant lyrics. It explores the feelings that come with falling in love with someone who doesn’t love you back or have the same relationship goals as you. Despite this, you always end up going back to them and offering them your support whenever it is needed because of your attachment to them. With compelling guitar melodies, dreamy vocals and four on-the-floor drumming, this song will have you up and dancing.

‘Make You Stay’ will have you tapping your foot and nodding your head as you listen along. The energetic instrumentation is quite a contrast to the melancholic lyrics. This track tells a touching tale of a romantic encounter that has happened after a couple of drinks and the questioning that comes along with it of whether it is real feelings or just a result of the effect of the alcohol. Despite this, the writer wants to remain present in the moment in case it doesn’t go any further than that night and just enjoy the person’s presence. This tune is sure to get stuck in your head with the catchy hook “And I’ll keep you in my arms today.”

Unlike the last two tracks on the ‘Momentary’ EP, ‘Not Enough’ is a softer, ballad-type tune with soft lilting piano melodies and lyrics that will be sure to tug on your heartstrings. It dives into the emotions experienced when you start to notice that a relationship is coming to an end and the way that you try to cling to the good moments to give yourself some hope that it will work out eventually. ‘Not enough’ is a song that is sure to bring a tear to your eye as we have all experienced being in a position where we give our everything to someone and they end up walking away. The lyrics are eloquently written by Caldher, painting a vivid picture for the listeners.

‘Constellations’, is a slower track that has a low-fi/indie-pop feel to it. Starting off with just piano before being joined by guitar, synthesizers, drums and bass, the instrumentation is perfectly arranged to compliment and highlight Caldher’s lyrics and the story that he is portraying. This song explores the moment that you realize you are starting to fall for someone and the fear that comes along with it. The lyrics accurately capture the questioning that comes with realizing your feelings for someone and wondering what this means; wondering if this will result in you having your heartbroken or having the connection deepen between you and having it all work out in the end.

Similar to ‘Not Enough’, ‘Eclipse’ is a ballad-styled track with the instrumentation being focussed mostly around the piano at the start, with the feint playing of guitar and bass in the background. Further in the song the arrangement changes to something slightly heavier as a distorted guitar solo becomes front and centre, really changing the energy of the song and adding an interesting dynamic to it. As the song starts to come to a close during the last 40 seconds, the arrangement melts back into the softer, ballad-style sound that we hear at the beginning of the track. This is one of the heavier songs on the Ep, approaching the topic of not being able to manage grief and losing a loved one. The heart-breaking lyrics paint a picture for the listener on how the writer would do anything he could to keep his loved one alive because he knows that once they leave, the heartbreak and agony that comes along with it will not end.

‘Passerby’ is a raw and emotional track, with the recording being slightly rougher than the rest of the tracks on the album to really let the soul of it bleed through. The piano melody is nostalgic and comforting while still tugging on your heart and making you shed a tear. This haunting tune touches on the writer dreaming about the one that he loves every night and how he hates how that person slips away when the morning comes. He dreams of a day where the one he loves is no longer just a part of his dreams, but instead, the one he gets to wake up next to every morning.

‘Momentary’ is an emotional rollercoaster that is incredibly cathartic for listeners. With the mix of poignant lyrics and versatile instrumentation, Caldher has successfully created a world that listeners can get immersed in.

Bad Friends With Black Cats – ‘3 HOURS AND 47 MINUTES’

‘Aw man, my boss is such a jagoff’ sings one of the chorus lines of ‘3 HOURS AND 47 MINUTES’. The title refers to the time left in our narrator’s working day – anyone who has ever worked in a soul-sucking job will relate to the despair, and clock-watching.

Bad Friends With Black Cats describe themselves as a folk-punk-rock duo. Hailing from Toronto, Canada, this track was one of the first songs they ever wrote, and has now been reworked and re-released with their EP ‘I WANT TO MOVE’.

‘3 HOURS AND 47 MINUTES’ is a driving rock track with influences of pop, punk and folk, powered by relatable sucky-job frustrations.

The lyrics echo the thoughts of many in the same situation – “the only time I feel happy is when I’m leaving this place” – but also include some smart imagery with lines describing feeling like ‘a surfer who’s been stranded in the ocean’. The melodies are not quite memorable but contain high energy, with lines ‘god damn, my head’s about to blow off’ seeming ripe for shouting along to. They’re delivered in Paul Harrison’s drawling, conversational yet solid vocal style.

The production combines bright, driving guitars with crashing drums and chiming percussion, adding tuneful riffs and tight harmonies that create a big sound for a duo. There’s clear influences of late 90s and early 2000s pop punk, as well as artists like The La’s, The Front Bottoms and Weezer. It’s a track with a lot of character that shows a lot of promise for the forthcoming EP.

wingspeak – Right Here

‘Right Here’ delivers exactly what you want it to, and so much more! wingspeak, aka. Bianca hailing from Toronto is quite simply flourishing and spreading her wings as she explores her unapologetic passion for music. Continuously delivering catchy pop-rock tracks, you are truly whisked away into nostalgic beats reminiscent of those from throughout the decades.

Her latest single ‘Right Here’ continues this delightful thread by taking us on a trip to the noughties, having been proclaimed as “inspired by 2000’s radio rock” and we are here for it. We are embraced with guitars and a subtle but catchy melody that immediately gets the head banging and the feet tapping. And this is wrapped up with a bow when topped off with wingspeak’s honey-sweet and smooth vocals.

‘Right Here’ is a catchy, nostalgic, fun fest that you can’t help but have on repeat.

The prominent beat enhances the vibe so that you can totally imagine ‘Right Here’ being featured on the aforementioned 2000’s radio. You can hear the influences and throwback hints of prominent artists such as Sum 41 and Avril Lavigne radiating through this track, and it comes together like bread and butter.

There’s a soft teen angst impression that echoes through which only adds to the radio rock feel. wingspeak describes ‘Right Here’ as someone being “stubborn about moving on from a person who doesn’t even reciprocate what you feel,” which bolsters that vibe.

‘Right Here’ feels like a throwback but injects a fresh charm that keeps you engaged. Quite simply, you need to listen to ‘Right Here’, right now.

Bringing the best out of three worlds, producer Boom Dice has gathered a formidable squad of artists, teaming up with Avie Sheck and Lil Esso for a smooth R&B jam called Show Me More in what feels like a match made in heaven.

Boom Dice & Avie Sheck Ft. Lil Esso – ‘Show Me More’

Boom Dice is a multi-Grammy-nominated / BRIT award-winning producer, songwriter, and artist from Toronto. His vast and formidable curriculum includes collaborations with icons such as Jay Z, Disclosure, John Newman, and Sofi Tukker, among many more.

Aside from the millions of streams achieved, he has also received several awards, including gold and platinum certifications.

On this occasion, he has chosen to work with singer Avie Sheck and the rapper Lil Esso for his newest offering, Show Me More.

Los Angeles-based Avie Sheck is a performer with influences from Nu Metal to Hip-hop and R&B. His versatile vocal range and captivating live shows have made him an upcoming act worth keeping an eye on.

The last element of this musical equation is Lil Esso, a Canadian rapper with three and a half years of experience creating and mixing his own work. Since day one, he has demonstrated to possess an innate talent that has made some heads turn, including Boom Dice himself.

Following some unsuccessful attempts, Boom Dice found in Avie and Lil Esso the ideal accompaniment for this stunning musical work, as he explains:

After trying a number of times with artists that just didn’t bring the track to life, I would say my inspiration was to prove a point that you don’t have to give up on a piece of music and that it will always find the right home in the end. It is a lesson I have always told artists I work with and it is proven time after time in my day-to-day output.”

As soon as the song starts, Avie’s light and energetic vocals become the focal point, adding an extra flair to Boom’s smooth production, which consists of minimal beats and layered effects. Setting the stage for Lil Esso to show up and spit some hot bars, this conjunct effort results in a jammer overflowed with sensuality and swag.

Show Me More is a delightful tune, succeeding thanks to its stellar production and vibrant performances.

Boom Dice’s experience as a top-tier producer is more than evident in this gem, not only in the studio but also at the time of choosing his coworkers. Elegantly alluring and provocative, this is a piece that you won’t be able to forget.

With a seriously impressive sense of melody and a clear grasp of her own desires in the music-making process, wingspeak soars with a debut EP packed with promise.

wingspeak- ‘College St.’

The Toronto-based Bianca Pocpoc (wingspeak) has accomplished a lot on this first foray into music. With a variety of different instruments on display- from guitar to Harmonica and beyond- she makes the most of the EP’s short 17-minute runtime to uplift and inspire.

With many of the songs written between 2013-2019 and then recorded through 2021/22, there is a variance from track to track that keeps the listener interested throughout. Opening with the stripped-back ‘Center Stage’, Bianca shows a dedication to sun-touched melodies that brighten with each new entry.  Her declaration that she “clearly knows (her) place/ anywhere but center stage” belies an underlying anxiety that can easily be put to rest. Bianca has already made a strong argument as to why she belongs in centre stage through the pure strength of this EP alone.

While ‘Walk on Water’ offers an effective if not often used analogy on keeping oneself afloat while understanding their own limitations, the one-two punch of ‘Unexpected Song’ and ‘Into the Void’ are the heart of this release. While entirely different in premise and performance, the clean production and transcendent hooks of both best capture the bright path Bianca has ahead of her.

“There is a variance from track to track that keeps the listener interested throughout.”

The lyrics of ‘Unexpected Song’ address a sense of containment- with Bianca asserting that “tension keeps building like a Storm”, with the resulting repetition of daily life leaving her “feeling torn”.  ‘Into the Void’ in contrast feels like a release from the previous track’s built-up pressure. Bianca declares that while “the stars are dead”, they still continue to shine and offer hope that we “could conquer all that there is”; be that love, monsters or the void itself.

The last track ‘between us’ ties together many of the lyrical references found throughout, bringing the project to its conclusion. The line “the starry sky is all that you have” and references to “sailing across the seas” and “diving underneath” the waves to hide are particularly evocative of ‘Walk on Water’ and ‘Into the Void’. As the track draws to a close, Bianca unifies the themes of the project into one final rallying cry: that she’s “not going down without a fight”. With all the promise present across ‘College St.’, this is the best message any fan could hope to hear.

Aishvan releases his second single ‘Start Over’ and sets off on a nu-disco path embracing a more optimistic attitude.

Aishvan – Start Over

After a haunting urban noir debut with his lead single, I Gotta Go, Toronto singer and composer Aishvan decided to reintroduce his upcoming album to the world with a follow-up that signals an official change in direction.

Start Over officially resets the project in sound and attitude, taking a much more dance-oriented road with an enticing nu-disco beat and sporting lyrics that, instead of dwelling on resentment, opt to gather the shards of shattered love and try to re-write what could have been a success story from the beginning.

“Smooth textures and optimistic vibes.”

If calling the new sound “happy” would be a bit of an overstatement, the atmosphere now exudes hope for a bright future that might just be lurking around the corner. “So how ‘bout we just take it slow this time?”, asks our ever-besotted hero, trusting their newfound maturity to guide them.

The electronic, retro-futuristic sound is a showstopper and fills the room with its smooth textures and optimistic (albeit still slightly melancholic) vibes. Aishvan’s vocal prowess really gets to glare in the chorus, which his falsettos bring to life filtered through the slight distortion that endows his performance with a metallic gleam.

Representing his loved one, Mriis steps into the song after the first chorus and expresses their shared feeling of nostalgia and yearning for each other. “Been a minute since you/Loved on me touched on me (…) And I don’t want no distance between us/Want our worlds to collide”, she confesses. Perhaps in order to stay true to the more carnal nature of her verses, the girl’s voice is kept rawer.

After this surprising release, one is left excited for the upcoming album ‘None of This Was Easy’, which is out on 19 August with third single Been Away due on the 12th. Aishvan himself states that he has decided to make the song’s message a metaphor for the whole project and change its direction to bring it closer to Start over. Nothing to say, apart from: more power to him!

Aishvan has been singing since the age of three and has been a songwriter since he was 14. He approaches music in an extremely personal manner and claims it has “saved my life more than once”.

Jason Maxwell has released his newest offering ‘For Now’ a heartbreaking story of a personal experience, translated splendidly into two and a half minutes of pure unfiltered Country-Pop excellence, all driven by his natural charisma and engaging storytelling ability.

Jason Maxwell – ‘For Now’

Toronto ON native Jason Maxwell is a singer-songwriter with a reputation that keeps growing and growing. Over the last few years, he has gained recognition, not only from fans but also from different specialized media, being featured in a vast number of playlists such as Spotify’s Country Favourites & Live Country playlists, Apple Music’s New Music Daily, and Amazon Music’s Breakthrough Country, just to name a few.

For Now, is a delightfully contrasting track. This personal story will echo with all the broken hearts out there.

Despite his youth and relatively short career, Jason has accomplished significant accolades, for example, reaching the not-so-modest quantity of +1.5 million digital streams. On top of that, having his track Girls Like to Dance as part of the soundtrack to the Netflix film Full Out 2: You Got This! and also performing in the movie.

His most recent delivery For Now is a heartfelt Country-Pop tune that illustrates the tragic outcome of his last relationship and the realization of letting go of a love that just wasn’t meant to be, despite how difficult it could be to accept.

Jason’s soothing vocals and the joyful instrumentation contrast with the tear-jerking lyrics in a fascinating way, giving, as a result, one of the most compelling country tunes you will hear this year.

For Now is a fantastic addition to Jason’s rock-solid catalogue, bringing back his well-known lyrical frankness, always open-minded and never afraid to show his vulnerable side. This sincerity has allowed him to stay consistently strong with every release.

Prepared for the release of his upcoming third studio album, Tropicon Island, ‘Back to You’ is the second instalment of his future chapter that offers a tale of the ups and downs of new love. Doused in aspects of infectious afro-pop with hooking R&B, the genre-bending sound is dynamic yet weaves between the enhancing lyrics to overall give listeners an experience found nowhere else.

Speaking of the story of the track, Lexxicon noted:

‘REASONS’ is the brand new single from Toronto rap aficionado Charlie Noiir, produced by Alexander Tribe, this ferocious and forthright alternative hip-hop number fuses head-bopping trap beats with a deep, driving bassline that perfectly complements the gritty and unfiltered lyricism present throughout the track.

Charlie Noiir – Reasons

Based on the idea of standing for something or dying for nothing, ‘REASONS’ is a call to arms for everybody out there to stick to their principles and live by a code of honour, something which Charlie Noiir believes is gravely lacking from his generation.

“This music is therapy for me but along the way I found out how to get shit off my chest but do it with extraordinary songwriting. I take pride in that… If anything I hope the record gives people confidence, hell even a slight arrogance like yeah this is me, I ain’t backing down, I’m coming for mine. Everyone gotta have that energy and attack each day with it but also have fun cause life is short and we back outside…”

Released just in time for the reopening of the outside world, ‘REASONS’ embodies the self-assured, vibrant magnetism that Charlie is known and loved for. From the direct piece-to-camera shots in the Tyler Roussel directed music video to the chest-thumping braggadocio ever-present in the lyrics, ‘REASONS’ is Charlie Noiir at his most honest and unfiltered.
