Welcome to the Music Review Mixtape. In this feature, RCM staff writer Javier Rodriguez provides a round-up of the best new music submitted to our website. Today he introduces 5 new artists, with a short, snackable music review.

Empty Machines ‘Luna’

What started as a solo project from the hand of Thomas Crawford eventually became a duet with the inclusion of the talented singer Jodie Helena, resulting in this formidable project from Glasgow, Scotland, known as Empty Machines.

Like many other independent bands, this duo takes pride in their DIY approach, being a group that writes, records and mixes all their music at their home studio. Naturally, this has granted them more control over their creative process and this is evident in their official debut track Luna.

This piece starts as a surreal ambient song with electronic arrangements and Jodie’s mesmerizing voice establishing an immersive atmosphere. Eventually, this composition escalates into a more vivid and energetic sonic journey that invades your senses. By the end, this ambitious build-up culminates spectacularly, leaving you with a highly satisfying sensation of relief.

Luna is a strong debut, as well as a very interesting one, the start of something both promising and admirable.

Cypher Unknown – State of Emergency

Nottingham-based Cypher Unknown has come a long way. Following the release of his self-titled EP in 2020, this artist’s output has been on an upward curve, refining his wordplay and showcasing some of his most polished work in recent memory. Such is the case for the single State Of Emergency, a collaborative track with fellow artists DUKE01 and Lethargy.

With lyrics depicting the deceitful behaviour of politicians, State Of Emergency combines the aggressiveness of hardcore punk with well-thought-out verses.

The intense delivery recalls the 90s hip-hop underground scene, almost shouting rhymes in the most explicit way possible, which grants a lot of value to the social commentary of this jam.

State Of Emergency is part of Crisis Point, Cypher Unknown’s debut album, released on June 25th, an LP that hip-hop heads should not miss.

Macy – ‘Shoulders Back’

Following a marvellous streak of accomplishments, including more than one million plays on streaming services, the release of her critically acclaimed EP Words4Luv, and multiple live shows all over the UK, Abertillery native Macy continues to prove her versatility as an artist with the launch of the assertively catchy track Shoulders Back.

Embellished by its driving beat and euphoric presentation, this melody is the perfect canvas to showcase Macy’s tender voice. Additionally, its top-notch production is bold and intense, conveying its empowering lyrics flawlessly, making Shoulders Back a strong candidate for your next favourite summer tune.

Still with more music to share, including a new EP this summer, Macy is determined to make the rest of this year even more impressive than the previous one. So you better prepare to lose yourself in this absorbing, delightful pop ride.

Chris Carbon – ‘OnlyFans’

After recently quitting a career in science to pursue his artistic dreams, Australian-English singer, songwriter, and producer Chris Carbon is here making his debut with the composition OnlyFans.

With his first official single, Chris has demonstrated his skills as a compelling storyteller. The track depicts the real-life story of a mum who after a divorce, quits her job at corporate banking to start creating adult content, leading her to invest in the property market, which changed her life for the better.

Songwriting-wise, the tune challenges the taboos and negative stigmas around women who make a living from these platforms.

Luckily, the song also delivers instrumentally, accompanying these engaging lyrics with a guitar riff as spicy as the website it refers to, emphasizing Chris’s playful vocal work even more. This impeccable balance of wholesome writing and flavoursome production makes Onlyfans an absolute treat for your ears.

Chris Carbon has made a strong statement with his launch song, showing that he isn’t afraid to speak his mind on controversial topics and is a genuine, soulful songwriter.

Kat King ‘Baby Talk’

What started with a 2nd grader in a small town in Kansas eventually evolved into one of the most thrilling up-and-coming bands in the KC area.

Since the early age of fourteen, Kat has released plenty of material, including a 13-track album and three EPs, leaving no doubt about her passion and undisputed talent for making music.

Now as a five-piece with a good amount of experience under their belts, Kat King are preparing for their next record with the launch of the single Baby Talk.

One of the things that makes Baby Talk so important is that this tune is the first from their catalogue to be openly and unapologetically queer, drawing inspiration from a real-life romance.

Beautifully crafted, Baby Talk combines Kat’s saccharine vocals with gentle guitar strums and pulsating drums, conveying a sweet story that will put a smile on your face.

This song is the lead single of Kat King’s forthcoming EP Domestic Bliss, a work that in her own words: “juxtaposes how concepts of home and queer partnership can represent a safe haven while also being a source of anxiety living in an oppressive world.”

Welcome to the Music Review Mixtape. In this feature, RCM staff writer Javier Rodriguez provides a round-up of the best new music submitted to our website. Today he introduces 5 new artists, with a short, snackable music review.

Heavy On The Heart – ‘Mr. Know It All’

Hailing from Long Island, NY, Heavy On The Heart are an alternative rock quartet that made their live debut in January. Opening for The Color Fred and Alex Melton, they played to a sold-out crowd, at The Shakers in Oakdale.

Drawing influence from artists such as Third Eye Blind, Paramore, The Dangerous Summer, and Hot Mulligan, HOTH carries the alt-rock flag with pride, offering a style as diverse as the bands they admire.

For their debut track, Mr. Know It All, this four-piece goes full force with a heavily charged nostalgic sound, with crushing drums and explosive riffs, intertwining with lead singer Nikki Brady’s intense vocal work, reminiscing of the late 90s and early 2000s alternative rock sound.

Aside from this tune, HOTH will release two more singles over the upcoming months, preparing everything for the release of their debut record ‘It’s You That Needs To Think’ in September 2023.

Circle The Wolves – ‘2000 Pieces’

Keeping the decibels loud and strident, next up we have Circle The Wolves, a goth metal band from Canada. They mix the intricate structures of classical music with all the unbridled power that metal can offer, taking the listener through a dynamic sonic voyage.

After previous, including covers of Avril Lavigne and Sia, Circle The Wolves are determined to keep evolving and taking their musicianship to the next level, and this is clearly on show in exhibited in 2000 Pieces.

Combining mesmerizing vocal delivery with poignant guitar chords, 2000 Pieces escalates into a smashing chorus, where the mournful lyrics blend spectacularly with the instrumentation, functioning as an ideal balance of well-rounded songwriting and stellar production.

Not a band to rest on their laurels, this group is currently working on what will be their sophomore album, confirming they won’t stop making great music anytime soon.

House Of Figs ‘Shiny Red Cuts’

After a three-year hiatus, Fort Worth, Texas, alternative trio House Of Figs has made a long-awaited return to the music scene, looking to bring back their highly infectious sound to the masses. In 2020 they had a very admirable debut, with the tracks ‘Alright With Me’ and ‘Forest Fire’ amassing thousands of plays, a feat they’re already repeating with their comeback single Shiny Red Cuts.

Tailor-made for the summer, Shiny Red Cuts is the danceable alt-pop tune you’ve been waiting for! Introducing contagious hooks, playful lyrics, and flawless performance, everything about this tune feels like an invitation for a good time.

But this return is not limited to just one song because House Of Figs have assured us there is not one, not two, but five more singles on the horizon! They are expected to be shared in the upcoming months, along with plans for booking local shows once more, this triplet is back and their time is now.

Vonum – ‘Lay Down Your Umbrella’

The best way to describe this band from Manchester (and Athens) would be as the auditive crossroad where classic and modern rock meet. Vonum has a sound that can appeal to audiences of all ages due to the cocktail of influences in it, which fluctuates between blues, funk, rock, and indie.

Inspired by a conversation that the lead singer had with a friend, the phrase “Lay Down Your Umbrella” is basically another way to say you should allow your feelings to take over, and despite some people saying otherwise, it’s ok to cry, it’s ok to feel vulnerable once in a while and decompress when you need it, all for the sake of mental health.

But its subject is not the only motivational thing about this melody, LDYU also showcases top-notch instrumentation, starting with a drum beat made for a big audience clapping to its awe-inspiring rhythm, followed by an irresistible strumming almost begging to be played at a big stadium.

Engaging songwriting, catchy production, and a passion for crafting quality music make Vonum significant in Manchester’s ever-growing indie landscape.

AstroNutz – ‘Toy’

Continuing the pattern of their previous two releases, Toy is another display of fun, pop-punk from Almere-based AstroNutz, a band that knows how to get the crowd going.

Often compared to the likes of Green Day, All American Rejects, and Blink 182 this four-piece has all the ingredients to become a favourite on your playlist.

Highly energetic, upbeat, and pouring good vibes, Toy is a recording that will appeal to old and young fans alike due to its timeless formula, capturing the essence of this beloved subgenre that not too long ago saw a mainstream revival. Consisting of fast-paced distorted guitars, pulsating drums, and irresistible hooks, Toy cuts straight to the chase, as most punk tracks do.

As you’re reading this, AstroNutz are hard at work on their debut album, which is set for release by the end of 2023.

Welcome to the Music Review Mixtape. In this feature, RCM staff writer Javier Rodriguez provides a round-up of the best new music submitted to our website. Today he introduces 6 new artists, with a short, snackable music review.

Elizmi Haze ‘That Guy’

Elizmi is more than just another talented singer, she is also a dedicated mental health advocate fueled by a strong desire to help and inspire young women all over the globe.

Her formative years in Spain have played a crucial role in her love for music, allowing her to draw influence from this country’s beautiful culture. Her latest release, That Guy, carries a new and exciting sound while keeping her empowering lyricism completely intact.

In the catchiest way possible, Elizmi Haze has perfectly captured the essence of someone suffering due to a lack of loyalty and respect from a significant other and the realization of this person’s true colours, followed by the feeling of liberation that brings.

Presenting some fascinating production choices, this track begins with dazzling vocal effects and sublime piano parts, followed by Elizmi’s powerful voice, which drips with emotional anguish that is almost palpable, all meticulously balanced and complementing each other spectacularly.

With several awards and nominations on her curriculum, this bopper strongly indicates there will be more accolades for Elizmi.

TELUS – ‘Apart’

Channelling the melancholy and reflective nature of post-punk, Danish band Telus pays homage to this subgenre while giving it a fresh, modern twist, aiming to immerse the listener through intense performances of pure, unfiltered emotion, finding the midpoint between beauty and ugliness.

With heartbreaking lyrics depicting the inevitable downfall of a relationship from the perspective of the two parties involved with opposite intentions, their latest single, Apart, evokes feelings of aching and despair.

Soaked in reverberating energy, the first chords draw you in with their innate and engaging poignancy, escalating towards a frenetic chorus where the soaring vocals, high-energy drums, and pulsating bass prevail, successfully transmitting the enticing coldness that makes post-punk so engaging.

Apart marks the first step towards the impending release of Telus’s debut EP, Love Songs For Strangers, and if that record is half as good as this melody, then we are up for a treat.

White House Down – ‘On The Edge Of Dreaming’

Hailing from a small village hall in Faulkland, Somerset, White House Down has a history that started over ten years ago, with these five musicians having a lot of experience playing in other bands and many different projects in the past, something that explains their efficiency and solid reputation as a highly entertaining band.

Their third official release, On The Edge Of Dreaming, is another piece of introspective songwriting by the hand of the skilled lead singer Tom Hunt, successfully capturing the emotions of a specific period in time.

Like a gentle breeze on a warm summer night, OTEOD brings a comforting atmosphere with a soothing instrumentation that takes you by the hand through a gratifying sonic barrage, with melancholy-charged guitar riffs and Tom’s tender vocals leading the way.

The sheer lyrical intimacy and the satisfying performance make White House Down a rising act worth considering to keep on rotation on your favourite streaming service.

Wuzy Bambussy – ‘Uncharted’

Wuzy Bambussy is the moniker of Nikolai Jones, a producer, and multi-instrumentalist from the West Country in England with a hard-to-define sound thanks to its eclectic nature.

While Nikolai has collaborated with many great artists in his career, since March 2023, he found his perfect match in Bristol’s songstress Kat Harrison, combining Nikolai’s production mastery with Kat’s undeniable singing prowess.

After two well-received singles, their newest musical venture Uncharted is proof of the great chemistry between these two artists.

Driven by Kat’s alluring voice, this piece is a delightfully dark serenade with mesmerizing elements, including its graceful piano segments and sombre organs, crafting something only possible to describe as “wickedly fun and catchy”.

And if three singles are not enough for you, then we have great news due to this duo promising to deliver a new song every month for the rest of the year, so you better get ready because the best is still yet to come from Wuzy Bambussy.

Gonçalo Santana – ‘Too Soon’

Originally from Portugal but currently residing in Switzerland, Gonçalo Santana is a singer, songwriter, and producer who discovered music was his passion from a young age. The credit for this early exposure goes to his father, who introduced him to many artists, such as Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, and Prince, to name a few.

After an EP and some releases, including his 2022 melody ‘Verity’ (which has over 20’000 streams on Spotify), Gonçalo is back once more, and this time is with a seductive dance floor anthem called Too Soon.

Adorned by some of the most contagious Latin rhythms and arrangements you could hear, Too Soon is a colourful display of pop brilliance, taking advantage of Gonçalo’s thin and playful voice for an irresistible track that evidences this singer’s appeal as a performer.

With each delivery, this artist continues to go from strength to strength, demonstrating the big numbers on Verity were no coincidence.

Welcome to the Music Review Mixtape. In this feature, RCM staff writer Javier Rodriguez provides a round-up of the best new music submitted to our website. Today he introduces 9 new artists, with a short, snackable music review.

Viatr ‘Queue The Dreams’

Making their debut, London-based quartet Viatr has an interesting story behind them. Being a band consisting of members who are originally from four different countries, their sound is a mix as eclectic as their unique background, combining rock, jazz, and classical music with experimental arrangements, giving birth to a sonic cascade that will shock audiences, and there couldn’t be a better example of this than their first official single Queue The Dreams.

Depicting dreamy sequences of surreal and distant soundscapes, QTD can be dissected like a two-part act. First, the soothing chords and comforting vocals of lead singer Diana Opiela create a wholesome experience of ethereal wonders, and halfway through it, the composition diverges into a faster and chaotic piece, mesmerizing as it gets and with a highly cathartic close.

As an introductory card, Queue The Dreams does a formidable job, and it definitely makes us impatient to hear what this band will do next.

Brianna Scully ‘Haunted’

Born and raised in South Florida, Brianna Scully’s unquestionable talent was a well-kept secret for a long time, however, this would change when the pandemic hit, giving her a significant amount of free time to practice piano and improve her songwriting skills. Encouraged by her friends and family, Brianna decided to start putting her music out there, afterward, she moved to Los Angeles, where she met the producer Brandon Lew, who helped her to take her writing to a whole new level.

Proving that real-life experiences can be the ultimate source of creativity, Brianna’s new single, Haunted, is without a doubt the most lyrically honest tune she has made so far, taking inspiration from the inability of not being able to move on from a previous relationship.

Summarized in three key points, Haunted thrives thanks to the subtle yet effective production, its endearing performance, and Brianna’s impactful storytelling.

Haunted is the second single from Brianna’s debut EP Manic, set for release next fall, a work that you should definitely keep an eye on.

Forgotten Tides – ‘Never Built To Last’

Formed just last year and coming from Aberdeen in Scotland, Never Built To Last is the debut from Forgotten Tides, a four-piece with clear goals in mind, hoping to make a profound connection with their ever-growing fanbase and share their art with audiences all over the world.

Aside from being their first single, Never Built To Last is also the epitome of what this band brings to the table. NBTL perfectly describes the impermanence of life through the perspective of a relationship, highlighting the importance of enjoying every moment. This soulful subject is complemented by the refreshing instrumentation, going from melancholic guitar passages early in the song to a breathtaking and energetic chorus. Worth mentioning is the wild guitar solo toward the end.

We can’t think of a better way to launch than with a song like this one. This Scottish outfit has crafted a solid tune with “mainstream appeal”. Hopefully, it won’t be long until we hear from them again.

Mara Liddle – ‘Oversharing’

Paving the way for her anticipated EP Stalemate, Mara Liddle shared another little gem from that record called Oversharing, a piece that narrates Mara’s attempts to forge friendships during her early adulthood as well as the complications regarding the concept of ‘oversharing’. Carried single-handedly by Mara’s sugar-coated delivery, this song pours catchiness, elevated by its uplifting production and auto-tuned soaked vocals.

Since last year, Mara Liddle has dazzled listeners with her intimate songwriting and well-rounded arrangements, delivering riveting results due to her distinctive ability to balance realistic situations with an approachable sound and her unique flair.

In collaboration with producer JB Thomas, Mara’s first EP is just one of the many milestones she’s aiming to achieve this year. With plenty of performances on the horizon and already championed by BBC Introducing’s ‘Big in 2023’ it’s safe to say the time for Mara Liddle is now.

Redpath Traffic – ‘So Alive’

Here is a little riddle for you all, what do you get when you mix the elegance of blues, the boldness of punk, and the eternal likability of rock? The answer is Redpath Traffic, a trio hailing from Toronto, Canada, comprised of Rick Todd (guitar and vocals), Marc Fernley (bass), and Kerem Balci (drums), together they work as a well-oiled machine looking to share stories of love, loss, and the many incidences of life, splendidly spiced with some superb musicianship.

Out of the many elements present in this melody, like the soaring vocals and lively drums, the intricate guitar passages are the definitive showstopper, succeeding at evoking a feeling of overwhelming freedom, and while it might sound a bit redundant to say it, it does make you feel “so alive” truly exhibiting the expertise of these three outstanding musicians.

This track is part of Redpath Traffic’s debut album, Under The Crimson Sun, a record produced by the iconic Chris Birkett. (Led Zeppelin, Dexys Midnight Runners, Hans Zimmer; Randy Newman, Def Leopard).

Discover more from Redpath Traffic

Zhaklina – ‘Game Over’

Hailing from New York and of Albanian, Irish, and Greek descent, Zhaklina has always been interested in creating awareness on many social issues like mental health and suicide prevention. Her altruistic desire plays a meaningful role in her music, which is not only a form of expression but also an outlet she hopes her fans can find solace in, and her latest offering, Game Over, is no exception. Featuring the post-hardcore band Hollow Wake, Game Over talks about battling shame and realizing this negative sentiment depends on us and how much power we give it.

Typically labelled as alternative pop, this tune takes a considerable detour from her usual style, starting with Zhaklina’s mesmerizing voice and a gorgeous piano rendition, making it look like this is going to be another alt-pop piece, however, as soon as the guitar comes into play, you know you’re in for a different type of aural ride, and just like the early moments of a roller-coaster before the inevitable drop, Game Over quickly evolves into an aggressive post-hardcore banger, with smashing drums and screamy vocals taking over, forming a fascinating contrast between these components.

If there is a track in this mixtape that will fulfil all your needs for head-banging and soulful songwriting, it’s this one!

Discover more from Zhaklina

Whate – ‘Brainman’

We shout about making the world a better place” is the motto of UK’s Whate, a project conceived in 2016. Even though this group only has released two singles in their fledgling career, they have already played numerous times at venues all over Birmingham, such as The 02 Institute, The Dark Horse, The Victoria, Sunflower Lounge, and Actress & Bishop, among many others.

At this point, you might be wondering, who is Brainman? You will be surprised to discover he is a superhero in a never-ending crusade against ignorance, always encouraging people to keep fighting.

Naturally, with such inspiring storytelling comes a single that is on pair with it, vocalist Dave Dreamer with his solemn and almost ominous delivery, in conjunction with the fast-paced instrumentation, develops a sense of urgency that prevails throughout most of the song, reaching a powerful climax during its Muse-esque influenced guitar work.

Brainman and the previous track, Can’t Breathe Anymore, will be part of this band’s forthcoming album Open Field, which contains 11 songs and demos.

Ronniee ‘Make My Mind’

Combining unapologetic lyricism with some lovely British charm, Ronniee is the pop artist you didn’t know you needed in your playlists. Her career started in 2012 when she wrote a song for the One Direction tribute band Only One Direction, a melody that did pretty well and got played on their UK tour. After that, her career took off, leading her to write and release music for other artists and perform at venues like Ronnie Scotts and London’s 02.

As the title might imply, Make My Mind questions whether to move on from a relationship due to the red flags or if those precious moments are strong enough to make you stay.

Driven by nothing but this artist’s soothing voice and a majestic piano, she truly excels at conveying the powerful emotion within this tune, reaching a glorious crescendo where Ronniee pours her heart out with an unbridled passionate performance.

With more than 6000 monthly listeners on Spotify and several features on BBC Introducing, Ronniee has made clear that she is nowhere near reaching her peak, and with more material to deliver for the rest of 2023, all signs point to a hell of a year for this rising artist.

Discover more from Ronniee

Infinite Corners – ‘Bombs’

To close this magnificent round-up of exciting new artists, we got Infinite Corners, a three-piece from Leeds with an eclectic sound. If we wanted to get a little too specific, we could say this band is the intersection where post-punk, psychedelic rock, and alternative rock meet, and as unbelievable as this amalgamation might sound, the truth is that this outfit has found the perfect formula to mix these genres into a highly compelling musical style.

To the beat of a stomping rhythm section and one of the most irresistible hooks you will hear in a while, Bombs comes as a cohesive track with nice pacing. Halfway through, there is a softer intermediate section where the lead singer Ben Holliday exhibits his vocal capabilities, reaching some soothing tones and returning to the foot-tapping riffage that makes this melody viciously catchy while lyrically describing what it is to live with someone struggling with mental health issues.

Their wide range of influences, on top of their performance efficiency, makes Infinite Corners a mandatory listen for any indie rock enthusiasts.

Welcome to the Music Review Mixtape. In this feature, RCM staff writer Javier Rodriguez provides a round-up of the best new music submitted to our website. Today he introduces 6 new artists, with a short, snackable music review.

Mark Docherty – Saying Goodbye

Hailing from Barrow in Furness, Cumbria, Mark Docherty is an artist with plenty of experience and deep knowledge of the music industry. After many years of cutting his teeth by performing in several projects all over the UK, a series of events (including the pandemic) put a halt to his previous band Hari Debi.

Now with things back to normal and more motivated than ever, Mark is back on track, this time on his own and ready to continue his artistic journey. Saying Goodbye marks the return of this skilled musician, with the first single from his upcoming album Reckless Abandon, set for release later this year.

Even though the lyrics could apply exclusively to a relationship, the truth is that Saying Goodbye is overall more universal than it seems, reflecting on that wonderful feeling when you discover how strong you are, saying goodbye to an unsatisfying job, to a toxic friend, etc. This encouraging theme is flawlessly delivered thanks to Mark’s velvet voice and the gentle guitar strums, making this piece an unforgettable aural experience.

Shipwrecker – Pretty Face

What originally started as a one-off side project by guitarist Jo Barnes eventually became one of the most promising up-and-coming bands from Liverpool. Shipwrecker is the name of this four-piece that has released two EPs, each with the noteworthy feat of being recorded and released in just one week (2017 and 2019, respectively).

And as if this wasn’t impressive enough, 2019 was the year in which this outfit played their first live show to a sold-out crowd in their hometown at the Kazimier Stockroom in Liverpool.

Fully charged with a mixture of 90s alternative and classic rock, their newest offering Pretty Face is an explosively catchy banger about superficiality and human weaknesses, featuring wild riffs and a mesmerizing rhythm section that will blow up your speakers with its danceable grooves.

Due to their astonishing musicianship, Shipwrecker is a must-listen for any Alternative Rock enthusiast. This is a shipwreck you won’t regret being part of.

Sam & The Engineers – Entropy March

Formed in 2019, Italian trio Sam & The Engineers started playing small gigs in Ortigia and Eastern Sicily, making a name for themselves in the underground music scene.

Following the warm reception to their debut single, Breakable, and a sold-out show at their hometown in Syracuse, this group is ready to take the next step with the song Entropy March, which is a track that encapsulates feelings of disorientation and loneliness, lyrically linked to the vast entropy of the universe.

Right off the bat, the song creates an ethereal and mysterious atmosphere with its soft penned piano evoking the endless void that represents the universe perfectly fitting with the existentialist themes. Sam’s soothing lyrical display provides this piece with a sense of vulnerability, combined with a heart-wrenching guitar solo and a mind-boggling monologue.

For just their second single, this group have ‘engineered’ a fabulous melody that hits all the boxes for an unforgettable rock track.

Aaron Elvis – Supersonic

Although he resides in Sydney, Australia, Aaron was born on the beautiful island of Oahu in Hawaii. CMON CMON – The Summers We Missed

The Belgian trio currently known as CMON CMON is certainly not “new” in the strict sense of the word, being a band formed decades ago but who decided to reunite in 2019. Now with a renewed vision, a new name, and different goals in mind, the one factor that remains the same after all these years is their love for music.

Throughout 2022, this group achieved great things, including a collaboration with the Grammy award nominee Alex Newport and worldwide airplay for the track The Summers We Missed.

Inspired by the real-life experiences of lead singer Jorrit Hermans, TSWM tells a story of what could’ve been, from the perspective of two teenagers who were close but never romantically involved, just to reunite many years later wondering “what if”.

Such a touching narration goes hand in hand with the jangling guitars and the endearing lyrics, exhibiting the expertise of these musicians.

Due to its absorbing theme and top-notch instrumentation, The Summers We Missed is one of those indie gems that you should not miss by any means.

Aside from that, this reimagining has a slower tempo and Electronic beats, in addition to Maddie’s soft voice, all of which grant this composition a sensitivity and a higher emotional value that the original version didn’t have, evoking a sense of uniqueness for this rendition.

There is no doubt that Bonded Jacky had a 2022 full of success, reaching over 10,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and achieving no less than 4 digits for every release, solidifying this performer as one to watch for in 2023.

Welcome to the Music Review Mixtape. In this feature, RCM staff writer Javier Rodriguez provides a round-up of the best new music submitted to our website. Today he introduces 7 new artists, with a short, snackable music review.

James’ Room ‘Glass Cards’

After a 2022 full of praise thanks to their astonishing debut single Come In, Bath/Bristol quintet James’ Room is back with Glass Cards, a track with all the musical intensity and traits that made them stand out early this year while adding some new and cool elements into the mix.

For those who have never heard of James’ Room before, you will notice the similarities between this group and the legendary band U2, an act that is one of the biggest influences for these lads. Frontman Sam Jones’ vocal delivery shares a very similar tonality with Bono’s voice being more specific during the Boy / War era; the same can be said about the killer riffs in this piece.

Although the most obvious difference that separates James’ Room from the Irish icons is the heavy focus on synths in this track by the hand of the newest member of the band, Will Coomes. Another dissimilarity would be the poignant lyrics, which explore feelings of loss and instability.

Overall, James’ Room has crafted a song with enough freshness and creative choices to keep fans engaged and waiting for their next move.

Carlo Espresso ‘Heart of Stone’

Our next guest is the absolute definition of a multifaceted artist, Carlo Espresso is not only a talented musician but also what many would call a “citizen of the world”, having lived in many different countries throughout his life, including France, Brazil,  and England, something that could explain his colourful and rich music background, exhibited in his newest offering Heart of Stone.

Heart of Stone starts like an acoustic ballad with Carlo’s silk voice paving the way through this charming melody, but just when you thought you had this tune figured out, this unpredictable singer surprises by building into a flamenco solo, showcasing his domain of this instrument.

This fabulous instrumentation fits incredibly well with the lyrics regarding a love that has grown cold into a one-sided relationship, evidencing Carlo’s passion which is almost palpable due to his flawless performance.

Carlo Espresso has scored another marvellous work that you should not miss under any circumstances.

ne=ro ‘Shine To Me’

Looking to have a positive influence on people and inspire them through the power of music, alternative rocker ne=ro is ready to take the world by storm with his 80s/90s fueled sound and highly personal lyrics. Recently he revealed his newest banger Shine To Me, a song that can be described as a meaningful throwback to the golden era of alternative music.

In this riveting musical work, we can appreciate pulsating drums followed by a Grungy riff that intertwines with Ro’s deep voice, quickly escalating to a high-energy chorus, evoking the spirit of 90s rock music.

The inspiration for this track comes from that blissful sensation that appears when you’re with someone that makes you feel like being on top of the world, simply being happy. There is no surprise why this song received airplay from Amazing Radio UK and USA.

Exuding optimism, Shine To Me will stick with you, making you press that repeat button multiple times and tapping your feet with its infectious rhythm.

Ninali ‘Tokyo’

Born in the Netherlands and raised in Belgium, Ninali started her musical journey when she was a teenager, writing and singing her first songs. Subsequently, she got signed by an independent label when she was just 18 years old. After this, she released her first single, Lovedrunk, which had a pretty decent rotation on radio stations all over the country. But the accolades didn’t stop there, her second track Millionaire, reached the spot number 34 on the Ultratop Tip charts in Belgium. All these experiences led her to perform at countless venues in her native land as an opening act.

Ninali’s sound covers a lot of ground, resulting in a melting pot of genres such as Jazz, R&B, and Pop. In Tokyo, this blending of styles comes with a subtle and elegant production that exalts Ninali’s vocal prowess. The theme of this song surged from an intense yearning for a distant place caused by the quarantine.

Now, after a hiatus and with brand new eyes, Ninali is more than prepared to pursue new goals in her career, so let this terrific singer take you on an aural trip to the capital of Japan without leaving the comfort of your home.

Fonto ‘Trust Nobody’

Hailing from the Bronx, New York, and of Cuban / American descent, Fonto is a sound engineer, producer, and recording artist with lots of experience despite his youth. Since an early age, Fonto has worked non-stop rapping, producing, and collaborating with plenty of emerging rappers, rapidly achieving notoriety thanks to his first viral hit, Felony, at just 16 years old.

One of his most recent singles, Trust Nobody was a collaboration with the acclaimed rapper SoFaygo before the latter got signed by Travis Scott’s label.

In this track ‘Float’, Hyperpop and Psychedelic Hip-hop meet, with Fonto spitting some hot rhymes, while the ethereal production creates a dreamy ambience that feels both fresh and well-penned.

There is a little bit of everything in this piece to please modern Hip-hop fans and people who are simply looking for something original.

Still growing, learning, and evolving, Fonto keeps proving that nothing can stop his current momentum.

Rumara ‘Teeth’

Just a couple of months after the release of their self-titled EP and a series of live shows across the UK capital (including an important presentation at the 93 Feet East) formidable South London duo Rumara has made their triumphal return with Teeth, the first of many releases to come over the coming months.

This group is the byproduct of Laura V (vocals) and Yujin Matsutoya (production), a pair of skilled musicians that has deciphered the formula for mind-blowing Electro pop.

Laura’s sweet vocal work blends gracefully with the steady beat and solemn synths, slowly expanding into a dramatic and monumental sonic array by the hand of Yujin, provoking strong feelings of sovereignty and awe.

The name of this outfit derives from the Portuguese word Rumar,  which means “to move towards” a concept that embodies the “in constant motion” nature of this band’s sound, and it shows in top-tier compositions like this one.

Discover more from Rumara:

Battery Point ‘Augury / Beech Tree’

All good things must end, but luckily for us, our last act for this day is an exciting band making its debut. Battery Point is a quintet from different parts of South West UK who just revealed their first set of singles, Augury and Beech Tree.

Augury is an exquisite coalescence of Post-Punk greatness and Alternative rock driven by a slow-paced rhythm section where the lead vocals carry the piece, culminating in a chaotic crescendo that perfectly portrays the decadence of its narration. And talking about narration, this melody unfolds a captivating story about a protagonist capable of seeing a bleak future that no one else can.

On the other hand, Beech Tree tells a more complicated yet equally engaging tale regarding a buried trauma told through the perspective of a protagonist who stumbled across a dead body, loosely inspired by the film Petite Maman.

This one is a more laid-back composition, with a more subtle instrumentation on which the almost hypnotic guitar and the soft-spoken vocal delivery are the MVPs of this soothing sonorous odyssey.

Battery Point’s first offerings are a pleasant and compelling introduction that makes us eager to hear what they will do next.

Mort City ‘America’s City’

What happens when you put two former college buddies on opposite coasts of America who want to create music together? The answer is Mort City, a duet of musicians who have spent the last two years developing their sound, despite the problem of being in separate parts of the country (Southern California and New York City).

Labelled as “punk rap” by the band itself, their diverse style has influences from rock titans such as Ty Segal, Jack White, Primus, and Cage The Elephant, among others.

Their latest offering America’s City, is a sonorous hybrid beast, starting with the tight groovy bass and talk-like vocals, reminiscing something that could be a part of a Lou Reed album in the late stages of his career, slowly building into a heavier banger with distorted guitars that would make Tom Morello proud, especially during the hallucinating solo towards the end.

America’s City is part of On The Scene, Mort City’s debut album, currently available on all streaming platforms.

Zenodro ‘All I Ever Wanted’

Our next guest hails from New Jersey and goes by the moniker of Zenodro. His music style is composed of several elements, creating a sound that is a bit hard to define but clearly has influences from genres such as Pop, Hip-hop, and R&B, among other things.

With only seven releases, Zenodro has built an ever-growing fanbase that will continue to expand with his newest addition, All I Ever Wanted.

Only production-wise, this is a work that deserves praise for the meticulous effort put into it, the short intro creates an ideal tension for an upcoming and incredibly catchy chorus that you won’t be able to forget in days. On top of this, the melodic riff and the rhythmic beat mixed with the layered back vocals blossom into a delightful snack for the ears.

With this highly infectious melody, Zenodro has demonstrated his evolution not only as a singer but also as a songwriter. If this is what we can expect from him for future releases, then we are definitely in for a treat.

Welcome to the Music Review Mixtape. In this feature, RCM staff writer Javier Rodriguez provides a round-up of the best new music submitted to our website. Today he introduces 6 new artists, with a short, snackable music review.

Λ N Λ S T Λ Z I Λ premieres the exhilarating song ‘Sun Is Low’

New York-based, Ukrainian-born Λ N Λ S T Λ Z I Λ made her debut this year, making some waves from day one thanks to her eclectic musical proposal. Generally depicted as a Dark-Pop performer, this uprising talent has crossed the limits established in this genre, surprising fans with a flamboyant production and stunning creativeness.

This tune conveys a beautiful message about self-sufficiency, succeeding at being the ultimate realization that no one can make you happy except yourself. Starting with shadowy ambient instrumentation and a meticulous wall of layered effects, Sun Is Low takes an unexpected turn, adding Latin rhythms; this uncommon combination creates an ideal yet intriguing sonic context, adorning this singer’s soothing siren voice.

Sun Is Low is a charming work of art that exhibits all the potential of this artist, and while this might be just the beginning, Λ N Λ S T Λ Z I Λ has more than enough tools in her musical arsenal to hopefully become a force to be reckoned with in the foreseeable future.

Garvie worries too much in ‘Life’s Good’

Welcome to Garvie’s world, a realm where video games and reality intertwine to create music based on the experiences of this skilled Londoner. Taking advantage of his expertise in writing for other artists and his passion for gaming, this peculiar artist saw in the lockdowns an opportunity to start producing his own work, mixing two of his favorite things, the result is a captivating sound with a friendly approach and overall a very distinctive style that you won’t hear very often.

Described as a “feel-good anthem for pessimists’ Life’s Good is an infectious bopper illustrating Garvie’s difficulty at enjoying the present moment while creating fatalistic scenarios inside of his head, something ironic considering the fun nature of this track.

Embellished by 8-bit Gameboy synths, cheerful guitar passages, and happy vocal effects, Life’s Good is an immediate “cheat code” for a good time.

Harbour Loft displays the cohesive effort in ‘Today’

The origin of Harbour Loft is one of those extraordinary circumstances that seemed like it was just meant to happen, with five friends from college deciding to form a band, working across different living rooms in Falmouth, with each member adding something unique to what’s been called a Loungepop supergroup, “not DIY enough to be bedroom pop but not mainstream enough to be commercial pop”.

Their debut album (also named Loungepop) is a notable landmark for Harbour Loft, consisting of seven well-rounded jammers, including the first single called Today.

To put it in simple terms, Today feels pretty much like the love child between R&B and Bedroom Pop, dissolving into a mixture of thoughtful arrays and a soaring chorus that evokes a majestic afternoon staring at the sunset.

Not only this track but the entire record delivers magnificently. Harbour Loft is a quintessential accompaniment for a chill evening with friends, losing yourself in its delightful anthems.

Backyard Casino aims for greatness with ‘Silver Tongue’

With just three singles on their catalogue and three years of existence, British upcoming band Backyard Casino has already called the attention of significant media, for example, BBC Introducing, Radio Xtra, Unsigned Weekly, and Hive Radio, proving that this four-piece means serious business in their quest of bringing Rock & Roll back to the masses.

After the great response to the tracks Line By Line and Come Through With The Lighting, BYC has delivered Silver Tongue, a head-nodding banger executed spectacularly, featuring tight bass and drums, a vicious hook, bouncy guitars, and James McEwen’s assertive vocal performance, all of which work as a trip down memory lane to the 2000s, time when bands like the Libertines and The Arctic Monkeys reigned supreme.

Commercially speaking, rock might not be the hottest thing right now, but as long as new and exciting acts like Backyard Casino keep surging and aiming to bring it back, it certainly will be in good hands.

Soft Wax brings chill vibes with ‘Over Me’

Currently, there is a plethora of artists wearing the DIY badge with pride, crafting art in circumstances that decades ago would be just impossible, one of those outfits is the duo of brothers known as Soft Wax, an independent act from Kent, UK, hitting already some big numbers on streaming services with their dreamy soundscapes transmitting pure emotion in their lyrics.

Over Me is their third single released this year, and just like its predecessors, this piece is full of 80s spectacularity, a decade that holds a special place in the heart of these musicians. Such influence is present in the feverish synths and hazy vocals, as well as the honest lyrical content tackling themes of heartbreak and conflicting thoughts, conceiving a compelling dynamic between the inherent catchiness of this composition and the more serious topics underneath.

Since their debut, Soft Wax’s ability to introduce old-school elements to their robust production has set them apart from the rest, being another great example of the proficiency in the DIY philosophy.

Welcome to the Music Review Mixtape. In this feature, RCM staff writer Javier Rodriguez provides a round-up of the best new music submitted to our website. Today he introduces 6 new artists, with a short, snackable music review.

The Cookie Jar Complot unveils the delicious opus ‘Cookies’

The story of this peculiar duo from Luxembourg started more than ten years ago, with Sven (guitarist) and Gilles (drummer) going on and off crafting music that unfortunately never left the rehearsal space, however that changed after a vocalist-based project that inspired these two performers to get back on action, honing their skills with mind-blowing compositions that fall in the realm of Post Rock and Math Rock.

Following the release of their acclaimed EP Caviar Capital and the subsequent singles NEO and Sweet Dreams, the next step comes in the form of Cookies, an instrumental masterpiece that exhibits the expertise on drums and guitar of this pair, Gilles drums add an immeasurable boost of adrenaline, while Sven’s guitar passages are rich and colourful, the many intricate and exciting patterns feel ecstatic and grant this piece with a distinctive flair even for a genre as versatile as Post Rock can be.

Overall listening to this jam is as satisfying as eating a jar full of cookies all by yourself (yeah, I know, that was a bad pun, but that doesn’t make it any less true, right?).

The Hybris unleash their ‘Silent Violence’

Covered in an aura of mysticism, The Hybris is an alternative rock trio with an international flavour, hailing from Nice, Los Angeles, and Cologne. Luckily for this group of friends, the distance has only added more lore to the mythos of this uncanny outfit.

Comprised of three talented musicians under masks, they perform as the characters Ringo Rabbit, Beanie Bison, and Malcolm Mandrill, with their true identities remaining a well-kept secret.

Silent Violence is the first single off their debut album Music, Vol.1, this track is a stone cold Rock banger with attitude, delivering a stunning hook that feels like the most satisfying slap of sonic aggressiveness straight to your brain, thanks to its emphatic lyrics and marvellous performance.

In a world where the presentation counts more than ever, The Hybris has capitalized splendidly on this department, making them an act worth your time.

Moses Mikheyev celebrates love with ‘Black Sky, White Moon’

Making a slight change of gears into his usual prog sound, L. A singer, songwriter, and novelist Moses Mikheyev has premiered his newest offering Black Sky, White Moon, a beautiful folk-oriented song that focuses on a personal experience in Moses’ life regarding a girl he fell in love with a couple of years ago.

Such strong emotions needed an equally intense production, a requirement flawlessly achieved by this performer. This melody starts softly with Moses’ deep voice and the chill acoustic guitar riffs, evoking that sensation of walking on clouds while being in love, erupting in the second half with solid drums and bass, accentuating that sentiment exponentially. If you need a song to dedicate to that special someone, Black Sky, White Moon is what you’ve been looking for.

BSWM will be part of the upcoming album I Only Have A Hundred Years To Love You, the debut record for this multifaceted artist.

Tarn PK wishes to find a ‘Simple Love’

Our next stop takes us to Wellington, New Zealand, the homeland of a familiar name in the RCM ranks. Tarn PK is a musician, producer, and songwriter with several achievements on his record, having thousands of streams on Spotify, thanks to extraordinary singles like Serenity and Cheap Ecstasy, as well as his well-received EPs Fantasy (2019) and Monarch (2021).

After such an overwhelming response, Tarn has opted to explore new sonic frontiers, not shying away from experimentation, his newest offering Simple Love follows in the steps of his previous single Street Noise by adventuring himself into the lands of Hyper pop and Electro pop once more.

Tarn’s distorted vocals add even more texture to the layered effects, creating an artificial atmosphere that contrasts magnificently with the idea of just wishing love was simpler.

With such a level of production, it’s safe to say that this jammer is anything but simple.

Kabinett announces ‘Mackie’s Comin”

Germany’s five-piece Kabinett has dropped their fifth gem of the year Mackie’s Comin’, a short and sweet Indie-Rock piece with a  captivating story behind it. Inspired by the fictional character Mackie Messer created by the German poet Bertolt Brecht almost 100 years ago, this tune thrives by turning one of the cruellest characters into one of the most infectious earworms you will hear this year.

This musical work has all the ingredients to become your new favourite Indie hymn, featuring two and a half minutes of tight drums, an oddly pleasing bass line, killer riffs, a contagious synth, and the cherry on top, a stellar vocal performance courtesy of Josê Sommer.

Mackie’s Comin’ is the final release before Kabinett’s debut EP Not About Us, which is a perfect way to close what’s been 2022 full of great moments for this quintet. We hope this is just the beginning of great things to come for this terrific act.
