The Cherrytree Music Company, the label, artist management and music publishing house behind artists including Sting and Shaggy have announced Cherrytree London, a live showcase in collaboration with music blog EQ Music.

Cherrytree London Live

This event will take place at London’s Camden Club on Friday, November 22nd featuring live performances from Cherrytree Music Company and EQ Music artists Sophie Grey, Nico Tortorella, MYYLO and Nic Billington.

The relationship between the Cherrytree Music Company and EQ Music spans back to 2011 when EQ covered the first Cherrytree London event that featured performances by chart-topping artists Ellie GouldingLMFAO and Far East Movement. Martin Kierszenbaum, GRAMMY-nominated musician, founder and CEO of Cherrytree Music Company, and Raj Rudolph, Founder, Chief Editor and head of EQ Music, had been kindred musical spirits, regularly encouraging and supporting each other’s initiatives.

Meet the artists

Sophie Grey. and Nico Tortorella represent an exciting new generation of Cherrytree artists, propelling the tradition of progressive pop into its next chapter. Classically trained pianist Sophie Grey. She has developed a self-produced, electrifying, new sound she calls “Retro Electro”. She fuses the spirits of her main influences Sade, The Weekend, Earth, Wind and Fire and The Killers with modern melodies and lyrics. Nico Tortorella, known for his lead acting roles in Younger and Walking Dead, is a multi-disciplined, creative catalyst who crafts personal scripts over lush electronic soundscapes and eclectic beats.

From EQ Music, MYYLO is an independent songwriter who blends pop, country, and folk. MYYLO’s introspective lyrics explore the intersection of queer and religious identity and a general unease about being alive. South African born, Nic Billington draws upon the music of Labrinth, The Weeknd and Billie Eilish to create a dark and melancholic sound with a modern and sexy twist. While melodies fuse dark pop and 80s nostalgia, his lyrics comment upon the personal struggles and hardships that he has faced.

The Cherrytree Music Company:

Founded in 2005 by multi-platinum, GRAMMY-nominated songwriter/producer Martín Kierszenbaum, the Cherrytree Music Company provides management, record label and publishing services to a boutique roster of artists, producers and mixers who push the creative envelope in popular music.  In the 19 years since its inception and launch of its first-ever release, Feist’s “Let It Die” album, Cherrytree has had an indelible impact on the music landscape from managing celebrated musician and cultural icon Sting to launching Lady Gaga’s first two albums.

The Cherrytree Music Company has also released culturally ground-breaking records and commercial successes by Ellie Goulding, LaRoux, Far East Movement and Robyn whose 2010 Cherrytree release “Body Talk” was named Album of the Decade by Rolling Stone. The Cherrytree Music Company, responsible for over 40 million unit sales to date, remains a vital source of popular music and a catalyst for artist collaboration and innovation.

North London-based three-piece Chatter, Chatter, have unveiled an innovative rendition of their 2023 single, ‘The News’. This new release, titled ‘The News (Live At The Roundhouse)’, captures the band bidding farewell to their cherished, self-built, Woodside Studios as they look ahead to the future.

Chatter, Chatter – The News

Throughout, Chatter, Chatter achieve something remarkable, by delivering a live release that feels to surpass the studio version of ‘The News’. In this live setting, the band showcase an impressive ability to elevate their sound and energy, creating a dynamic atmosphere that changes to put Michael Williams’ vocals in the spotlight, accentuated by the track’s lively instrumentation.

‘The News (Live at The Roundhouse)’ captures the essence of a tumultuous period for the three-piece band, evoking a sense of suspense and nervous energy. This haunting yet alluring sound is reminiscent of the early releases of Black Country, New Road, mixed with the raw energy of early The Wytches.

“Chilling instrumentation, introduced by soft drum beats and intricate guitarwork, is perfectly complemented by the soft yet hard-hitting vocals, creating a mesmerising and emotionally charged listening experience that captivates the listener from start to finish.”

In this reimagined version, the production of ‘The News’ injects a newfound vibrancy into the track. Unlike its original release, the live remake expertly weaves together the instrumentation and the lyrics, resulting in a seamless fusion where neither element dominates the other. This approach revitalises the song, infusing it with a more dynamic and engaging quality.

As Chatter, Chatter closes one chapter and begins on a new journey, the band has revealed thrilling prospects for upcoming releases, live shows, and a sustained commitment to crafting music they are passionate about. ‘The News (Live at The Roundhouse)’ marks the beginning of this new phase, allowing the three-piece band to explore their vision for their creative output in a way that feels more revitalised and polished. A wonderful listen.

UK charity the Music Venue Trust recently shared its annual report which described 2023 as “The most challenging year for the Grassroots Music Venue (GMV) sector since Music Venue Trust (MVT) was founded in 2014.” In this article, we explore the state of the grassroots music scene and pick three ‘must-see’ gigs in London in collaboration with live music experts Skiddle.

Grassroots Music Venues – Five Key Stats from 2023

  1. There are currently 835 GMVs in the UK
  2. Which attracted 23,657,220 audience visits in 2023
  3. There were 187,040 events
  4. 1,683,360 individual artist performances
  5. GMVs employ 28,223 people

The number of Grassroots Music Venues has decreased by 13% in one year (960 in 2022 to 835 in 2023). Of these losses, 51.4% were found to have fully closed as trading businesses and 48.6% had ceased hosting live music.

When you realise 81% of GMVs operate in rented premises and the average rent paid by these venues experienced a yearly increase of 37.5% it’s easy to see why venues are struggling to stay afloat.

But there are some positives. There was a slight increase (+1%) in capacity utilisation and the average number of events put on by the GMVs was 22% higher than in 2022. These contrasting statistics suggest that public demand was likely not a factor in the loss of the 125 trading GMVs. Overall demand for live music has remained broadly consistent and is being met by the remaining GMVs increasing their supply.

Get out there and support live music

It’s clear grassroots venues and emerging artists need your support more than ever, so we’re collaborating with live music experts Skiddle to showcase some of the best gigs you could attend in London in the coming weeks.

Congratulations on surviving January, surely the longest month in history. Payday is finally here and that Dry January effort really should be rewarded with a proper night out.

Here are our three picks from the Skiddle What’s on guide.

1. The Vintage Explosion – 7th March (Union Chapel, London)

If you love vintage soul, then you need to know The Vintage Explosion. Sir Rod Stewart recently described lead singer William Hitchell as the best white soul singer I’ve heard.

In the past 12 months, The Vintage Explosion have had three No.1 albums on the Worldwide iTunes Blues Album Chart, No.3 on the Worldwide iTunes Album Chart as well as top ten on the US Billboard Blues Album Chart. Sold Out a 14-date UK Tour, were specially invited to perform at the BBC Big Birthday Bash on TV as the house band and made their live debut on national TV on This Morning on ITV.

Catch them live at the stunning Union Chapel before they take over the world and tell your friends you heard them first.

Get your tickets here.

2. High Fade – 10th Feb (Oslo, London)

Try listening to High Fade and sitting still, trust me it won’t happen. Scotland’s freshest funk band are on their debut UK headline tour and you owe it to yourself to be in the front row. The energy levels here are irresistible, this promises to be the night out of the year so far.

Get your tickets here.

3. This Feeling – 9th Feb (The Macbeth, London)

This Feeling knows a thing or two about discovering live talent. What started life as a monthly club night in London 15 years ago and has organically become the UK’s number one promoter of emerging acts. Tour alumni include Catfish and the Bottlemen, Blossoms and The Struts to name just three.

This four-band line-up consists of CUSP, Superdays, Five Lines and Magnolias. Who all deserve your ears!

If you love the boys in the band, this is your perfect night out. Indie is alive and well. Check out the four bands in advance.

Last night in London, Swiss pop star in-waiting, Alessia showcased tracks from her forthcoming EP Modern Disco Girl live at The Star in Shoreditch and we were in the front row.

Introducing Alessia

Swiss-born Alessia admits a keen interest in funk and disco which spans the generations with influences as diverse as Chic, The Weekend and Calvin Harris. There is also a strong pop sensibility here that will find easy favour with fans of Dua Lipa.

Alessia – Live at The Star

BIMM songwriting graduate Alessia has that rare ability to hold a room.  Her new EP, set for release early next year is called ‘Modern Disco Girl’ and it’s easy to see why. Alessia brings a sparkle to everything she does.

Last night it looked like she had melted down a glitter ball to create her top, which was paired with custom jeans, tattoos and a pair of Converse high-tops. How modern indeed. Only a few hours earlier Alessia had been recording in Sweden before flying back to London and rushing to the stage.

This is disco for the jet-set generation. Just imagine a sun-drenched, rooftop terrace, where everyone is drinking Aperol Spritz. Alessia would be the soundtrack.

Alessia live in London at The Star, Shoreditch

Back at The Star… (which coincidentally, seems a fitting venue name for our pop star in waiting) Alessia’s set provides the perfect preview of her EP, and there is still time to include her previous single ‘Sugar‘ and a previously unreleased track ‘Nicotine’ which delivers the perfect, early evening dopamine rush. Her choice of the Four Non-Blondes ‘What’s Up’ as a cover provides a mid-set interlude and further excuse for a sing-along.

It’s hard to pick a favourite from her set but ‘Electricity’ is right up there, It feels like it could have been the love child of Chic and Daft Punk. ‘Midnight Dynamite’ also from the EP continues the good vibes. Her lyrics joyously revel in the positive aspects of life.

Alessia performs live at The Star in Shoreditch

Alessia’s girl-next-door charm wins hearts as she invites the crowd to come closer and win a handmade friendship bracelet in return for singing her new single ‘Spicy’ the loudest. ‘Spicy’ is a sweet ode to love and adulation, with a fiery kick. “Every time I look in your eyes I see fire” she swoons in her sugary, soft tone.

Alessia is at the start of her musical journey and we look forward to watching it unfold. Keep an ear out out for her new single ‘Spicy’ which is out next Thursday (12th of October) or catch Alessia live at The Troubadour next Saturday. Her new EP Modern Disco Girl, produced by Will Hicks (Ed Sheeran, Anne-Marie, Dylan) is set for release early next year.

May Payne and Stefan Mahendra, have been crowned the victorious winners of Casio Music UK’s inaugural ‘Casio Sessions’ competition.

The Casio Sessions

Taking place at the stylish Ninety-One Living Room jazz bar on Brick Lane, sixteen extremely talented singer-songwriters performed original compositions on the piano. The finalists played in front of judges and an energised live crowd, bidding to win the top prize – an award-winning, Casio PX-S7000 digital piano worth £2,249, and £500 cash.

The judges on the night, Neil Evans and Dan Henry of Casio Music UK and Mohamed A. Sawyer and Emmanuel Tchombe of Loop Music, were blown away by the performers, who applied to the competition after its launch in June by Casio Music and Loop Music.

The Winners

After an incredibly hard decision, the top prize was split between May and Stefan – who each took home a PX-S7000 piano and the cash. 21-year-old May Payne from Dorset, whose sensitive, beautifully raw and emotion-lead music draws from an eclectic mix of RnB, Emo, and Folk, captivated the audience with her powerful and deeply personal piece called I Hate It When You Touch Me.

Soulful 28-year-old Stefan Mahendra, hailing from South East London, brought his wide range of technical ability and refined musical craft to the stage. Fusing influences of Marvin Gaye, D’Angelo and John Legend, Stefan stunned on the night, with an original composition called Orbit before performing an encore with Alright.

“It’s a huge honour to win the very first Casio Sessions! Thank you to Casio for the wonderful opportunity. To have the chance to play and be recognised for a song that is deeply personal to me was an unforgettable experience. It’s a great competition, with such a warm atmosphere between all the uniquely talented finalists.” May Payne.
“To be considered as a finalist in the first place is amazing, but then to win is a massive honour. I am so thankful to Casio for allowing me to showcase my original music and I’m incredibly excited about collaborating with them on future Casio projects. Congratulations to all the finalists! The talent on show was just mind-blowing.” Stefan Mahendra

The Prize

Neil Evans, Head of Casio EMI, added; “A massive congratulations to May and Stefan. We’re absolutely thrilled to award them the prize money and a PX-S7000. We were blown away by their writing, technicality and authenticity. May connected with everyone in the room and Stefan had incredible vocal dexterity. We also witnessed sixteen phenomenal finalists, which shows the strength of talent out there and Casio Music will continue to support them. A huge, huge thank you to all of them.”

All sixteen live finalists will receive content captured from the Casio Sessions event including professional photography and videography of their performances. A full list of finalists can be found here.

The sixteen finalists all performed their original songs on a Casio PX-S7000, a multi-award winning digital piano that sets a new standard in digital pianos with a high specification, which includes a newly developed hybrid wooden hammer keyboard and a contemporary look. The ability to directly plug in a microphone and make use of the on-board vocal effects made this the ideal performance instrument for the finalists. For more information, head to casio.co.uk/emi.

Winter-Improv 1 is a wonderfully reflective and serene soundtrack, close your eyes and you can almost see the icicles melting on the front porch.

About AJ Pickering

AJ Pickering is a British composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist who has worked with the likes of Burberry, Merrell, BBC, Homegoods and has acquired over 100 Million streams with his various projects. This project is an outlet for his solo piano and composing musings, focusing on neo-classical, classical crossover and ambient. His pieces are improvised and recorded at the moment they’re being created along with accompanying videos to capture that same performance.

“I started learning piano at the age of 5 along with gymnastics, karate, swimming etc but piano/music was the only hobby to go the distance… mostly thanks to my folks for encouraging me but also to my piano teacher at the time, Steve Allen. He spotted early on that I didn’t want to do the standard piano grades and music theory route… I wanted to create. He wisely advised my folks that I needed a keyboard with lots of buttons. This eventually led to acquiring a Roland MC-50 midi sequencer (using floppy discs!) and a Roland Sound Canvas. With these two bits of equipment, I could compose my own backing tracks and build worlds of sounds on my own. Years later I eventually decided to learn the music theory side but my true passion has always been to create and to play my feelings”. AJ Pickering
