Marking the first anniversary of her single ‘Now’, singer-songwriter Ally Cribb has unveiled an intimate acoustic version of the track, preserving the heartfelt essence of the original while giving it a fresh, stripped-back feel.

Ally Cribb – Now (Acoustic)

Though still early in her career, Canadian singer Ally Cribb has already built an impressive foundation. Music runs deep in her family, passed down from her father, a musician and writer, which inspired her to start singing at just eight years old. From the beginning, she turned to music as both an outlet and a source of comfort, using her songs to process life’s defining moments. This early connection to songwriting shaped her style into something honest, unfiltered, and universally relatable.

Her journey began gaining traction in 2019 with a standout cover of Radiohead’s Creep, which earned over 200,000 YouTube views and showcased her ability to reinterpret a classic with her own artistry. She followed that success with her debut original single, Bigger, which has since surpassed 60,000 Spotify streams.

In 2024, Ally Cribb released her second EP, Now, a blend of pop and country storytelling marked by vulnerability and emotional depth. To celebrate its anniversary on August 1, 2025, she’s releasing acoustic versions of three fan favourites: Know Better, Not This Time, and Now.

The track was written when Ally Cribb was just 18 years old, and it perfectly reflects that stage of life, the intensity, uncertainty, and formative moments that come with the difficult transition into adulthood. It was a period she felt deserved to be captured in song and shared with others. In this acoustic version, the pace slows and the original’s weeping guitar is replaced by soft, steady strumming, giving the song a new layer of intimacy. What was already a melody overflowing with emotion becomes a deeply moving acoustic piece, one that is likely to strike right at the heart of anyone who listens.

“Now is an emotionally rich acoustic piece, carried by heartfelt lyrics and flawlessly executed.”

This acoustic rendition breathes fresh life into an already heartfelt and compelling composition, highlighting Ally Cribb’s clear artistic growth while hinting at even greater things to come. It will be exciting to see how her music evolves over the next few years.

wAHb – Early Virgins EP

wAHb is a post-Americana project out of Wyoming. Caleb Bristol began this project back in 2019, exploring music in a way that incorporates everyday life.

The opening guitar riff is beautiful, melodic and winding; it is reminiscent of some of the best 2000s folk-pop. ‘King of Hearts’ is littered with majestic songwriting and raw vocal beauty. The chorus is thoughtful in both presence and feel, allowing for a true journey of the mind. The song flows beautifully, and the end is a cry for help as it leaves all listeners wanting more.

Luckily, ‘Shorties for the Camel’ maintains the mystic atmosphere and brings us deeper into our own web of pensiveness. More poetic lyrics are presented in the form of shapeless vocals. It is stark throughout that this EP has been made with purpose and for the love of the craft. The pulsing guitar builds in the second chorus, and the vocals maintain raspy nuances but become increasingly desperate. The gloomy, powerful sounds encapsulate the listener.

A western apocalyptic feel grips hold of us on ‘Dawn’. The simple, sliding guitar is built upon with sounds that emit the essence of peace and adventure. The ending is beyond peaceful and truly transcendent.

The final track is my personal favourite on the EP for many reasons. The build-up of vocal silence and instrumental mastery sets up the song perfectly. The lyrics seem to meld with the instrumental backing perfectly as if there was no other way this song could be written.  The ending of the track is real and edgy in the true meaning of the word. It leaves us wondering and wanting more.

This EP was made with divine purpose, and I take my hat off to its creator. There should always be a place for art as pure as this in the world.

“Early Virgins is a four-song masterpiece that anyone with a spare sixteen minutes should feel obligated to listen to, a real work of art.”

Laura Mock releases her debut EP home//body, a poignant exploration of belonging and the personal meaning of “home.”

Laura Mock – home//body

The sound of the EP is deeply influenced by Mock’s upbringing in Maine. The state’s lush landscapes are frequently referenced in both her lyrics and melodies, creating a musical landscape that echoes Maine’s natural beauty. The rich instrumentation blends traditional New England sounds with contemporary elements, adding depth and texture to the music.

Laura Mock on Spotify

The opening track, ‘Acadia’, is a heartfelt reflection on the love for a place that feels like home, as well as the fear of leaving it to grow. It also touches on the anxiety of returning to a place you once called home, only to find that you no longer fit in because you’ve changed too much. The arrangement of ‘Acadia’ is mellow and ambient, allowing Mock’s vocals to breathe. After the three-minute mark, an uplifting instrumental section featuring strings, piano, guitar, saxophone, and drums provides a cinematic break before Mock returns for a moving outro. ‘Acadia’ is a powerful, emotional song that draws listeners in from beginning to end.

‘Landlocked’ delivers on the promise of indie-folk with its gentle acoustic guitar, atmospheric strings, and simple drum beats that propel the song forward. In it, Mock tells a compelling story about feeling most at home with the people who make you feel loved and supported, no matter how much you change. The song explores the confusion of growing and evolving, and the doubt that can arise when you’re unsure of who you are becoming.

Next is ‘Rocky Shores’, an upbeat track with a country vibe. The song features a captivating arrangement of guitars, bass, drums, and backing vocals, showcasing Mock’s signature style and storytelling. ‘Rocky Shores’ tells a relatable tale about embarking on the journey of self-discovery, losing yourself in the process, and wishing you could return to a simpler time when the “old you” felt more like home.

The fourth track, ‘Ribs’, is a sombre ballad that will likely bring a tear to your eye. It paints a poignant picture of not knowing where you belong and the emotional pain that accompanies that feeling. The song speaks to the sense of not being worthy of good things yet and how that self-doubt strips you down to the core. The ambient arrangement perfectly complements the raw emotion in the vocals, while a choir of backing vocals adds depth and resonance to the track.

The final track, ‘CTC’ , stands out with its indie-pop feel and uplifting tone. It’s a hopeful anthem about the transient nature of loneliness and the belief that, even if you haven’t yet found your people, you are still a valuable person. The song encourages listeners to trust the process and stay true to themselves, knowing that one day they’ll find a community that appreciates them for who they are. ‘CTC’ sends an important message about embracing your quirks and staying authentic, and Mock conveys it eloquently and impactfully.

Overall, home//body is a well-produced EP with masterfully crafted arrangements and deeply moving lyrics. It resonates with anyone who has ever questioned where they belong or who they are, offering a sense of hope that, eventually, you will find your “home”—whether that’s a physical place, meaningful relationships, or self-acceptance.

Home//Body takes listeners on a captivating journey through rich soundscapes, encouraging them to reflect on what “home” truly means and to appreciate the people and moments that make them feel loved.

Leicester duo The Daydream Club have put their unique spin on the little-known Sam Cooke track ‘Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me’ and you need to hear it.

Sam Cooke – Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me

Sam Cooke is known and recognised as one of the most influential soul artists of all time, earning him the nickname The King of Soul. He is best known for hits including What A Wonderful World, A Change Is Gonna Come and Bring It On Home.

During his tragically short 8-year career, Cooke released 29 singles that charted in the Billboard Top 40 Charts, and 20 that charted in the Top 10. In 1964 he was shot and killed by the manager of a motel in Los Angeles. After his death, an inquest and investigation ruled his death was a justifiable homicide.

Cooke is included on Billboard’s list of the 35 greatest R&B artists of all time. Two years before he died in 1962 he released the album Twistin’ The Night Away which contained the single of the same name. The single peaked at number one on the R&B chart and number 6 on the UK singles chart. The song was recorded with the infamous Wrecking Crew as session musicians.

Track 4 on this album was a little-known track ‘Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me’ an upbeat number complete with trumpets, a honky tonk style piano and Cooke’s trademark soul yearnings.

The Daydream Club – Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me

Fast forward to 2024, and Leicester duo The Daydream Club has chosen to rework this little-known track to make it their own.

Their version is rooted in their trademark boy-and-girl harmonies, which sound sublime paired with their stripped-back, acoustic arrangement. Paula Pickering’s honeyed vocals hug your ear lobes joyously.

The Daydream Club have transformed Cooke’s big band, club track into an intimate and deeply personal voice note, something you might leave a loved one. The repeating refrain “I know you’re gonna miss me” is as much confidence as insecurity.

Discover George Bone’s crowd-pleasing heartbreak anthem.

‘Too young to know it all, but that’s the way it goes’, sings one of the opening lines of George Bone’s ‘One/Two Summer Fling’. Get out the old pictures and put your lighters in the air – this is a big track dedicated to lost loves and the flings that you hoped would be more.

George Bone is an Essex-based artist and singer-songwriter. Regular RCM readers may remember his debut single ‘Valencia’, and this track is an equally polished sophomore offering, leading up to a planned debut EP release next year.

‘One/Two Summer Fling’ is a heartfelt acoustic pop track, with shades of folk and RnB and an anthemic feel.

George Bone’s honest lyrics detail the breakdown of a relationship, ‘how time goes by and wars can start to rage’, though there are hints at damage on both sides, as he admits they were ‘losing ourselves in each other’s lows’. The damning conclusion comes in the catchy chorus, as Bone concludes, ‘I was looking for lifetime, you were looking for a temporary thing’ – the summer fling of the title. The melodies are solid and memorable, and Bone’s vocals are strong with an edge of husky.

The track begins with gentle guitar picking, opening out with pads and sweeping strings, with tight backing vocals. It’s got a classic feel to it, with a chanting breakdown that’s sure to be crowd-friendly, yet with some unexpected chord changes that hint at wider influences. Fans of the likes of Ed Sheeran, George Ezra and Bon Iver are sure to find something to enjoy here.

The O.O. ‘Sometimes, I See You Look’

‘Sometimes I see you look, I see you look and smile at me’ – haven’t we all had these thoughts? Hovering somewhere between ‘Oh god do I have something in my teeth’ and ‘Oh wow they must like me’ lie the beginnings of love. And sometimes we can’t help but hope, even if it turns out they were waving to someone behind us. It’s this hope that The O.O. taps into, on their single.

The O.O. is a singer-songwriter hailing from the Isle of Wight. This is their debut release, gearing up for many more throughout 2024, with an album in the works.

‘Sometimes, I See You Look’ is an easily enjoyable acoustic-driven indie pop song, with plenty of youthful energy.

The simple, first-crush lyrics balance giddiness – ‘I saw your pretty face, it made me freeze right in my space’ – with all the classic insecurities – ‘you don’t need me, no not today’. While it’s nothing new under the sun, there’s some fun to be had with lines like ‘now I’ve fallen for ya, I don’t know how to get back up’, and it’s all delivered with relaxed melodies and The O.O’s confident, appealingly youthful melodies.

The production centres around bright indie guitars, along with energetic beats and bouncy basslines, keeping everything upbeat. There’s a clear influence from acts like The Kooks, The Libertines and The View, so any fans of these acts will find themselves in happy territory here. It’s a strong opener for a young artist who will hopefully carve out more of their own identity.

Will Allen – Are You Ready?

‘Take me, sixteen, black jeans, long sleeves…’ opens ‘Are You Ready?’ by Will Allen. It sets the stage for this coming-of-age story, where Allen recounts the various stages and lessons he’s been through in his – admittedly still young – life. Nevertheless, it’s something a lot of young listeners will relate to, as they navigate their 20s and all that comes with it.

Will Allen is a Plymouth-based indie pop singer-songwriter. With a 2020 EP and a handful of singles, he’s gearing up for his next EP and the next phase of his career.

‘Are You Ready?’is a pacey acoustic track full to the brim with heartfelt emotions and lessons learned.

Allen’s confessional lyrics recount being ‘unseen every day at school, no one cares about the guy following the rules’, then shift to his university days where he was ‘working so hard that I lost track’, then finally bidding farewell to ‘the best friends I’ve ever known’ as he presumably moves on to chase his dreams. There are some wry lines here, like ‘Even if I can’t finish what’s in your cider can’, as well as some interesting observations – ‘our culture teaches to put ourselves first, but when I did that, things only got worse’. There are endearing, unashamedly big emotions here, as he declares himself ready for love and whatever life throws at him. The melodies veer between classic pop and staccato early Ed Sheeran sing-rapping, with the ‘lost in the middle’ hook being memorable.

It’s a stripped-back track, featuring some tight harmonies and insistent guitar, and Allen’s natural, youthful vocals. It’s a bit unpolished at times but can be forgiven for its spirit. Fans looking for their next lyric-heavy singer-songwriter could do a lot worse.

Tyler McDermott – ‘Light The Way’

Many songs have spoken on the subjects of depression, grief, anxiety and spiritual awakenings. (Or as I call it, Thursday mornings.) But a harder task is to musically capture the feeling of going through it, like trying to describe a colour with only words. This is what Tyler McDermott attempts on his album ‘Light The Way’, inspired by his own struggles and spiritual encounters. Let’s take a look at the titular lead track.

Tyler McDermott is a musician and songwriter based in Atlanta. After his debut album ‘Wanderer’ was released in 2023, he’s straight back on the horse with his next conceptual LP.

‘Light The Way’ is a moody alt-acoustic piece that evokes the tension and confusion of human emotion, providing a compelling opening to the EP.

The lyrics to the title track are sparse but hopeful, repeating that ‘We’ll find a way’, repeating their determination and optimism that there will be a place ‘where love can grow’, although unnervingly one seemingly must go through ‘the abyss’ first. These are combined with repetitive melodies, creating an almost mantra-like effect. It’s delivered with pleasingly husky vocals, though they could use more confidence and spotlighting in the production.

The track is well crafted, opening with pinging, echoing guitar strumming and gradually layering hooks and instruments to create something both dreamy and nightmarish. There’s light percussion, moody piano lines, sharp guitar licks, all with a strange echoing dissonance that evoke a journey – but not necessarily a pleasant one. Fans of singer-songwriter style, alt-folk, and the slightly abstract will enjoy this, and should check out the full EP.

TABLE 4 1 – ‘Spaceman’

‘You look around and all you see is the ghost that talks to me, and calls your name…’ opens ‘Spaceman’ by TABLE 4 1. It’s a slightly unnerving opening which is softened by the wistful melodies. This is a love song with all the floating dreaminess yet strange detachedness of – well, a spaceman. A new, acoustic re-release of an older track, TABLE 4 1 are sending this glowing little tune out into the atmosphere again.

TABLE 4 1 is the project of Birmingham-based singer-songwriter Harry Bott. Some may know him as the lead singer of the band Cigarette Social Club, who supported the likes of The Rills and Second Thoughts. With many songs leftover from band days, Bott is reshaping them into his solo project.

‘Spaceman’ is a bare, yet intimate acoustic indie song, filled to the sky with longing and regrets.

‘It would have happened in the end, ‘cos you’re more than just a friend’ sings the wryly resigned lyrics, describing a relationship that seems to have cracks forming. Fault is admitted with lines like ‘I tell you lies’ but hope remains that she’ll ‘find the keys’ to make it work out. These are all delivered with classic melodies and Bott’s committed performance, with warm, husky vocals and delicate falsetto.

The production centres around some lovely interplay between a bright guitar and a saxophone – an unexpected choice, but it works here, keeping it smooth and never sleazy. Echoes of classic songwriting in the vein of The Beatles and David Bowie are clear, but also more modern acts like The Kaiser Chiefs. It’s a track both classic and fresh, which could appeal to a variety of listeners.

Pouring raw emotion and heartfelt lyrics, newcomer Lynden has revealed his sophomore track, You, an autobiographical and sincere ode to love.

Lynden – You

Lynden’s musical journey goes all the way back to his childhood, constantly exposed to this form of art, primarily by his parents. Whether it was singing duets with his mom or his dad blasting Coldplay as loud as possible, it was clear from the beginning that music would always be there.

Naturally, it was only a matter of time before this artist wanted to start his own path as a musician, which occurred at eleven years old when he began practising guitar. Subsequently, at fifteen, he got into songwriting, inspired by his love of poetry. And in 2018, he graduated with a BA Honours in music production.

His newest track, You, counts with the distinction of being mastered by the talented mastering engineer John Davis, known for his work with renowned artists such as The Killers, Blur, The Kooks, Jamie T, and Inhaler.

Following his debut track See You, Lynden wanted to leave his comfort zone and create a more traditional love melody for his second official single. Here is when You comes into play, working a beautiful narration of how he met his partner and an open letter expressing his feelings for her.

With his second release, Lynden demonstrates that sometimes less is more, with a subtle instrumentation that evokes feelings of an almost therapeutic calmness. Mainly relying on gentle guitar strumming and his passive vocals, this singer successfully delivers these heartwarming lyrics, setting a romantic mood that will strongly resonate with anyone who has ever felt in love.

“You is an endearing auditive story, soulful and touching to the core.”

Lynden certainly knows how to catch one’s attention. His music is just as honest as it is beautiful, and it shows in this piece, which displays the potential of this rising artist. Making us wonder how far he will go from here.
