Efterlo and The Daydream Club ‘Somewhere To Belong’ is a dreamy collaboration and the story about searching and finding something significant.

Efterlo, The Daydream Club – ‘Somewhere To Belong’

A serendipitous introduction led to a wonderful collaboration. Artist Jess Matthews was seeking a producer and was directed to Adam Pickering (The Daydream Club) by BBC Introducing. The pair met up and clicked like old friends, writing and recording three finished songs in just one session, which led to the creation of Efterlo.

‘Somewhere To Belong’ was written and recorded in the space of a few hours and also features Paula Pickering (The Daydream Club) alongside Jess and Adam. Jess and Paula’s voices blend so well, at times it is hard to distinguish the difference.

“It’s one of those songs that almost created itself it was so effortless, I’m a lucky chap getting to work with these two brilliant ladies”. [Adam Pickering]

Blending ambient, dream pop and experimental production, Efterlo’s debut delivers an immersive and emotive soundtrack jammed full of hazy melodies and textured soundscapes. We can’t wait to hear what else was created in that session.

Electronic music duo The Keeling Curve have released their latest experimental EP, ‘Plaques Entangled’, a captivating exploration that fuses electronica and ambient music elements.

The Keeling Curve – Plaques Entangled

Formed by composer Will Frampton and violinist Rhiannon Bedford, The Keeling Curve is a distinctive musical project examining humanity’s connection to nature. Their sound blends intricate electronics with ambient textures, utilizing modular synthesizers, tape loops, and found sounds to create a one-of-a-kind aural experience.

Since their formation in 2020, The Keeling Curve has made waves in the experimental music scene, featuring on broadcasts and compilations and performing across England and Wales. They’ve also collaborated with multimedia artists and shared their expertise through guest lectures at universities. With five EPs already under their belts, the duo now presents Plaques Entangled, a four-track album that ventures into deep sonic territory.

Unlike their previous releases, which focused on specific themes, Plaques Entangled centres on the performance itself and the rich, instrumental moments woven throughout each track. The album’s intricate soundscapes reflect the duo’s ongoing exploration of complex audio textures and emotional depth.

The album opens with Host, a track that begins with a long, drawn-out violin that sets an eerie, haunting tone. The electronic elements gradually build, creating an escalating sense of tension that pulls listeners into an anxious atmosphere.

In Galarnad, Bedford’s violin work takes centre stage, showcasing her exceptional skill. The song is further enhanced by reverberating, echoed effects that create a serious, contemplative mood. This track highlights The Keeling Curve’s ability to balance raw instrumental power with innovative production choices.

51/50, the shortest track on the album, offers a minimalist reprieve with its ethereal, almost angelic production. The track serves as a transition, building anticipation for what follows with its subtle, dreamlike quality.

The album closes with An Act, a 15-minute epic that contrasts sharply with the previous tracks. The piece evolves from atmospheric violin melodies to intense electronic beats, creating a chaotic yet beautiful sonic tapestry. As the track progresses, the energy shifts towards a more serene conclusion, with hazy spoken verses that gradually lead to a powerful climax of celestial proportions.

“Plaques Entangled is a compelling exploration of ambient and electronic soundscapes. The contrasting elements and dynamic performance throughout the album invite deep reflection, making it a rewarding experience for listeners seeking an immersive, sonorous venture.”

Even within the unconventional world of experimental music, Plaques Entangled distinguishes itself with its intricate compositions and standout moments. Needless to say, it’s a work worth delving into, so put on your headphones and experience it at your earliest opportunity.

Music has always played different roles in people’s lives. It can be the hedonistic release, or the soundtrack to a painful breakup. It can chill you out or hype you up. To Be Human:  Ambient Tapes by muvii mento recognises the power of music to soundtrack the human experience and that’s why it deserves your attention.

muvii mento -To Be Human: Ambient Tapes

‘To Be Human: Ambient Tapes’ is the debut release for muvii mento, the latest alias from the long-time writing partnership of Adam and Paula Pickering. (AKA The Daydream Club).

Released in October 2023 ‘To Be Human: Ambient Tapes’ was written and recorded during lockdown in 2020. The album explores relatable feelings from first loves, to grieving loss and then picking ourselves back up to go again and again. This is an album inspired by a yearning for human connection and a study of what it means to be human. The 10 beautiful tracks effortlessly soundtrack the moments and experiences we all go through.

I remember a time when ‘chill-out’ music was everywhere, every pop track was given its chilled-out remix, and the Big Chill Festival was the summer’s cool, must-have ticket. But back then ‘chill-out’ music felt fairly vacuous. It was cool but never really seemed to serve any serious purpose. Conversations about mental health were not a thing.

Fast forward 20 years and that has changed. A culture and an entire industry have sprung up around mental health with apps like Headspace and Calm finding their way into our lives. Several research studies show music enhances sleep and it’s been proven to lessen the impact of depression and anxiety.

To Be Human: Ambient Tapes positively contributes to this story. With its ethereal layers and swells of emotions it’s an album that encourages you to stop, take a moment for yourself and breathe. This is music with a purpose.

Each track on this album carefully signposts a moment or emotion. It’s almost like an instructional manual allowing you to jump to the chapter you need most.

We Begin / We Love / We Trust / We Fall / We Grow etc.

“To Be Human: Ambient Tapes is a compelling collection, that has been made with a huge amount of thought, love and empathy. Take a moment out of your day to listen.”

Adam and Paula Pickering (AKA The Daydream Club)

Known for their genre-hopping, the duo previously experimented with atmospheric music on the album ‘Ambient Project // Sound Asleep’ under the name The Daydream Club. They decided they needed a dedicated outlet for their love of ambient music so they consider this album the official handover from The Daydream Club to muvii mento for that musical universe.

Discover ‘Seven Gifts’ Lis Addison’s assured contribution to Indian and world music.

Lis Addison – ‘Seven Gifts’

This site largely covers Western pop music, but we like to throw in some wildcards now and then! Fans of world music may already know Lis Addison, but anyone looking to broaden their horizons might find her a good place to start. She blends genres in an accessible way, in this case, Indian classical music with some electronic influences.

Lis Addison is a singer and composer in world and electronic music, with a particular specialism in North Indian classical music. She’s an old hand in this world, with over 10 million streams and top 10 albums hitting the international charts. This latest track marks a rework and remix of one of her previous pieces.

‘Seven Gifts’ is an ambient track mixing classical Indian and electronic influences, managing to be both euphoric and soothing.

The lyrics may prove a challenge to anyone who hasn’t brushed up their Hindi and Sanskrit, but in the style of much meditative music, the lyrics are simple and repetitive, allowing ambience and improvisation to shine through. (The lyrics are in praise of Addison’s former guru – ‘sat guru’ means ‘true guru). It’s Addison’s remarkable voice that is allowed to shine through here – pure, uplifting, and flexible, capable of both long floating passages and quick melisma. The cascading melodies, whilst using a Indian rag scale, still remain accessible and provide some memorable phrases.

The production centres around a tanpura drone and some impressive tabla work from Ben Leinbach – the tabla is like a second voice of its own, developing and responding to the track. But there are also some modern touches, hints of synths and keyboard pads that flesh the track out into something more current. Even if you’re not familiar with the genre, this is still an accessible piece.

With a surprisingly light stroke, Australian singer/producer Jim Alxndr and Norwegian artist Lido reflect on the meaning and beauty of our existence on ‘Live In Pretend’.

Jim Alxndr and Lido – Live In Pretend

The lyrical hero of “Live in Pretend” is a person who has questioned the meaning of their own existence. Suddenly catching themselves thinking that we are all immeasurably small and weak in this world, they are trying to seize at least some opportunity to prove to them that as long as they are alive, they are strong. They give themselves to the world, receiving in return a human and friendly disposition. They suffer from chaos in the world, which has grown into chaos in their head. The only thing that remains for them is to be comfortable for everyone else and not to defend their real interests, not to seek comfort for them.

The song slowly dances around all these thoughts, smoothly tossing and turning from side to side, walking around with an ironic smirk and as if urging the hero to turn to his questions again and again, and at the same time also closing the circle of hero thoughts, dooming them to psychological torment. Its atmosphere and vibe are like a conversation with the universe.

Synthesizers, like waves, fall on you with all their weight, and then crawl back. And after the waltzing-like start, the instruments eventually resound with a huge roll of thunder, like an explosive wave. The cosmic, light and fleeting mood of the song seems to be paradoxical. While the text of the song loads us with thoughts, its musical sequence frees us from them or even shows how small they are in comparison with the scale of the universe. However, in this ambiguity, the balance of the song is manifested – its beauty, its swan grace, politeness and respect for the laws of life, slowness and thoughtfulness.

The idea is that at the end of our lives we all turn into a ‘cosmic dust. I thought the chords felt pretty universy and cosmic / Milky Way type vibes so with that idea in mind I thought it would be cool to write a song loosely about the expansiveness of our experience here on earth.”

And after all this, we can only come to one conclusion – we can live only for the sake of living. To live so that other people, thanks to us, have a meaning to live. Win a Nobel Prize, patent a cure and save millions of lives, become a surgeon and save hundreds of lives, raise kids to go for the same targets and make them strive for the same. Since we are shackled within the boundaries of our reality, the only thing left for us is to be in them further, to study them, living with them, synthesize with them together and coexist in harmony. Or at least get as closer as possible to it. And as the song keeps circling longer and longer, putting you in a dreamy trance, our planet will still ruthlessly revolve around the Sun and its axis, also ruthlessly turning us all into dust in turn.

Flying around the continents and countries, like an angel or a dove, Evran asks us questions to which we are all afraid to look for answers.

Evran – A Perfect Day

What music comes to your mind when you are sitting in total darkness? Maybe, it is white noise from TV? Sounds of the street and malls, where do you go shopping? Or it would be jazz? Or even the phrases of your parents or former partners that killed your self-esteem? What do you think about, looking into complete emptiness, just to distract yourself from those very stupid, petty and obsessive thoughts that haunt us day after day, giving us no peace?

I invite you to conduct a unique experiment: at night, turn off any light source in your room, close the windows so that there is absolute darkness, sit on the floor in the middle of your room and turn on this album. You can do this with your partner. The main rule is not to talk to each other during the experiment. And if suddenly your parents come into your room with questions about what you are doing here – say that you are meditating; you will not go very far from the truth. So, when you have done all the instructions and the first track starts playing in your ears – try not to think about anything and make thoughts come up from outside.

Do you feel how unrelated memories come to you, at the same time extremely abruptly, absurdly? An extremely strange feeling, yes, as if this album is pumping out of your soul all the dust and dirt accumulated during your existence. Do you feel like you are being cleared of this rubbish? It becomes easier for you to breathe, your posture straightens, and you gradually fall down… Nothing but some kind of force envelops you and then puts you on your back. Surrender to this feeling, give yourself to it, let it do its job and then disappear into the air.

‘A Perfect Day’ feels as a look from above, raised to the very paradise as the human eye, which has become God’s. Evran seems to be looking at us from a height, as if our loved people, that left us, are watching at us from the other world. He is staring back at us even from the album cover like an old family photograph of your ancestor that you’ve never seen. The picture carries an ultimatum emotion that condemns you for your sins and encourages your efforts to be better. His face is soulful and stern, but at the same time it carries a certain human goodness that radiates from even the most evil and unfriendly people.

How do you feel when you look at this photo of your grandparents? It would seem that this is an ordinary photograph, but the longer you look at it, the clearer and stronger the connection between the two of you will be. Will you hear from her static image what you want to hear, or what you do not want to listen, so as not to get feel worse mentally? Does they look at you with anger, with indifference or with pride? Or do you just need to think about what sits in you, that you came for advice to that thing, from which you do not expect anything of value for you?

Your grandma or grandpa, standing next to your father in his child age, would probably say to you now: Oh, you have become so thin lately, nothing bothers you? As a child you were so active and so cheerful, but now you are so drooping and closed in yourself. Surely something happened, and you continue to remain silent, afraid to go to someone for advice. You sigh sadly, put the frame on the table and stand near it for a while.

We’re all very wrapped up in the idea of perfection. The perfect life, job, man, woman. Many live and idolize memories from the past of perfect days, and use them to place the bar of what a perfect day is.

Each song here is the embodiment of the pace of life, with a character trampled in the mud and smashed to smithereens, or enchanted by beauty. For each image, Evran finds a unique musical approach: for a hero in love, he plays more sublimely and romantically, for a tragic hero or antagonist – mechanically, accurately, and frighteningly calculating, for a sad landscape – appropriately depressing. And at the same time, whatever happens inside the song – its shell or rather the ozone layer of the composition will always be equally volatile, airy and fragile. Whether it’s a post-apocalyptic instrumental or faster and dreamier soft rock – they all feel invariably subtle and gentle, as if trying to find at least a little good and light even in the thickest darkness.

So, the album has finished playing, the experiment is over. Take your seats. Come back to reality, turn on the lights, and open the curtains like its morning. Now, that you have walked along your life path again, inspired and gaining strength from the events and images of the past, it’s time for reflection and analysis. I know, it’s frustrating and unpleasant, but we have to sum up the moral of our story. Have you ever wondered what kind of life we`re all living? The only support we have is the ghosts of our past days. The only way to get you comfort is to wade through prickly thorns to the stars. The only happiness is the realization that you have found the strength in yourself to pull yourself together and continue to go towards your goals. Will we never have a single perfect day when we will be happy and at peace, when we will be sincerely happy without any sediment in the soul that will have to be washed away? Will we ever reach the ideals that we dream about and that will ideally come together?

¯\_()_/¯

I swear, I would like to know as much as you.

Ambient electronica meets late-night musings in Bonze’s latest track (Mercedes).

Bonze – (Mercedes)

‘Will you be a stranger when I turn 35?’ opens ‘(Mercedes)’, the latest release from Bonze. It’s a strong line that sets up all the agony and longing of young love, combined with the loneliness that usually visits us all at some point in our 20s. And just to be clear – the titular Mercedes is a girl, not a car. Though if you do want to write a love song to a car, no judgement.

Bonze is the project of British singer-songwriter-producer Jack Reardon. After years of floating around the music industry between performing, songwriting, and A&R, Bonze is the project that invites people into his world.

‘(Mercedes)’ is an atmospheric synth-led alt-pop track that captures the doubt and intensity of young love.

The lyrics capture all the late-night questions that appear when considering the overwhelming possibilities of love and long-term commitments – ‘Will you be the one I wait for the rest of my life?’ – as well as insecurities – ‘Even if you leave when we’re 45’. These are delivered in Bonze’s layered, hazy vocals, with some lovely falsetto notes, even if the effects do make it hard to understand the lyrics sometimes. The song injects some optimism as he admits ‘I know I’m better by your side’ but concedes ‘I’ll be in for a lonely night’. The titular lady is never directly mentioned, but the story is clear.

With its pulsing synths and ethereal vibes, the track shows influences of everything from Drake to 90s garage to The Chemical Brothers, yet it’s easy to let it ebb, flow and wash over you. It would also be perfect soundtrack material for some dark drama. Fans of ambience should keep an eye on Bonze.

Electronic artist Vujadejunky gives us his homeward journey-inspired track from his latest EP.

Vujadeunky – Homeward Bound Trajectory

What does a song of homecoming sound like to you? Is it folk harmonies and driving guitars, or quiet strings and bittersweet chords? Coming home can have many meanings, and Vujadejunky gives us his take on it with ‘Homeward Bound Trajectory’, keeping an uplifting tone throughout.

Vujedejunky is the project of independent music producer Christopher Stack. Making music since the age of 12, it’s only in recent years that he’s rediscovered his passion for it and began to release songs into the outside world. And he hasn’t wasted time lately either, releasing over 10 tracks since 2021. ‘Homeward Bound Trajectory’ is the title track of his latest EP, consisting of two different mixes of the 11-minute ambient piece, though I’ll only be focusing on the original mix.

‘Homeward Bound Trajectory’ is an accessible electronic instrumental piece, with a sincere sentiment at its heart, along with a hefty Europop influence.

Opening with static fuzz sounds and a few synths that have a touch of the 80s sci-fi to them, the beat soon kicks in, with mellow harmonies adding a real sweetness to it all. With its simple, childlike melodies, layers gradually build and fade yet a sense of hopefulness is maintained throughout.

The swirling layers do drop out when the track breaks down to a fuzzy synth bass and a beat, changing the mood to something more thoughtful. But when the beat rises again and a clap-along kick-snare beat is added, we’re back in an upbeat land heading for a triumphant finish. The piece ends gently with a piano reiterating some of the main themes. At 11 minutes, this might be too long for many listeners, but it’s a nice gateway track for anyone looking for a non-threatening route into electronic instrumental music.

LOW WAVE by Julian Wa is a beautiful soundtrack to late-night whispers and early morning contemplation. Listen with your best headphones to get the full experience.

Julian Wa – LOW WAVE

As a new music blogger, you frequently find yourself up early. One of the greatest joys is that moment of total serenity when it’s just you and the music in a dark, silent house. There are few more pure listening experiences away from the distractions of the day. Running a music blog is also a convenient excuse to really just listen with a little more intensity and focus.

LOW WAVE is a collection of Julian Wa’s psychedelic folk meditations. Each track has its own distinctively hazy, otherworldly soundscape. LOW WAVE was recorded in a secluded beachside town over a period of about 4 years, with trademark lo-fi DIY recording setup the key to Julian Wa’s off-kilter, serene sound.

The 10 tracks breeze by, each rarely longer than 2 minutes 30 seconds there is a conscious decision to leave behind song structure convention in favour of a more fluid, organic approach. These tracks feel more akin to beachside sketches or journal entries.

There is a lot to admire here and if you enjoy LOW WAVE take the time to explore more from his catalogue on Spotify or Bandcamp. His self-titled debut EP arrived in 2017 and continues to provide a bold introduction to his alluring mix of avant-garde, wonky pop and psychedelia folk.

Lead single Bloom is reminiscent of bands like Foreign Fields or High Highs and their dreamy soundscapes.

If you are looking for musical escapism, let Julian Wa be your tour guide. Tune in, switch off and zone out to LOW WAVE.
